Martin Crowe suffers cancer relapse

Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has suffered a relapse of lymphoma, a type of cancer he was diagnosed with in October 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Sep-2014Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has suffered a relapse of lymphoma, a type of cancer he was diagnosed with in October 2012.”After a brilliant year of self discovery and recovery, I have more work to do. My friend and tough taskmaster Lymphoma is back to teach me,” Crowe said on Twitter. “To say you can’t beat lymphoma is not quite true, many have. Yet follicular lymphoma is incurable, and can be treated and tamed for many long years.”Crowe told Fairfax media he visited the doctor after suffering back pains and tests revealed the cancer had returned. “I was hopeful that after the first episode I might be clear for a few years; I felt very well,” he said. “I feel much wiser and better equipped to deal with the situation than I was last time. I’ll get stuck into the treatment again with the same resolve and positivity.”

Crowe had been diagnosed with grade two follicular lymphoma two years ago and at the time he said the rigours of a touring lifestyle during a 13-year New Zealand career had taken a toll on his health. He said his immune system had weakened after suffering illnesses on certain trips, like when he picked up salmonella poisoning in Sri Lanka in 1984.One of New Zealand’s most celebrated batsmen, Crowe, 50, played 77 Tests between 1982 and 1995, before he was forced to quit international cricket due to a bad knee.

KRL on top of table after draw

A round-up of the President’s Trophy matches on November 3, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2013Khan Research Laboratories were propelled to the top of the table with 12 points after securing a draw against State Bank of Pakistan. KRL put SBP in, with the decision seemingly vindicated after Yasir Arafat bowled opener Raheel Majeed for just 1. A 53-run stand for the second wicket between Kashif Siddiq and Umair Khan saved early blushes, before an imperious 202 from Usman Arshad wrested the match in SBP’s favour. SBP finished their innings on 420, with Sadaf Hussain and Umaid Asif taking three wickets a piece.KRL’s effort proved even between, led by Ali Khan’s 187 at No. 6, with a pair of seventies from Shoaib Ahmed and Nayyer Abbas book-ending the innings. KRL finished on 481 despite Mohammad Naved taking 5 for 129. Facing a deficit of 61 runs, SBP did well to get past the mark with just a wicket lost. Majeed scored 50 while Umair Khan just missed out on an eight first-class ton when he was out for 97. SBP were 199 for 5 when stumps was called and the match was declared a draw.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 93 runs in Islamabad to register their first win of the tournament. ZTBL batted first, but found themselves in a jam when they were placed at 42 for 3. Haris Sohail and Haseeb-ur-Rehman steadied the innings with a 75-run stand. However, once both batsmen departed, the rest of the order failed to put up a fight as ZTBL were dismissed for 210. Imran Ali led the bowlers with 5 for 31 while Hussain Talat chipped in with 3 for 24. SNGPL’s innings was marked with the inability of their batsmen to push past double figures, with only Naeemuddin and Azhar Ali the exceptions. ZTBL needed just three bowlers to dismiss SNGPL for 80, giving them a lead of 130 runs. Usman Khan took four wickets, while Imran Khan and Mohammad Khalil chipping in with three a piece.ZTBL posted a strong second innings when Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam put on 166 runs for the second wicket, with Azam having to retire hurt on 80. Sohail remained unbeaten on 50 as ZTBL declared on 236 for 2. SNGPL were given a target of 367 to chase, with things started abjectly when SNGPL were 35 for 3. Things got even worse when they were placed at 103 for 7, but a stunning counter-attacking 106 from Bilawal Bhatti scored 106 at No. 9, but despie that performance, SNGPL still ended up falling short by 93 runs.A nerveless unbeaten 49 by Naeem Anjum in the second innings saw out a tricky 178-run chase for Pakistan Television as they held on to a four-wicket victory over Port Qasim Authority in Lahore. PQA batted first, with the openers putting on 64 for the first wicket. Innings from Faraz Ali (69) and Mohammad Waqas (88), pushed them to 316. Mohammad Ali’s took best figures of 5 for 75. Despite losing their openers with the score on just 11, and then suffering further set backs to be reduced to 51 for 4, Pakistan Television looked under the cosh, but Zeeshan Mushtaq (105) and Yasim Murtaza (70) rallied the team, helping them secure a slim 43-run lead. Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan chipped in with three wickets a piece.PQA’s second innings didn’t go to plan as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite a stirring effort from Shahzaib Hasan, with 105 off 110 balls which included seven fours and four sixes, none of the other batsmen, aside from Sami’s 30, were able to contribute significant scores as PQA were rolled for 220. Waqar Ahmed and Wasim Murtaza did chief damage, taking three wickets each. With 178 runs for victory, Pakistan Television lost opener Haroon Ahmed with the score on just 17. Imran Ali and Nawar Ahmed also went out in quicktime, before a double-strike of consecutive balls from Mohammad Sami left them at a precarius 102, with 76 still required. A calm 59-run partnership between Fahad-ul-Haq and Naeem Anjum ensured they got to the mark, with Anjum finishing off the chase with consecutive boundaries.United Bank Limited beat Water and Power Development Authority by 176 runs to post their first win of the tournament. UBL batted first, with Abid Ali leading the way with his 76. Each of the UBL batsmen chipped in, but failed to go on to post a meaningful total. A couple of forties from Asif Raza and Tariq Haroon were the only notable performances other than Abid Ali as UBL reached 319. WAPDA started promisingly with some good stands up front, but lost their way after reaching 218 for 6, losing the remaining four wickets for the addition of just 42 runs. Aamer Sajjad, the captain, top-scored with 84 while Mohammad Ayub chipped in with 50. Both Mohammad Irshad and Tariq Haroon picked up four wickets each to lead the UBL bowlers’ efforts.UBL’s second innings was anchored by Abid again as he bettered his 76 in the first innings with an unbeaten 101. Khaqan Arsal scored 70 at No. 5, as UBL declared their innings at 242 for 6 with a lead of 302. WAPDA were never really in the chase, as they succumbed to 68 for 7. Only their captain, Sajjad, fought valiantly with his 64 as WAPDA were bundled out for 125, giving UBL a 176-run victory. Some imposing first-innings totals resulted in the match between Pakistan International Airlines and Habib Bank Limited finishing as a stalemate. Both sides were seeking their first win after losing their respective tournament openers. It was PIA who batted first, where innings from Fahad Iqbal (52), Anop Santosh (51) and Anwar Ali (61) helped PIA to 343. Sarmad Anwar and Ehsan Adil took seven wickets between them.Habib Bank’s innings started well, with opener Shan Masood and captain Imran Farhat adding 114 for the second wicket. Masood and No. 6 Rameez Aziz then put on 169 runs together, with Masood finally falling for 140. After Rameez was out on 78, Mohammad Aslam and Abdul Ameer were left not out as the match petered to a draw, with Habib Bank on 411 for 8.

Pattinson out of IPL for abdominal surgery

James Pattinson is out of the IPL and may also miss the Champions Trophy to have surgery on what Cricket Australia described as “a non-cricket related medical condition in his lower abdominal region”

Daniel Brettig04-Apr-2013James Pattinson, the Australia fast bowler, is out of the IPL and may also miss the Champions Trophy that precedes the Ashes after he was compelled to have surgery on what Cricket Australia has described as “a non-cricket related medical condition in his lower abdominal region.”The departure of Pattinson to India for his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders was initially delayed until Friday as medical staff awaited the results of tests and the advice of specialists. However, on receipt of opinion that Pattinson should undergo surgery immediately, he has been ruled out of competing in the Twenty20 event, joining the national captain Michael Clarke on the sidelines.Pattinson wishes to keep the condition private, but it is not believed to be serious, nor likely to affect his cricket future beyond the time required to recover from the surgery.”James Pattinson will be having surgery tomorrow for a non-cricket related medical condition in his lower abdominal region that has been troubling him during the latter part of the recently concluded tour of India,” CA’s chief medical officer Justin Paoloni said. “James has undergone tests and consulted specialists since returning from India, and it was felt that surgery is absolutely necessary at this time.”The recovery times will [be] determined once the surgery is completed but James is expected to return to training in approximately four weeks. His preparation for The Ashes is not expected to be affected but his availability for the ICC Champions Trophy will be determined at a later stage.”

Australia have been 'bullied' – Arthur

Mickey Arthur has challenged Australia to stand up to the bullying they have received so far in the final match at Old Trafford on Tuesday

Daniel Brettig08-Jul-2012Shocked by the margin of Australia’s ODI series defeat to England, the coach Mickey Arthur has challenged the tourists to stand up to the bullying they have received so far in the final match at Old Trafford on Tuesday. In a stinging assessment of the one-day side, Arthur said there had been “something missing” for Australia in the 50-over format since he took over as coach last November, and stated the team had been too submissive in allowing England to sail to a decisive 3-0 series lead – inflicting the first loss of the captain Michael Clarke’s 15 months in charge – for the cost of just 11 wickets.Arthur gave the touring team a stern post-match address following the eight-wicket hiding suffered at Chester-le-Street, and followed it up by airing his concerns in public. While he did not question his players’ work-rate or desire to succeed, he was worried about the vast gap that had emerged between training displays and what they were then capable of in the middle. Arthur was at a loss to explain why the ODI team had battled over a period in which the Test side has gathered strength.”I think our Test team is really good, it’s really settled, it’s got that hard edge. The Twenty20 team, we haven’t really had that much time together, but the one-day team there’s just that something missing,” Arthur said. “I’ve said it all through our home summer, there’s just something missing. I’m not sure what it is. Is it character, is it ambition? I’m not sure – there’s just something clearly missing. I’ve challenged the players, I’ll always be honest and I’ll say it how it is. I’m really looking for a response.”I want to see a bit of mongrel come Tuesday, I really do. I think we’ve been a bit submissive this whole series. We’ve allowed [ourselves] to be bullied, and we’re better than that. I don’t think we’ve had a presence this series. I’m talking absolute presence when batters are out there, like the presence our Test team had against India – when we walked on that field there was body language, we were strong, we were decisive, there was that presence.”But we haven’t had that presence in our one-day side. We didn’t really get that presence in our one-day side through the international summer at home as well, and that’s something we’ve been fiddling with, trying to get. We just don’t seem to have the answers at the moment.”Since losing despite having the better of the conditions in the series opener at Lord’s, Australia have laboured under the weight of their own expectations. With each match the margin of defeat has only grown, making many of the tourists’ pre-series boasts look empty in the extreme. The most pointed of these was the prediction that England’s batting was on the thin side due to the selection of five bowlers. Having highlighted Tim Bresnan’s presence at No. 7 as a possible weakness, the tourists are yet to bowl at him.

“We’re looking for the guy who’s going to take responsibility and say ‘I’m the champ’, I want to change the momentum. We seem to be a little bit submissive”Mickey Arthur

“When we won the toss in favourable conditions at Lord’s, I thought we bowled well. I’m certainly not having a go at any of the bowlers. I thought we bowled well,” Arthur said. “England just seemed to find a way though, you looked at the scoreboard and they were 0 for 60, it was bizarre. We felt as though we’d beaten the bat and were well on top, but you looked at the scoreboard and they were 0 for 60 in about the 18th over.”I guess in both disciplines we haven’t found that way, and that’s disappointing and worrying me a bit to be honest. I’m searching, I’m looking for those answers, I’m looking for that mongrel, looking for that guy who’s going to stand up and change the game. We’re looking for the guy who’s going to take responsibility and say ‘I’m the champ’, I want to change momentum in a game. We seem to be a little bit submissive – we haven’t stood up and we haven’t grasped an opportunity like England have.”We’ve spoken at length that if we can get them three down we’re towards Craig Kieswetter then we’re into Bresnan. Well, we’ve seen Kieswetter bat once at Lord’s and we haven’t seen Bresnan bat yet. And yet our batters, who are world class, seem to be getting out and put under the pump. Again, hats off to England, they’re outstanding, but they’re only doing the basics well. Cricket’s about basics – we’ve got to do the basics better, we’ve got to be nailing those basics. I want to see them nail the basics like we do in training. We don’t do it in the middle, and that’s my worry, that’s what I’m looking for.”A fourth defeat at Old Trafford would all but guarantee Australia’s loss of the world No. 1 ranking in the ODI format to the winner of the subsequent series between England and South Africa. The ceding of top spot would confirm the slide of the one-day team from the group of solid practitioners who held on to top spot through the years of decline experienced by the Test side, to the muddled team swept away by England in this series.”We’re a changing team as world No.1, and I’m not having a character assassination of our team at all,” Arthur said. “I’m looking for answers that are going to strengthen our team and lift our team again. It’s certainly not a character assassination of them. I know those guys are bursting a gut to go out and do well. For us as management it’s about finding that balance between their talent and performance, but somehow they are just not transforming that. That is what is perplexing me.”

England on brink of back-to-back Test wins

England stomped all over India’s mini comeback to all but consign them to their first set of consecutive home Test defeats since 1999-2000

The Report by Sidharth Monga08-Dec-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
The ball that started the great Indian slide•BCCIFor a major part of Saturday, the Barmy Army’s band played loud and cheerfully at Eden Gardens as England all but consigned India to their first set of consecutive home Test defeats since 1999-2000.It was fitting that the “band” drowned out the despondent Indian contingent in the stands, putting in place the jingoistic advertisements put together by the host broadcasters, which ridiculed English people. The England supporters, though, were silenced a little in the morning session by a mini comeback from India. It was ruthlessly stomped over by Graeme Swann, so far a great support act to Monty Panesar in the series. Just when it seemed India might be slipping away from them for the first time in the Test, Swann assumed the lead role just after lunch.India had taken England’s last four wickets cheaply, then gone to lunch without damage but Swann came back to burst through Virender Sehwag’s gate. Cats among pigeons cause less panic. Under relentless pressure, India batted and ran like headless chickens, and went from 86 for 0 to 239 for 9.When England went into lunch having lost four wickets in 4.3 overs and then conceded 86 runs in 21 wicketless overs, there might have been thoughts of Chennai 2008-09 at the back of their heads. Swann had himself dropped Sehwag on 7 and seen him race to 49 by the break. India were only 121 behind. Out comes Swann and tosses one outside off, putting all his might in trying to turn the ball, creating a gap between Sehwag’s pad and his open face, and then hitting the top of off.India were now like a house of cards in a bicycle stand. Gautam Gambhir, who was assured in Sehwag’s company, and Cheteshwar Pujara looked like they would get out any ball. Steven Finn, bowling reverse swing at high pace, and Swann were relentless. The pitch that had looked docile thus far began exploding all of a sudden. It was merely the amount of action put into the ball. After just 12 runs in close to eight overs in that partnership, Gambhir called Pujara through for a risky single and Ian Bell hit the stumps direct from short midwicket. You could imagine England bowlers fighting to get a bowl now; there were easy wickets on offer.Gambhir was nearly gone when a replay to check the validity of a low catch off Swann revealed he hadn’t edged it at all. In the next over, Gambhir went driving at a wide and full ball from Finn, edging him through to Matt Prior. Just to prolong his agony, the umpires asked him to wait at the edge of the boundary as they checked for a foot fault that wasn’t.With Gambhir finally gone, focus turned to Sachin Tendulkar, playing surely his last Test innings at Eden Gardens. He had got four with a trademark lap sweep but, two balls later, stayed back to an offbreak pitched on a length. The ball from Swann didn’t turn as much as he expected it to, and took the outside edge to Jonathan Trott at slip: 107 for 4.Before India could draw breath, Finn was replaced by an even more threatening James Anderson. Reverse swing at high pace again. Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh somehow added 15 before Anderson bowled one short of a length, and it shot low to take the bottom edge and crash into Yuvraj’s stumps. MS Dhoni came in. MS Dhoni got one short outside off. MS Dhoni followed it tamely. MS Dhoni went back: 122 for 6.Kohli was next, beautifully set up by Finn. Immediately after reversing one ball in to Kohli’s bat handle, Finn inverted the shine of the ball and got it to move away. Kohli didn’t have the discipline, followed it, and was taken at the wicket. He followed it with a symbolic wicket of Zaheer Khan with a reversing inswinger. Here was a former master of reverse swing who has become an innocuous trundler being shown how to do it.A bit of comedy followed. Panesar, who had been sawn off for a golden duck in the morning, had both Ashwin and Ishant Sharma missed off his bowling. If looks could kill, England would be looking for a new wicketkeeper.R Ashwin, arguably India’s most consistent Test batsman this year, continued to show he is a better batsman than he is a spinner. In the company of the obdurate Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha, he added 80 in 29.3 overs. All it did was help find the spirited Indian crowd some voice, avoid an innings defeat, and take the match into the final day.It also brought up a statistic that sums up India’s series. His batting average for the series now crossed 50, behind only Pujara’s, but it was still lower than his own bowling average.
