Sam Heazlett, David Grant and David Moody shone on their List A debuts as Australia’s National Performance Squad (NPS) prevailed over South Africa A by 17 runs in the first game of the Quadrangular A-Team One-Day Series.Heazlett struck 101 off 87 balls to steer NPS to 8 for 243 after they were asked to bat at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville. Grant (4 for 31) and Moody (3 for 44) then ran through South Africa’s batting order to bowl them out for 226 in 48.4 overs.Heazlett had walked in at the fall of the first wicket when Caleb Jewell was dismissed for 20, after he had added 43 for the opening wicket with Hilton Cartwright. Thereafter, it was a Heazlett show all along. Right-arm pacer Andile Phehlukwayo’s double-strike in the 16th over reduced NPS to 3 for 57, before Heazlett partially steadied the innings through a 49-run fourth-wicket stand with Matthew Short. Heazlett’s second significant stand of the match came with Arjun Nair, with whom he added 91 for the sixth wicket. Heazlett was run out with 33 balls remaining, but captain Sean Abbott’s cameo ensured a decent finish to the NPS innings.South Africa A’s bowlers shared the wickets equally. Phehlukwayo and Aaron Phangiso took two wickets each, while Dane Paterson, Sisanda Magala and Qaasim Adams took a wicket apiece.Adams came good with the bat too, but waged a lone battle. Captain Heino Kuhn had ground it out for 47 balls for his 28, but when he fell, South Africa A were on the mat at 5 for 71. That would soon become 7 for 88. Adams and Magala combined for a 99-run stand for the eighth wicket to give their side a brief passage of cheer, until both batsmen were dismissed in the space of 10 deliveries. Adams had made 78 off 83, with seven fours and three sixes, while Magala’s 59-ball 35 was laced with three fours. Thereafter, brief contributions from Phangiso and Paterson, South Africa A’s Nos. 10 and 11, took them closer, but not close enough. The second match of the series will take place on Sunday when Australia A take on India A at the same venue.

Rangers Could Find Morelos Heir In "Clinical" £5m Machine

It looks set to be a summer of change for Glasgow Rangers, with the Old Firm giants recently confirming that a host of first-team stars are set to leave the club at the end of the season, following the expiry of their contracts.

That impending mass exodus will see the veteran duo of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor depart – as well as injury-prone defender, Filip Helander – while the talented forward pairing of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are also set for pastures new.

In the case of the latter man, the Colombian marksman will bring to an end what has largely been a stellar six-year spell in Glasgow, with the 26-year-old having scored 124 goals and provided 58 assists in 269 games across all fronts to date.

Signed for a measly fee of just £1m from HJK Helsinki back in 2017, the polarising striker has since gone on to become the Light Blues' leading scorer in European competition, proving himself a truly prolific presence in front of goal.

While there have been notable lows for the centre-forward this season – having been branded a "pub amateur" by journalist Graham Spiers for his woes earlier in the campaign – the £33k-per-week man still has a respectable haul of 11 Scottish Premiership goals to his name thus far, having only recently bagged a brace in the 5-2 thrashing of St Mirren.

The 11-cap gem's exit will then leave manager Michael Beale in need of a fresh face to lead the line next season, with the Englishman potentially set to find a dream heir for Morelos in the form of reported target, Nikola Krstovic.

Who is Nikola Krstovic?

The 23-year-old is a Montenegro international who has been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent times, with Football Insider reporting back in February that the DAC Dunajska Streda man was among the Gers' list of targets to replace Morelos through the middle – albeit with the player's reported £5m price tag something of a sticking point.

A further report from the same publication in March revealed that the seven-cap hotshot has been 'watched' by the Glasgow side on 'several occasions' over the last 18 months, although the piece also revealed that Krstovic has extended his deal with the Slovakian outfit until 2027.

Montenegro's Nikola Krstovic celebrates

Even so, that recent extension should not put off Beale and co in their pursuit of the in-form asset, with the 6 foot 1 ace having warranted the interest amid his "clinical" form in recent years, as hailed by journalist, Josh Bunting.

The former Red Star Belgrade ended the most recent campaign with 26 goals to his name in just 35 games across all competitions, proving just why he can replicate Morelos' heroics for the Light Blues moving forward.

Also like the departing Rangers man – who was hailed as "very difficult" to handle by ex-Borussia Dortmund boss, Marco Rose – Krstovic is also something of a handful in attack, having been described as "aggressive" by Bunting.

The latter man also went as far as to suggest that the Montenegrin goal machine has "all the attributes you want in a striker", hence further representing just why he could be a dream replacement for Morelos in Beale's forward line.

Vaas to spearhead SLC's fast bowling feeder system

Chaminda Vaas has been appointed Sri Lanka Cricket’s fast-bowling consultant, fifteen months after his contract as the national team’s bowling coach lapsed

Chaminda Vaas has been appointed Sri Lanka Cricket’s fast-bowling consultant, fifteen months after his contract as the national team’s bowling coach lapsed. The focus of his new role will be on identifying and developing fast-bowling talent from around the country, rather than on working specifically with the national team.Sri Lanka’s cricket consultant Aravinda de Silva had been the primary force behind the appointment, and said it was important for the board to tap into skills of its former players.”I’ve been trying to get a few former cricketers to agree to work with us,” he said. “When I spoke with Vaas, he was very keen. We feel he will be really good working with some of our young cricketers, from the grassroots levels. He’ll work with fast bowlers from around the country, identify talent, get them in to work with the under-19, development and A team squads, which feed into the national team.”Though SLC is yet to announce concrete plans for a provincial first-class tournament, de Silva outlined a vision to use SLC’s coaches more liberally in the districts further afield from Colombo’s cricket hub. Both Vaas and new fielding coach Nic Pothas will be expected to travel widely in their roles, spotting talent and buttressing coaching work.”We want our coaches to go deep into the district and provincial levels, and also to help the clubs,” de Silva said. “If any coach in a club needs some assistance, we’re happy to allocate some of the bowling coaches to go and spend some time with those relevant clubs. We want to put some schedules together so they can go right around the country – Vaas’ job will be one of those. He will be a floating coach who will go around and do the identification.”Vaas, who was with the national team for just over a year, is the latest in a slew of high-profile coaching appointments from the present administration. This board had already installed Graham Ford as head coach, Simon Willis as high performance manager and Pothas as fielding coach.Pothas began his tenure on August 8, and said existing relationships with Ford, Willis and trainer Michael Main would ease his transition. “I’ve known Graham Ford for a very long time, and I’ve had the pleasure over the years of actually playing under Graham Ford,” he said. “I’ve known Simon Willis from the UK, and Michael Main was the strength and conditioning coach when I worked at Hampshire, so there are a lot of friends and a lot of familiar faces.”[I’m hoping to] change the fielding culture here, and bring about a change in the language we use around fielding. It’s the part of the game where we spend most of our time. You can get a good delivery or a bad decision as a batsman, but you can still influence the game with your fielding. I’ve always seen fielding as the way that you show your teammates how much you care about them.”

West Ham Come Forward To Sign £25m Attacker

West Ham United have made themselves known to hold an interest in bringing Villarreal striker Boulaye Dia to the Premier League, according to reports.

Are West Ham signing Boulaye Dia?

The Senegal international is owned by Villarreal having joined back in 2021 but spent last season out on loan at Salernitana, who do have the option to buy him available, and it’s fair to say that he made quite the impression during his time at the Arechi Stadium.

During his 33 appearances, the 26-year-old established himself as both Paulo Sousa’s overall and offensive top-performing player with a WhoScored match rating of 6.88, and this impressive form has seemingly grabbed the attention of David Moyes.

Back in May, Italian outlet Calciomercato reported that the Irons had shown an admiration in the centre-forward and were in pole position to secure his services, with the plan being that Salernitana would permanently purchase him to immediately sell him on for a profit where his expected price tag has now been revealed.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham, alongside top-flight rivals Everton and Serie A side Fiorentina, have all "come forward" to sign Dia ahead of the 2023/24 term. The Irons do indeed hold an "interest" in the striker, but Salernitana will "try to resist" offers for their prized asset and are likely to demand "at least" €30m (£25m) to sanction his sale.

The Nike-sponsored star has recently undergone surgery on a knee injury, though it's stated that he'll only be on the sidelines for four weeks and therefore will be fully fit in time for the start of pre-season.

Senegal striker Boulaye Dia.

Should West Ham splash the cash on Dia?

In January, Michail Antonio reportedly told one of his close friends that he could have left West Ham in the closing stages of the transfer window, so there’s always a chance that he may depart over the summer, and should that be the case, Dia could be the perfect replacement, so it’s definitely worth the board testing the waters with an offer.

The Africa Cup winner was a force to be reckoned with at Salernitana, racking up a remarkable 22 goal contributions (16 goals and six assists) in 33 appearances where his outstanding form was rewarded by receiving four man-of-the-match trophies.

The Oyonnax native, who is a “handful to deal with” according to journalist Josh Bunting, is also always looking to produce moments of quality even if he’s not on the scoresheet having recorded 64 shot-creating actions last term which was the second-highest total throughout the whole of his squad, as per FBRef, so should the opportunity present itself, this really is a no-brainer of a deal to complete.

Old dog Stevens bares his teeth on new contract

Kent beneficiary Darren Stevens hit an unbeaten century in what could transpire to be his final game for the county as the hosts posted 389 for 7 on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Essex. After a first day wash-out and an uncontested toss, the 40-year-old all-rounder – whose contract expires at the end of the match – hit a typically belligerent unbeaten 107 to give his side the edge in this contest between the top two sides in the second tier.Sam Northeast and Joe Denly also posted half-centuries as the hosts racked up four batting bonus points, leaving them to secure one more point from this final-round game in order to clinch second place, and with it the ECB’s prize money of almost £57,000.Stevens, who went into this final round game in the midst of protracted talks over a new contract, said: “There was a bit of anger, frustration and disappointment in that knock today, but I’m delighted we’ve almost got to 400 as a team, that we’ve virtually secured second place and we’re now in a good position to go on and win the game.”I love this place and I don’t want to go anywhere else, so my hope is that we can sort something out because I feel I’ve still got two years left in me. I still have passion for the club and for these lads and I want to be successful, so we’ll have to see what happens.”I always love scoring runs and get more satisfaction from scoring runs being that Kent signed me as a batsman. I’ve obviously turned myself into a bit of an all-rounder in the meantime, but my main job is to get runs and the past couple of months have been pretty enjoyable in that regard.”This summer for our batters has been exceptional and we’re all pretty much close to 1,000 runs now. I got a bit edgy against the second new ball because it was sliding on and dong a little bit more in the air. But I backed myself to play my shots and got over the line to my hundred in the last over.”Batting first on a pitch that spent much of Tuesday morning under wraps, Kent lost their first wicket after an hour’s play but only three overs after umpires Russ Evans and Graham Lloyd had changed the misshapen original ball.Having hit seven fours in an attractive 32, Daniel Bell-Drummond threw all but the kitchen sink into a wide cover drive against Will Rhodes, only to edge to slip where Varun Chopra took a sharp, overhead catch.Fellow opener Sean Dickson (16) soon followed when he nicked a defensive push at a Matt Dixon leg-cutter to be caught behind by a tumbling Adam Wheater to make it 50 for 2.Home skipper Northeast posted 109 for the third wicket with Denly within 25.1 overs either side of lunch. Denly posted his fourth championship half-century from 98 balls with eight fours, while Northeast reached his third 50 from 70 deliveries and with seven boundaries.Moments later Northeast’s late decision to shoulder arms to Rhodes saw him deflect the ball onto his own stumps via the face of the bat and depart for 56.Sam Billings marched in to spank a cover drive for four and pull a short one from Ravi Bopara to the ropes at square leg. But, with his score on 16, Billings’ cameo ended when he missed another attempted pull against Bopara to be sent packing lbw by umpire Russ Evans. With Kent’s first batting bonus point on the board, Denly’s stay for an excellent 74 ended when he nicked a back-foot force against Dixon to the keeper, then on-loan Nottinghamshire all-rounder Will Gidman fenced at Dixon’s next delivery to give Wheater a third catch and Dixon, the pick of the Essex attack, a third scalp.Stevens and James Tredwell combined to hoist a third batting bonus point courtesy of a sensible seventh-wicket stand. Essex took the second new ball in a bid to break the partnership, but Stevens lofted the third delivery with the new cherry from Dixon for six over mid-wicket to bring up his sixth 50 for 2016 from 83 balls and with seven fours.Dixon enjoyed a fourth success and ended the stand for 108 by snaring Tredwell for 39. The ball after having Tredwell dropped behind, Dixon snapped one back off the seam to trap the left-hander lbw. With Essex flagging, Stevens unfurled his big drives and cuts to reach an 83-ball 50 off Dixon with a six over mid-wicket, then mark his 125 ball century – the 31st of his first-class career – with a flat-bat six over backward point off Paul Walter. The veteran hit 13 fours and three sixes.

Insane Manager Wants The Celtic Job

An update has emerged on Celtic and their search for a new head coach ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest on Andoni Iraola to Celtic?

According to the Daily Mail, former Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola is preparing to throw his hat in the ring in the hope of being in contention for the job.

The club are in the market for a new boss after Ange Postecoglou left Parkhead to put pen to paper on a deal with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Iraola is currently a free agent after opting against a contract extension with Vallecano having kept them in LaLiga for a second straight season.

Would Andoni Iraola be a success at Celtic?

The Hoops could strike gold with the young tactician as he is an up-and-coming coach who has shown great promise in his short career so far.

Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch is another name to have been linked with the job but Iraola would be a far better option than the American boss, whose poor form at Elland Road raised red flags to those at Parkhead.

Former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch.

The 49-year-old barely avoided relegation from the Premier League in the 2021/22 campaign as he lost five of his 12 matches with the Whites and finished 17th in the table.

He then lost ten and won four of the 20 matches he managed in the division the following campaign, and that led to him being relieved of his duties by the English side with a points per game rate of just 0.9.

That spell in England came after the American lost six of his 14 Bundesliga games with RB Leipzig in Germany, which included five wins that left them underperforming in 11th in the table. They went on to finish fourth in the table, with 17 wins to ten losses, suggesting that he was holding them back.

Iraola, however, won 22 of his 46 matches in LaLiga 2, including the play-offs, to win promotion to the top flight in the 2020/21 campaign and was then able to establish Vallecano in the Spanish top division.

The 40-year-old tactician, who typically plays a 4-2-3-1 formation, finished 12th in both 2021/22 and 2022/23 and this shows that the Spaniard was able to successfully lead a club through a transitional period.

They finished outside of the play-offs in the second tier in the season before he joined, 2019/20, and was able to turn them into an established top-flight club within three years before his departure this summer.

Therefore, Iraola, whose work with Vallecano was hailed as "insane" by scout Jacek Kulig, is a manager on the up who has proven himself capable of uplifting a team above their means.

On the flip side, Marsch has failed in his last two jobs and has been a disappointment in England and Germany, which suggests that the Spaniard would be a far better option for Celtic at this moment in time.

All-round Taylor stars as West Indies square series

The batting frailties that have dogged England’s women throughout their tour of the Caribbean resurfaced with a vengeance once again in the fourth ODI at Sabina Park, as West Indies squared the five-match series at 2-2 with the decider to come at the same venue on Wednesday.Chasing 224 to win after Stafanie Taylor’s 85 from 129 balls had laid a strong total for the hosts, England appeared to be well placed on 133 for 1 in the 29th over. However, they lost their next nine wickets for 48 runs in 16 overs, five of them to run-outs, to slump to defeat by 42 runs.England’s chase could hardly have started with more intent, as Lauren Winfield and Tammy Beaumont added 95 for the first wicket in 19 overs to break the back of the run-chase.However, Beaumont was caught and bowled for 57 by Taylor to inject a hint of anxiety, and when Winfield followed nine overs later, run out for 51, England’s momentum shuddered to a halt.Nat Sciver departed six balls later to become Taylor’s second victim, and before the over was out, England had lost their third wicket for four runs in the space of 10 balls. After a brief rally through Heather Knight and Georgia Elwiss, the second wave of England’s collapse was even more dramatic – four wickets for four runs in 19 balls – with Taylor’s second caught-and-bowled accounting for Knight for 36 and ending England’s meagre hopes.Hayley Matthews chipped in with two wickets to account for Amy Jones and Jenny Gunn, and fittingly it was left to Taylor to wrap up an astounding allround performance with her second run-out of the innings to remove Laura Marsh for 13.Earlier Taylor’s innings of 85 had featured six fours and two sixes, and included a second-wicket stand of 69 with Shaquana Quintyne, who made 41.
