Leeds Preparing Offer For "Quality" 23 y/o Maverick

Leeds United are among the English outfits interested in pursuing a deal for Anderlecht winger Francis Amuzu this summer, and Daniel Farke could look to issue a formal offer over the coming days.

Is Francis Amuzu joining Leeds?

According to Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad's Pieter-Jan Calcoen, Amuzu is "high on the wish list" of Leeds, with Premier League new-boys Luton Town and Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice also vying for his signature.

Calcoen does confirm that there has not been a concrete offer as yet, but that at least one of the interested parties is preparing an offer to prise him away from the Purple & Whites.

Farke's Championship outfit have lost a myriad of first-team stars after suffering relegation from the English top flight this year and could now look to intensify their attention on the £4m-rated Belgium U21 international with just one week until the start of the season.

Who is Francis Amuzu?

Farke has addressed Leeds' requirement for a new goalkeeper by completing a deal for Newcastle United's Karl Darlow, having previously bolstered the defence with the £7m acquisition of Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea.

Signing Amuzu would be a prudent move for the Whites, who are a little light in the attacking ranks after losing Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigo, and given his dynamism and fluidity across both wings, would be a worthwhile addition.

Not only would he bring creativity in abundance, having completed 12 assists from 50 outings last term, but he would enhance the side's passing flow and aptitude in driving up the pitch, with FBref ranking the Ghana-born ace among the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Men's Next Eight divisions for pass completion and the top 21% for progressive carries per 90.

He could thrive with Jack Harrison on the Elland Road flanks, with the 26-year-old Englishman also capable both on the left and right wing and scoring five goals and providing seven assists in the Premier League last season despite his side's relegation, having been called "outstanding" by former boss Javi Gracia.

While the 22/23 campaign was not Harrison's greatest by any stretch of the imagination, he still averaged 1.1 shots and 1.5 key passes per game, working industriously and also making 1.1 tackles per game.

Leeds United's Jack Harrison

His work rate is illustrated by FBref, with the former Manchester City prospect also ranking among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues for blocks and the top 14% for clearances per 90.

Amuzu's passing proficiency has already been displayed by the statistics-led site, but given that he also ranks among the top 17% for interceptions per 90, it's clear that he has the mentality that will serve him in good stead to succeed in west Yorkshire.

What this signifies is a hard-working pairing on the wings this season, and while Farke will know that he holds a crop of players with more quality than most in the second tier, it is the application and diligence that will be imperative in crafting a cohesive and unified squad to rise back to prominence.

Amuzu certainly has "quality" – as commended by former boss Vincent Kompany – but with the assiduous nature to go with it, he would surely be a risk worth taking to aid Leeds and indeed Harrison in their seasonal endeavours.

England routed as South Africa surge to series-levelling win

The excellence of South Africa’s pace attack turned the Trent Bridge Test into a rout as England were dismissed in only 44.2 overs

The Report by David Hopps17-Jul-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe excellence of South Africa’s pace attack turned the Trent Bridge Test into a rout as England were dismissed in only 44.2 overs, their hopeless pursuit of a world-record 474 to win on a deteriorating pitch transformed with indecent haste into a 340-run defeat.Faf du Plessis missed South Africa’s defeat at Lord’s to be at the birth of his first child but he has supervised a staggering turnaround at Trent Bridge, where England had not lost since 2007, which told not just of South Africa’s skill but invited increasing questions about England’s ability to perform when the going gets tough.England’s coach Trevor Bayliss, appointed primarily because of his reputation in the limited-overs cricket, has now overseen a sequence of seven defeats in England’s last 10 Tests. A 4-0 trouncing in India was embarrassing enough, but this feckless batting display will probably attract the loudest condemnation of all. “We’ve had a shocker,” he said.Data suggests no surface degenerates more reliably than Trent Bridge in Tests in England – and that is normally no bad thing – and South Africa made voracious use of their opportunity, removing England’s top four by lunch and then rushing through the rest of the scorecard in unconstrained fashion. This is an England batting line-up that at its best can be highly entertaining, but which gives the impression it can only swim with the tide. Joe Root, two matches into his Test captaincy, must gather together resolve if his first series in charge is not to end in defeat.South Africa’s new-ball attack, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel, were at the peak of their game and this time they gained excellent support from Chris Morris with only Duanne Olivier, an unimpressive stand-in for Kagiso Rabada, failing to pose a perpetual threat.Philander repeatedly battered away on an excellent line and length as if determined to wear his own hole in the pitch, Morkel possessed uncomfortable bounce and Morris mixed up bouncers and yorkers with alacrity as England struggled to muster resistance. Morkel went wicketless, scant reward for his consistent menace only a few months after he feared his career might be over because of back trouble.England had a single to their name overnight. It felt utterly worthless; their defeat looked only a matter of time. Perhaps they could have planted it and hoped it germinated, or framed it and put it on the wall. Wickets would not be long delayed. By the time the lunch clock brought temporary release, they had careered to 79 for 4. Only 16.2 overs later it was all over.Alastair Cook put up most England resistance, scrambling 42 from 76 balls before he became the fourth England batsman dismissed, hurried by Morris’ excellent bouncer and punching it away from his face down the leg-side where Quinton de Kock held the catch.Cook’s Trent Bridge record almost defies belief. In 10 Tests at Nottingham, he averages 21.93, less than half his Test average and has managed a solitary half-century – 50, nothing more, nothing less – against Australia in 2013.Jonny Bairstow holed out to mid-on as England collapsed•Getty Images

It was asking a lot for him to remedy that on this sort of surface. The sound track of the morning was the rapping of pads and the yelping of South Africa fielders as thick edges dropped wide of slips and flew past gully.Keaton Jennings got off the mark by hooking a bouncer from Morkel, a show of resolve perhaps, although his shot could have fallen anywhere. He has been in mediocre first-class form all summer which did not inspire confidence. He fell in the second over of the morning, Philander wasting no time in creating a gap between bat and pad to bowl him.Gary Ballance never got out of his ditch. His only scoring shot careered unhealthily through gully, off Philander. Pushing forward to Philander, he was beaten by low bounce, extremely late on the shot. He also required attention from the physio when Morkel struck him on the bottom hand and, as the match ended, was heading for an x-ray on his left index finger.South Africa’s successful review, to win the lbw decision was a model of grown-up conversation. They had lost a review in the previous over – Cook narrowly surviving because of Morkel’s high bounce – and du Plessis demanded responsible information as he might if lives were at stake.Philander, who delivers from so close to the stumps that his chances of lbw are heightened, was adamant, the captain conceded and the wicket was theirs.Root, the captain, played inside a swinging yorker from Morris. Another excellent delivery from a South Africa attack hunting England down with admirable skill. If England’s top three includes two players whose Test match aptitude must now be in question, their middle-order, so destructive at times, seems unable – or unwilling – to adjust to the more controlled tempo of Test cricket’s more demanding days, traipsing through the most hazardous streets as if it was a suitable place for a picnic.Jonny Bairstow’s self-admonishment was clear as he tried to hit Keshav Maharaj’s left-arm spin down the ground and only succeeded in dragging it to deep mid-on. Moeen Ali, who gives the impression that he has two gears – marked enjoyment and boredom – reached 27 with his usual sang-froid and then top-edged a sweep at the same bowler to Heino Kuhn in front of square. At least Ben Stokes showed a willingness to buckle down against his natural instincts, not for the first time, before pushing back a wary drive at Philander. The end was rapid, as if England’s three pace bowlers, still aching from their work on the third day, had observed the efforts of the batsmen on the fourth and decided they had seen enough. England, though, had been outplayed both with bat and ball and the lack of ready-made replacements for Anderson and Broad must be a huge concern.Stuart Broad indulged in a slog-sweep and was lucky only to get a groan from his home crowd, and, lo and behold, Olivier wrapped things up with two in two. Mark Wood spliced to gully, James Anderson poked to the keeper. At the on-field press conference, du Plessis looked like a man you would not mess with and Root looked as if he needed to become that man overnight. The series swung markedly from England to South Africa and conceivably in the last two Tests it could swing back again. But it is South Africa who look ingrained in the ways of Test cricket.

Aston Villa: Emery "exploring" exciting move for "ferocious" star

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has a 'real interest' in free agent Spain international Adama Traore as he looks to expand his options in the final third, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Is Adama Traore a free agent?

Traore left Wolverhampton Wanderers upon the expiration of his contract at the end of last campaign alongside veteran pair Diego Costa and Joao Moutinho to seek a new challenge, as per BBC Sport.

Valued at €10 million (£8.6 million) by Transfermarkt's market value estimate, the eight-time Spain cap has yet to find a new home despite the new Premier League campaign drawing close to getting underway.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are believed to be 'plotting' a move to sign Traore as a free agent to inject some further pace and power on the right flank.

The report states that Traore has been placed on a shortlist of potential offensive targets for Aston Villa and he also has a contract offer 'on the table' from Wolves; however, the proposal is less financially rewarding than the deal that was put forward to him two years ago at Molineux.

Last term, Traore, who has been hailed as "ferocious", made 40 appearances in all competitions for Wolves, registering three goals and two assists in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

As per Gianluca Di Marzio via The Daily Mail, AC Milan have also been in contact with Traore's agent, Jorge Mendes, to see if a deal to bring the 27-year-old to the San Siro is a possibility this summer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Galetti has confirmed that Aston Villa are keen on Traore and signified that they are 'exploring' the chance to bring him to Villa Park.

Galetti stated: "Aston Villa are following some players and are waiting for the right opportunity to make some moves. They have real interest in the former Wolves winger Traore, who is now a free-agent and is still looking for a new club. Villa are exploring the opportunity to sign him."

Who else could Aston Villa look to bring in this window and who could leave?

Aston Villa manager Emery has already acted to bring in Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans this window and more incomings as well as some outgoings will be expected at the club between now and the close of play in the market.

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa have asked about Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams and would be willing to activate his £25 million release clause.

Reports in Spain via TEAMtalk claim that Sevilla full-back Gonzalo Montiel has emerged as a target in the West Midlands amid rumours that he is far from happy at his current employers and would welcome an exit.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Philippe Coutinho could be set to leave Aston Villa this summer on Twitter X, stating: "Understand one club from Qatar has now asked for conditions of Philippe Coutinho deal. Coutinho could leave Aston Villa in case he receives good proposal; Saudi clubs also approached him in July."

Villans youngster Aaron Ramsey may also be on his way out and is in talks with Middlesbrough over a move that would net Emery in the region of £12 million and could include a buyback clause, as per The Express & Star.

Mushfiqur requests less pressure on Bangladesh's top order

The Bangladesh captain wants everyone to put less pressure on Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman and Soumya Sarkar, who had a tough time against Australia earlier this month

Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim addresses a press conference•AFP

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has made a request to put less pressure on Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman and Soumya Sarkar during the upcoming tour of South Africa. His request came at the end of the press conference which at times veered into the polemic when he poked, with a smile on his face, at Shakib Al Hasan. All three players had a tough time in the Australia Tests earlier this month with only Sabbir scoring a half-century. Imrul and Soumya had an ordinary time, getting out softly at times and showing deficiencies against pace and spin. There has been a lot of speculation about these two top-order batsmen while Sabbir’s role in the second innings of the second Test was also confusing to some.”Every player wants to do well,” Mushfiqur said. “There has been a lot of talk about Imrul, Sabbir and Soumya. While criticism is acceptable, please don’t do it unnecessarily as they will go further into their comfort zone. If they can’t perform, Bangladesh will lose more. It will take a lot of time to replace these players. It is hard to perform consistently so please don’t question them repeatedly. If they do badly, at least they will know that people around them are supportive.”Bangladesh have many questions in their batting line-up, including finding the right opening combination and whether Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur will bat in the top order. The question of replacing the resting Shakib is also another area of concern although they have picked the experienced Mahmudullah who will likely bat at No 4 or 5.Mushfiqur said that those replacing Shakib have a great opportunity in front of them in South Africa, although he added he only heard about his request for the break – an unprecedented move in Bangladesh cricket – only when Shakib informed the board president.”We need two players to replace Shakib. It is a bad news for a captain that the No. 1 player is missing. But those who will play in his place have a great opportunity in front of them. We played without Shakib against West Indies, Zimbabwe and New Zealand and we won, but we will still miss him. I hope he can use the break to recover fully.”I heard about it when he spoke to the board president. I prepared mentally, but you cannot replace him. Cricket is a team game. If we can play as a team, we can do well,” he said.Mushfiqur, however, didn’t respond whether he would also consider a break, only saying: “I haven’t become such a big player that I will need a break.”

South Africa v India: Boxing Day Test out, New Year likely to begin late

Cricket South Africa is understood to be mulling filling the Boxing-Day slot with a one-off Test against a different opponent

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Aug-2017

India are set to play four Tests in South Africa, as well as ODIs and T20Is•BCCI

Not only will India not feature in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa later this year, but even the New Year’s Test in Newlands is in danger of being pushed back. The Boxing Day Test is usually the highlight of South Africa’s international season while the iconic venue in Cape Town usually hosts the second Test of the South African summer from January 2.However, it is understood that India will only land in South Africa in the last week of 2017 and will want to acclimatise for at least a week before starting the tour comprising four Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals.According to a BCCI official, India cannot reach South Africa for the Boxing Day Test which starts on December 26 only because their home series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to finish on December 24. “We can’t make it make it in time. The Sri Lanka tour ends on December 24. After that we need to give the boys a few days’ rest,” the board official told ESPNcricinfo. “The South Africa tour is a big one, so they need to play two warm-up games, so it will take at least 10 days [before the first Test].The BCCI has already alerted Cricket South Africa on the scheduling difficulties, which both boards expect to sort out by next week. ESPNcricinfo understands CSA has accepted the fact that India will miss the Boxing Day Test, and, hence, have started looking for other options to stage a one-off Test. Pakistan and Afghanistan are reportedly the two possible options, but nothing concrete has emerged yet on that front.Tony Irish, the head of the South African Players Association, said that if the Newlands Test failed to start on January 2 or 3, it would be a “major blow” for CSA only because the match coincides with the holiday season. “I had been aware of the fact that they were unlikely to be there for Boxing Day, but for them not to be here for the New Year’s Day is a major blow to CSA and the fans,” Irish said. “To lose Boxing Day is a big thing, but to lose both of them would be massive hit for the fans.”Irish felt India could play a solitary two- or three-day game ahead of the first Test to facilitate things. But the BCCI official said that the Indian players could not be pushed. There are other repercussions of the India tour starting late. As soon India depart, South Africa are scheduled to host Australia for a four-Test series before the players arrived in India for the IPL. If CSA do manage to find an opponent for the Boxing Day Test, that would mean nine Tests crammed inside a two-month period.Irish felt such an “extremely gruelling” Test schedule combined with the limited-overs matches against India would exacerbate the workload on players. “If the India Test matches start much after January 2 or 3, there will be a lot of concern about the players’ workload,” Irish said. “You really compound the workload issue.” Irish has raised this concern with CSA, which has noted it.

Phil Hay: "Bright Young" Leeds Star Likely To Leave

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams is likely to sign for Chelsea this summer, according to Phil Hay.

Is Tyler Adams leaving Leeds?

The Whites, under Daniel Farke, began their Championship season on Sunday afternoon and came from behind against Cardiff City to draw 2-2 thanks to a late Crysencio Summerville equaliser at Elland Road.

One player who didn’t feature due to injury but was present at the ground was Adams, who was spotted giving instructions to 17-year-old midfielder Archie Gray on the pitch at half time.

Gray impressed on his senior Whites debut, and with Adams out with a hamstring issue, the youngster may become a regular under Farke in the coming weeks.

Adams’ Leeds future has been up in the air ever since the club were relegated from the Premier League last season, and by the looks of things, a move to Chelsea is firmly on the cards.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Reliable Leeds correspondent Hay took to X on Monday morning to share what he’s heard about Adams’ Elland Road future. He stated that it is likely the USA international ends up moving to Stamford Bridge, with the Blues set to step up their interest.

“Chelsea set to step up interest in Tyler Adams. Increasing likely that they will sign the Leeds United midfielder, who has a release clause in his deal.”

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

Who could replace Tyler Adams at Leeds?

Adams, hailed as an “exceptionally bright young footballer” by Gary Lineker at the World Cup last year, could be the latest to leave Elland Road, joining the likes of Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Max Wober, Brenden Aaronson and Robin Koch, all of which have departed on loan.

Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have also sealed permanent exits away, whereas Leeds have so far signed just goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielder Ethan Ampadu from Newcastle United and Chelsea respectively.

Should a move away materialise for Adams as Hay claims, then Farke will be left with just Gray, Ampadu, Darko Gybai, Sam Greenwood and Jamie Shackleton as young midfield options, highlighting the need for further reinforcements if the club are to push for an immediate return to the Premier League.

One player who has been linked with a move to Yorkshire is Rangers’ Glen Kamara, with the club thought to be eyeing up a move for the Finland international to replace Adams.

Kamara has been training on his own, with manager Michael Beale recently saying:

“He’s training in isolation just now, not with the group, trying to get himself up to speed. There’s a lot in the background with Glen as well, with different enquiries and him talking to different people.

“So it’s best that he's to the side of the group. I’ve got no issues with him on a personal level — it’s a conversation we had a good few months ago.”

Therefore, Kamara, who is experienced after making 193 appearances for Rangers, could be the player seen as Adams’ perfect replacement, and with time ticking until the deadline, Leeds may want to get a potential deal lined up ahead of Adams’ move to Chelsea.

Burnley Dealt Setback In Deal For Albert Sambi Lokonga

Burnley’s proposed deal to sign Arsenal central midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga is now “complicated”, and a reliable journalist has revealed the reason why.

How old is Albert Sambi Lokonga?

Lokonga is 23 years of age and has been plying his trade at the Emirates Stadium since 2021 having joined from Anderlecht, but after spending the second half of last season out on loan at Crystal Palace, he’s clearly out of favour under Mikel Arteta and has therefore attracted interest from Turf Moor.

The Clarets reportedly entered advanced talks over an initial loan swoop with an option to buy for the Belgium international last month, and whilst he had an opportunity to make the move overseas to Spain, Vincent Kompany having managed him in the past, alongside his desire to prove he’s capable of competing in the Premier League, they held the advantage.

Since then, Football Insider had claimed that the Gunners star reached a full agreement to put pen to paper following a breakthrough in negotiations, though it would appear that the move is now severely at risk of falling through after a face-to-face discussion didn’t go as well as both parties would have hoped.

Are Burnley signing Albert Sambi Lokonga?

Taking to X, Sacha Tavolieri revealed that Burnley and Lokonga didn’t see eye-to-eye over the finer details of his switch, and therefore, chiefs have temporarily stopped pursuing him and could miss out on his signature with the player also being monitored by AS Monaco. He wrote:

“While discussions on loan deal with mandatory option were fluid with #ArsenalFC… Been told Sambi Lokonga’s side meeting with #BurnleyFC about personal terms didn’t meet expectations and that it’s now more complicated than expected. Also the reason why it’s been so quiet since the 2nd of August.

"#ASMonaco (who was on the player even before his transfer to #AFC) still got an interest for the Belgian midfielder & took information recently but nothing concrete so far. To be continued towards the end of the window.”

Crystal Palace's former loan midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

How much does Albert Sambi Lokonga earn?

At Arsenal, Lokonga currently pockets £50k-per-week, which he isn’t really earning considering his lack of game time, but that could all change should he sign on the dotted line at Burnley.

He’s been dubbed a “tireless” runner and "aggressive tackler" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and last season ranked in the 97th percentile for pass completion and won ten out of his 13 tackles made at Crystal Palace, so is super calm and composed in possession and loves to get stuck in.

The youngster is also capable of getting involved in the final third having posted 12 goal contributions (eight assists and four goals) since the start of his career.

Furthermore, Lokonga is a versatile operator having previously been deployed in four different positions, including in defensive, attacking and on the right side of a midfield alongside usual role in the centre circle.

We think he’d be a great option for the boss to have in the building should any unexpected injuries ever occur and they shoud be nailing down those last few details to get this one done.
