Fantastic four-wicket returns from Tom Taylor and Nathan Smith gave Worcestershire a fighting chance in a rain-affected second day of their Vitality County Championship clash with Durham.The pair had the ball on a string at the Seat Unique Riverside and picked up key wickets, but 40 from Colin Ackermann helped Durham build their lead to 226 after finishing day two on 148 for nine.With plenty of rain around, there was no play at Chester-le-Street until just after one o’clock and the visitors took two wickets in a seven-over spell before being forced off by the weather once again.Wickets continued to fall in the evening session, but Ackermann adapted to the conditions and helped his side build a challenging lead.Smith, who is yet to be capped at international level for New Zealand, has been a fantastic addition to the Pears’ team, with the overseas star adding to the two second innings wickets he took late on in a chaotic day one, finishing with figures of four for 52.Meanwhile, Taylor picked up four for 46 including the vital wicket of England captain Ben Stokes with the last ball of the day.Durham resumed on 33 for three after the start was delayed by more than two hours due to rain.Nightwatchmen Matthew Potts and Peter Siddle resumed on nought and two respectively after the late spurt of wickets on day one.Potts, who has received a recall to the England Test squad for the West Indies series, looked to be positive and kept the scoreboard ticking over.The first wicket of the day fell in the fourth over of the day when Taylor bowled Siddle for three with a brilliant piece of bowling. Aston Villa have now burst into the race for a “special” player who is expected to cost over £60m, according to a report.

Villa locked in transfer battles with Newcastle

With Villa and Newcastle both set to compete in Europe next season, it is no surprise the two clubs are shopping in similar talent pools, and they are battling it out for the signature of FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who is protected by a £85m release clause.

The Villans’ pursuit of a new striker comes amid doubts over Ollie Watkins’ future, with Sky Sports recently revealing that Manchester United are now exploring the conditions of a potential deal for the England international.

However, striker is not the only position in which Unai Emery is looking to strengthen, with the manager also setting his sights on a new winger, according to a report from talkSPORT.

The report states that Aston Villa have now burst into the race for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, with the Sweden international also being targeted by Newcastle, and widespread recent reports have suggested the Magpies are in advanced talks.

Villa are now set to compete for Elanga’s signature, however, having conducted checks on the Forest star, but a deal is likely to be on the expensive side, with their Premier League rivals set to hold out for a fee in excess of £60m.

Forest have no desire to sell one of their key players, having already knocked back a £45m bid from Newcastle, which means Emery’s side will need to be willing to spend big to get a deal over the line.

The former Manchester United man has gone from strength-to-strength since leaving Old Trafford, playing a key role in Forest securing survival in the 2023-24 campaign, before going on to feature in every Premier League game last season.

Given Rodri’s injury, the Spaniard was seen as a replacement for his compatriot, but things haven’t quite worked out. Indeed, he only played 61 minutes for City at the Club World Cup.

Now, according to Manchester City News, Guardiola could be ready to sell the midfielder just months after bringing him to the Premier League.

His representatives have made contact with several clubs across Europe and in Saudi Arabia to gauge potential interest as per the report.

With both Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri capable of playing in Gonzalez’s position, and with the Dutchman capable of offering more going forwards, it appears as though Gonzalez is surplus to requirements.

City will certainly be looking to recoup the majority, if not all, of the £50m they paid to sign the former Porto star just six months ago.

Why Nico Gonzalez could be sold by Manchester City

Since joining City from Leeds United in the summer of 2022, Phillips has featured just 31 times for the club, scoring a solitary goal. He was part of the squad which won the treble during his maiden season, but he failed to make it onto the pitch in both the Champions League final and the FA Cup final.

At the time of writing, Gonzalez has played just 17 times for the Etihad side during his stint thus far, but it looks as though he – unlike Phillips – won’t even reach the 20-game mark the way things are going. Like Phillips, Gonzalez wasn’t quite trusted in a final, spending the entire FA Cup final on the bench.

The Englishman failed to score a single goal during his first season at the club, and while Gonzalez netted just once in the Premier League, he could spend even less time in Guardiola’s ranks. It is clear that the pair were perhaps the right players at simply the wrong time, no doubt about that.

Upon arriving at the club in January, it looked as though Guardiola had signed a player who might well turn into an ideal heir for Rodri. Indeed, he was even hailed as the “mini-Rodri” by the City boss earlier this year.

Lauded as “superb” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig following the 2023/24 campaign, Gonzalez looked like a coup for City.

Indeed, during the first half of the 2024/25 season, the midfielder scored seven goals and grabbed six assists for Porto across 29 matches.

At City, however, he failed to kick on from these impressive figures. The 23-year-old made just 17 appearances for the club, with 11 of these being in the starting XI.

In the Premier League last season, he failed to create a big chance, averaged just 0.1 key passes per game and succeeded with only 25% of his attempted dribbles.

This was a far cry from the attacking traits he demonstrated at Porto. Even defensively, Gonzalez won less than 50% of his total duels per game, while also being dribbled past 0.5 times each match for City.

Now it looks as though he won’t be given a chance by the club as the 2025/26 campaign zooms into focus, with his £50m capture looking to be an even bigger mistake than that of Phillips’ £42m acquisition.

Rodri and Reijnders are both ahead of him in the pecking order and with Guardiola eyeing another signing or two, don’t be surprised to see Gonzalez on the move before the end of the transfer window.

Strengthening his midfield appears to be high on the list, and that can be shown with their latest transfer targets. According to talkSPORT, Everton have returned to Wilfred Ndidi as a potential target this summer. The midfielder could cost Everton as little as £9 million, due to a release clause that has now been activated due to Leicester City suffering relegation.

As well as looking at Ndidi, the Toffees have reportedly registered their interest in signing James McAtee from Manchester City. The attacking midfielder is expected to leave the Etihad due to his lack of game time last season, and he could be available for around £25 million.

There is now a new name on their midfield list, and that is Raphael Onyedika from Club Brugge. Everton are said to be in pole position to sign him, with Club Brugge looking to get £25 million for his services.

Everton confident in their bid to sign Thierno Barry

But as much as Moyes wants a new midfielder, that may have to wait, as the Toffees focus on securing their top striker target. According to TBR Football, Everton are now ready to accelerate talks to sign Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

The Toffees’ interest in Barry emerged at the very start of the summer transfer window, but they have had to be patient when it comes to a transfer, as the forward has been away with France at the U21 Championships, only knocked out by Germany on Wednesday.

Despite interest from other teams across Europe, The Friedkin Group are confident they can sign Barry this summer. The forward’s representatives have already held talks with the Premier League side, and he is now open to the move. The fact that Barry has a £34 million release clause makes the deal easier to do, but the Toffees may even end up paying slightly more than that if they do the deal in installments.

Tottenham Hotspur salvaged their season in the most glorious fashion last month, beating Manchester United in the Europa League final to end 17 agonising years of searching for silverware.

However, it wasn’t enough to save Ange Postecoglou, who Daniel Levy dismissed at the start of the month following a wretched Premier League season that concluded with Spurs completing a miserable 17th-place finish.

But with Thomas Frank brought in to replace the Aussie, there’s hope yet that Tottenham can use the past year as a springboard for future success, having already targeted Bryan Mbeumo, who is expected to leave Brentford this summer and has expressed a preference to go to Old Trafford, although Spurs’ new manager could tempt him to change direction.

It’s the kind of signing that simply wouldn’t have been possible had Tottenham failed to clinch the Europa League. But now, the door is very much open for what would be a marquee move.

Why Spurs want Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo has truly established himself as one of the most threatening forwards in the Premier League, vital for Frank’s side’s success over the past several years.

His shooting marks the most salient part of his skill set, for sure, but Spurs would also be getting their hands on a dynamic and layered player who, as per Sofascore, created 17 big chances in the league, and averaged 1.3 tackles and 4.7 successful duels per game.

Brennan Johnson holds down the fort on the Tottenham right wing, but for all the Welshman’s potency in the final third, he’s shown to drift in and out of games, his influence waning all too often.

As such, a player like Mbeumo would prove a marked improvement, someone refined and talismanic who could serve as a leader and an example to follow.

However, while Tottenham will be buoyed by Mbeumo’s supposed change of stance in considering their offer now that Frank is at the helm, it would be foolish to put all their eggs in one basket after he previously made it clear that he wants to move to Old Trafford.

As per Caught Offside, Tottenham have been scouting Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert, with the report stating that the Londoners are currently weighing up an official offer.

Curiously, Man United are also interested in signing the Netherlands international, clearly following a similar train of thought as Spurs. Arsenal and Liverpool are also in the mix.

Bournemouth don’t want to sell their dynamic attacker but would, of course, for the right price, with that tag seemingly set at around €55m (£47m), although it remains to be seen whether or not Spurs would be willing to meet their demands.
