Wolves should look to £38m-rated star to show rest of Premier League they mean business

Wolves have taken to life in the Premier League very well, and continue to look a threat to most teams in the top flight.

Nuno Santo’s men have made their system work after romping home in the Championship last time out, and they are looking like being ready to make a fist at being a regular Premier League outfit for years to come.

Of course with becoming a top team comes expense, and Wolves will need to make sure they keep adding to their squad over time to continually improve the squad and show the fans they do indeed mean business when it comes to competing at the top level.

And one man we here in the Tavern feel would be a superb addition is Belgian midfielder Thorgan Hazard, who has quietly gone about his business over in Germany while brother Eden takes the main spotlight.

Hazard has been superb this term, knocking in 12 goals in all competitions while also adding some seven assists, and the £38m-rated star could fit in nicely at Wolves.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Hazard has developed his career well, and the time could be right to see him move back to England and prove himself at the highest level possible.

Wolves are a good fit, where expectation would not be too high, and he would no doubt be given the freedom to play under manager Santo, who is keen to encourage his players to do what they do best and express themselves.

While he will cost a fair amount, he still has his prime years ahead of him, and for Wolves, the signing of Hazard would send a big statement to the rest of the league.

Wolves fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Man Utd fans fume at Fernandes display

A number of Manchester United supporters have been left fuming at Bruno Fernandes’ ineffective performance against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Ralf Rangnick’s side returned to Premier League action after 16 days without a game, as they looked to respond to wins for the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for top four.

It proved to be a hugely disappointing evening at St James’ Park, however, with Newcastle the better team for much of the night and deservedly taking home a point.

[freshpress-poll id=“378953″]

It was a match that saw numerous United players underperform but Fernandes was arguably the worst of the lot, giving the ball away an eye-watering 26 times (Sofascore), by far the most on the pitch.

Gary Neville was unhappy with the former Sporting CP man’s whinging towards the younger players, criticising both Portuguese superstars after a bad night at the office for Cristiano Ronaldo too (Sky Sports).

These United fans took to Twitter to lay into his woeful display.

“Anyway that was a disgrace. We lucky to get a draw. Attack has been abysmal for so long now. Can’t keep relying on Ronaldo. Bruno and Rashford are my favourites players but good lord they’ve been horrendous for so long”

“Bruno Fernandes is a disgrace, take him off”

“Bruno Fernandes has lost possession 52 times in his last two games vs relegation fodder. I’m a fan of Fernandes however he simply cannot be so careless in possession. There’s a difference between risk-taking and carelessness. 60 yard passes fall in the latter”

“These days Bruno Fernandes doesn’t read well before making a long pass he just play it anyhow. Playing silly passes over and over again”

“I tweeted it before game man Bruno has been woeful glad he’s suspended he needs to see the bench. Rashford has been abysmal also let’s hope for a reaction Thursday”

“Lol for real him and Bruno were just absolutely disgraceful. Ronaldo obviously had zero impact either but in his defence he was hardly getting the ball lol”

Everton: Fans react to Lucas Digne report

Chelsea are considering a loan move for Everton’s Lucas Digne during the January transfer window, The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports.

The reigning European champions are assessing potential cover options with Ben Chilwell potentially out for the rest of the season.

Digne has fallen out of favour at Everton after a row with manager Rafael Benitez in front of his team-mates.

He hasn’t played a minute of football for The Toffees since 1 December, though he was named amongst the substitutes for Sunday’s game against Brighton.

Everton have already signed a likely replacement for the Frenchman in the form of 22-year-old Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Why might Everton fans be opposed to a straight loan?

According to Transfermarkt, Digne is the third most valuable player in the squad, behind only Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

Everton fans, then, may prefer their club to cash in and reinvest if he’s not part going to be part of Rafael Benitez’s plans going forward.

Supporters were furious when it emerged last week the club had placed a £25m price tag on the defender – below his Transfermarkt value – and they certainly aren’t any happier with the added news that a loan is now on the agenda.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Law’s report, and here’s what the Goodison faithful had to say.

These Everton fans fume over Digne proposal

“Cant see us doing a standard loan. If we do we might as well give up…!”

“Dumbest piece of business going this. Go out of our way to sign a new left back so Chelsea can loan our original left back. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, so being Everton, it’s probably going to happen.”

The Reds maintained their two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table after their thumping 4-1 win over Brentford on Saturday. They were originally supposed to face Luton Town next on February 24 in the league, but the match had to be rescheduled to February 21 after Jurgen Klopp's side qualified for the Carabao Cup final, which they will contest against Chelsea on Sunday.

The midweek Premier League clash, though, will not be televised as the original fixture was set to take place on Saturday during the 3 pm blackout slot. As per current top-flight rules, if a match that is not picked for television coverage is rescheduled then the re-arranged clash will also not be televised, even if it is in a more agreeable time slot.

DID YOU KNOW?

Several Premier League club owners have been calling for the 3 pm 'blackout' of domestic games to be lifted. They want all 380 Premier League games to be broadcast live in the UK starting in 2029. Currently, only 200 matches get televised and during the 2025-2029 cycle, the number of televised games will be increased to between 250 to 270.

Jurgen Klopp's side are plagued with numerous injuries amid their increasingly congested fixture list, with Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones joining the list after Saturday's clash. The good news for the club, though, is that Mohamed Salah has returned to action and found the back of the net against The Bees. They will hope to continue their winning streak in the league against the Hatters and then aim to win their maiden trophy of the season in the Carabao Cup final.

Australia have been 'bullied' – Arthur

Mickey Arthur has challenged Australia to stand up to the bullying they have received so far in the final match at Old Trafford on Tuesday

Daniel Brettig08-Jul-2012Shocked by the margin of Australia’s ODI series defeat to England, the coach Mickey Arthur has challenged the tourists to stand up to the bullying they have received so far in the final match at Old Trafford on Tuesday. In a stinging assessment of the one-day side, Arthur said there had been “something missing” for Australia in the 50-over format since he took over as coach last November, and stated the team had been too submissive in allowing England to sail to a decisive 3-0 series lead – inflicting the first loss of the captain Michael Clarke’s 15 months in charge – for the cost of just 11 wickets.Arthur gave the touring team a stern post-match address following the eight-wicket hiding suffered at Chester-le-Street, and followed it up by airing his concerns in public. While he did not question his players’ work-rate or desire to succeed, he was worried about the vast gap that had emerged between training displays and what they were then capable of in the middle. Arthur was at a loss to explain why the ODI team had battled over a period in which the Test side has gathered strength.”I think our Test team is really good, it’s really settled, it’s got that hard edge. The Twenty20 team, we haven’t really had that much time together, but the one-day team there’s just that something missing,” Arthur said. “I’ve said it all through our home summer, there’s just something missing. I’m not sure what it is. Is it character, is it ambition? I’m not sure – there’s just something clearly missing. I’ve challenged the players, I’ll always be honest and I’ll say it how it is. I’m really looking for a response.”I want to see a bit of mongrel come Tuesday, I really do. I think we’ve been a bit submissive this whole series. We’ve allowed [ourselves] to be bullied, and we’re better than that. I don’t think we’ve had a presence this series. I’m talking absolute presence when batters are out there, like the presence our Test team had against India – when we walked on that field there was body language, we were strong, we were decisive, there was that presence.”But we haven’t had that presence in our one-day side. We didn’t really get that presence in our one-day side through the international summer at home as well, and that’s something we’ve been fiddling with, trying to get. We just don’t seem to have the answers at the moment.”Since losing despite having the better of the conditions in the series opener at Lord’s, Australia have laboured under the weight of their own expectations. With each match the margin of defeat has only grown, making many of the tourists’ pre-series boasts look empty in the extreme. The most pointed of these was the prediction that England’s batting was on the thin side due to the selection of five bowlers. Having highlighted Tim Bresnan’s presence at No. 7 as a possible weakness, the tourists are yet to bowl at him.

“We’re looking for the guy who’s going to take responsibility and say ‘I’m the champ’, I want to change the momentum. We seem to be a little bit submissive”Mickey Arthur

“When we won the toss in favourable conditions at Lord’s, I thought we bowled well. I’m certainly not having a go at any of the bowlers. I thought we bowled well,” Arthur said. “England just seemed to find a way though, you looked at the scoreboard and they were 0 for 60, it was bizarre. We felt as though we’d beaten the bat and were well on top, but you looked at the scoreboard and they were 0 for 60 in about the 18th over.”I guess in both disciplines we haven’t found that way, and that’s disappointing and worrying me a bit to be honest. I’m searching, I’m looking for those answers, I’m looking for that mongrel, looking for that guy who’s going to stand up and change the game. We’re looking for the guy who’s going to take responsibility and say ‘I’m the champ’, I want to change momentum in a game. We seem to be a little bit submissive – we haven’t stood up and we haven’t grasped an opportunity like England have.”We’ve spoken at length that if we can get them three down we’re towards Craig Kieswetter then we’re into Bresnan. Well, we’ve seen Kieswetter bat once at Lord’s and we haven’t seen Bresnan bat yet. And yet our batters, who are world class, seem to be getting out and put under the pump. Again, hats off to England, they’re outstanding, but they’re only doing the basics well. Cricket’s about basics – we’ve got to do the basics better, we’ve got to be nailing those basics. I want to see them nail the basics like we do in training. We don’t do it in the middle, and that’s my worry, that’s what I’m looking for.”A fourth defeat at Old Trafford would all but guarantee Australia’s loss of the world No. 1 ranking in the ODI format to the winner of the subsequent series between England and South Africa. The ceding of top spot would confirm the slide of the one-day team from the group of solid practitioners who held on to top spot through the years of decline experienced by the Test side, to the muddled team swept away by England in this series.”We’re a changing team as world No.1, and I’m not having a character assassination of our team at all,” Arthur said. “I’m looking for answers that are going to strengthen our team and lift our team again. It’s certainly not a character assassination of them. I know those guys are bursting a gut to go out and do well. For us as management it’s about finding that balance between their talent and performance, but somehow they are just not transforming that. That is what is perplexing me.”

Collingwood pleased with England's dominance

Paul Collingwood declared that he was “excited” by the manner of England’s seven-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 against Pakistan in Dubai

Andrew Miller in Dubai19-Feb-2010Paul Collingwood declared that he was “excited” by the manner of England’s seven-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 against Pakistan in Dubai, a statement which might ordinarily be regarded as an over-reaction to a fairly meaningless victory in a hastily arranged two-match series.Nevertheless, with the World Twenty20 now little more than two months away, and with Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan combining in a purposeful 112-run stand for the fourth wicket following a committed team effort in the field, the skipper has plenty of reasons to be cheerful going into Saturday’s series decider. It’s far too early to claim that England have cracked the shortest format of the game, but they outplayed the reigning world champions in their own home from home. And there has to be some sort of significance to be taken from that.”It was an exciting victory because of the way we played,” said Collingwood. “The bowlers set the tone at the top of the innings with early wickets, and we didn’t let them back into the game. The fielding was exceptional, we looked really sharp and saved plenty of runs, but the bowlers were brilliant because they bowled to their plans and put [Pakistan] under pressure. We had a little bit of a blip, but magnificent innings from KP and Morgs saw us home.”If Morgan’s batting was a continuation of the cool and collected form that he has displayed since his breakthrough performances at the Champions Trophy in September, then Pietersen’s unbeaten 43 from 43 balls was quite possibly the most important innings he has produced all winter. From an uncomfortable 18 for 3, he turned down the temptation to belt his way back to the form that has eluded him since the tour of the Caribbean 12 months ago, and settled into a holding pattern that guided England to an ultimately comfortable victory.”It was an important innings, because he used his head,” said Collingwood. “We were in a sticky situation – three-down early doors – and really it was kind of an anchor role, unlike a KP innings, but a very important one. It’s great that he can use his head in that way and see the boys home. He looked very composed out there which is a great thing because he looked confident at the crease and struck the ball well. He played within his limitations, because the main thing for him was to see the boys home.”The Pietersen of old might have been tempted to hog the limelight – especially once the back of the run-chase had been broken – and seek the glory shot to seal the victory and the headlines. This time, however, he was quite content to be lapped by the imperious Morgan, whose range of strokes in the closing overs were exceptional, even against the renowned master of Twenty20 bowling, Umar Gul.”I like batting with Kev, because of the ability and the power the guy has,” said Morgan. “His destruction capabilities are endless, so I think we suit each other. One of us can sit in if the other is in form or fancies a particular bowler, so I enjoy batting with him.”It was a difficult wicket to get in on, but once we got in, we were able to force the occasion and put the pressure back on the Pakistani bowlers. And we were able to do that because of the short total we were set. It was a magnificent effort from the bowlers.”Shoaib Malik, Pakistan’s captain, agreed with that point, after Pakistan had been restricted to 25 for 2 in their Powerplay overs – their slowest start in 20-over cricket. “I think we were 20-25 runs short because England bowled really well, especially with new ball,” he said. “We didn’t start well and in the Twenty20 format, you have to utilise the first six overs.”Nevertheless, if England are tempted to get carried away by their success, then they should be warned that a familiar foe will return to the fray for Saturday’s rematch. Shahid Afridi has now served his two-match ban following his ball-biting antics at the Waca earlier this month, and his peerless power-hitting and aggressive legspin will add an extra dimension to Pakistan’s tactics.”[After] one match you can’t change everything. You should give chances to your player, some proper chances,” said Shoaib. “But Afridi is back tomorrow and that gives us confidence. He’s one of the best allrounders in the world and, automatically, him being at the ground gives us confidence. I’m sure he will play tomorrow and do well for the country, his team and for himself.”

Rashford and Foden re-energise England: Winners, losers and ratings as Three Lions roar into World Cup last 16

Gareth Southgate gave the fans what they wanted by making changes to his starting line-up that inspired a rousing 3-0 win over Wales

Marcus Rashford is smiling again. And so are England.

After being tamed by the United States last time out, the Three Lions tore Wales to shreds in the second half of an ultimately facile 3-0 victory at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday night.

The fans had demanded changes after the dismal draw with U.S. on match day two and they got them, with Gareth Southgate bringing Phil Foden and Rashford into a misfiring forward line.

After the pair had switched flanks for the restart, oth players made a massive impact, with Rashford striking either side of a Foden tap-in to move level with Enner Valencia, Kylian Mbappe and Cody Gakpo at the top of the tournament's goalscorers' charts on three goals.

Southgate said afterwards that Rashford is "a different player to the one we had at Euro 2020" and it's impossible to disagree.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the winners and losers from a Rashford-inspired victory that sees a re-energised England progress to the knockout stage of Qatar 2022 as winners of Group B, meaning they will face Senegal in the last 16.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Marcus Rashford:

One of the most endearing tales of redemption at this World Cup. Rashford has been through a lot over the past 18 months, including the recent loss of one of his close friends. And yet here he is, back in the England squad and a Golden Boot contender at Qatar 2022. Indeed, with most of the media attention fixed on Foden, the resurgent Rashford's claims on a starting spot were largely overlooked, even after he had come off the bench to produce a fine finish in the 6-2 rout of Iran. Now, though, it would be a huge surprise if the Manchester United forward isn't in the side to face Senegal. Rashford was England's one constant threat against Wales, with his pace causing all sorts of problems. Indeed, he'd already forced Danny Ward into one good save before he broke the deadlock with a fine free-kick early in the second half and then embarrassed the Wales goalkeeper again for his second. The little smile he shared with Southgate after his 76th-minute withdrawal said it all: Rashford has been revitalised. "Moments like this," he told the BBC afterwards, "it's what I play football for."

Phil Foden fans:

Let's face it, there would have been uproar among England fans had Phil Foden not started here. They were already understandably enraged that the Manchester City star had been left on the bench for the duration of the bore draw with the USA. There were even suggestions that the England boss had some sort of personal issue with the Manchester City star. That was rubbish, of course. As Jack Grealish pointed out, there's always a clamour around the squad for someone to start. Southgate handled the situation well and was rewarded with a fine performance from Foden against Wales, with the 'Stockport Iniesta' causing chaos with his quick feet. Indeed, Foden didn't just score, he also won the free-kick from which Rashford made it 1-0 with one of his trademark surges towards the penalty area. Of course, the 22-year-old's supporters will argue that he should have been in the starting line-up all along. But, for now, all is calm, at least until the next selection row kicks off ahead of the Senegal game…

England's options out wide:

Seriously, another starting line-up storm is already on its way. It's inevitable given the amount of quality players they have competing for two-to-three attacking roles. There will be pressure on Southgate to stick with this side against Senegal but it's worth remembering that Bukayo Saka was brilliant against Iran, Raheem Sterling is England's big-game player and Mason Mount… well, what manager doesn't want the Chelsea man on the field when both industry and innovation are required against a strong side? Southgate, then, faces more big calls on Sunday. Is it a problem that the manager doesn't yet know his best side? Perhaps. But let's look on the bright side here: at least he has a plethora of possible solutions. It's arguable that no other side in the competition has as many exciting options out wide.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Harry Kane:

If there was one big negative on the night for England, it was the performance of their one world-class centre-forward. Granted, Kane grabbed an assist – his third of the tournament – after good work by Rashford, with the Spurs striker squaring the ball for Foden to score at the back post. However, if England are to win this tournament, they need Kane firing on all cylinders – and he's just not. Kane's hold up-play is good, his awareness of the runners around him is still there, but he still doesn't look like scoring. He left the field here having had zero shots and just one touch in the penalty area. Kane was replaced just over 10 minutes into the second half, which is just as well because he looks in dire need of a rest right now. Southgate will now be praying that Kane comes alive in the knockout stage, just as he did at Euro 2020.

Senegal:

Having sealed their place in the last 16 with a dramatic win over Ecuador, Senegal's players would have enjoyed watching England's performance in the first half of this game. The Three Lions looked toothless. Again. However, Rashford's free-kick changed everything. After the deflating draw with the U.S., England would have been slated had they been held by a horribly limited Wales. Instead, the boo boys are back on their side again after a scintillating second-half showing that means they will go into Sunday's showdown with Senegal supremely confident of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Gareth Bale:

Was this the end of Gareth Bale's career? If so, it was a desperately sad way for him to bow out, with the winger visibly irked by the attention of a cameraman at full-time. His frustration was, of course, understandable. The man who did so much to get Wales to Qatar was forced to watch on helplessly from the bench as his nation's hopes of qualifying for the last 16 were extinguished within six minutes of his injury-enforced withdrawal. Bale said afterwards that he will play as long as he can and as long as he's wanted. His compatriots will certainly be hoping he continues and we know that the love of playing for his country has been the only thing motivating Bale over the past year or so. However, it would not be at all surprising to see the 33-year-old walk away for two reasons: firstly, his long-standing injury issues; and secondly, the hard truth that it could be some time before this Championship-level Wales side qualify for another major international tournament.

Getty ImagesEngland Ratings: Defence

Jordan Pickford (6/10):

A virtual spectator for most of this mismatch. Only called into action once.

Kyle Walker (6/10):

Decent night's work. Got just over 56 minutes under his belt on his return from injury.

John Stones (7/10):

His looping header from a corner was one of England's better efforts in the first half. The odd poor pass aside, he was his usual dependable self.

Harry Maguire (7/10):

Surged forward just after the half-hour mark and tried his luck with a shot that went out for a throw. However, defensively, he was once again impressive, showing off good anticipation and timing.

Luke Shaw (5/10):

Wasn't given much to work to do but he offered nothing going forward. His starting spot could be under threat, with Trippier an option on the left-hand side.

Jordan Henderson (6/10):

As expected, brought plenty of purpose and passion after being recalled in place of Mason Mount, winning plenty of duels. But may not have done enough to hold onto his starting spot.

Declan Rice (7/10):

His usual dependable self, protecting the back four well while at the same time keeping the ball moving.

Jude Bellingham (7/10):

Always dangerous when he got a chance to run at players and get into the box. Looked the man most likely to make something happen before Rashford took centre stage.
