Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has said he has 14 fit men available for selection for the four-day tour match against the England Lions, starting on Thursday. Marlon Samuels flew in from India, where he was playing in the IPL, on Tuesday and Assad Fudadin, who was delayed due to visa issues, joined the squad on Wednesday morning. According to a West Indies spokesperson, Narsingh Deonarine, the only missing member from the 15-man Test squad, was due to arrive on Thursday, but would not be available for selection in the Lions match.Sammy welcomed the new arrivals and said it would bolster the confidence of the team ahead of the Lord’s Test, starting on May 17. Sammy was happy to have virtually a full squad to pick from. “I’m quite pleased to see Marlon and Fudadin this morning. It is very good for us,” he said. “We welcome them and it’s good for them they are here to practise with us today. The whole family is united and now we are preparing ourselves for the first Test match.”It is understood the visa delay in the case of the Guyanese pair of Deonarine and Fudadin was inevitable. The West Indies selectors had waited for the home series against Australia to finish before announcing the Test squad for the England tour at the end of April. Once named, Deonarine and Fudadin then had to apply to the UK embassy for visas because nationals from Guyana and Jamaica do not get a free entry, unlike the other Caribbean countries. A further delay may have been caused by the UK Border Agency tightening its visa screening process. But Sammy did not want to gripe about something not in his control, saying the team would move forward. “We were aware once we were leaving the Caribbean that Narsingh and Fudadin were trying to sort it out,” he said, “and Marlon was with Pune Warriors in the IPL. You just move on with things and handle distractions.”Sammy said all his players, including Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Fidel Edwards, who had been reported as fitness doubts, were available for selection. “We will come up with the best eleven in these conditions to prepare ourselves for the Test match,” Sammy said, adding with a smile that team manager, Richie Richardson, would not be needed to handle 12th man duties. The visitors have not had much too much else to smile about in the last week, due to the cold and rainy weather prevalent across England. In their first tour match, against Sussex at Hove, only 34 overs were possible across three days. The forecast for the Lions match is not encouraging either.Sammy said it was frustrating, having been forced to stay indoors last week and now resorting to indoor nets in Northampton. But Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, has been keeping the players busy by asking them to go through video footages and involving them in various team and one-on-one meetings. Such exercises, Sammy said, allowed the players to bond together. “It is disappointing because our main goal here is to play cricket, get out in the middle. But we have no control over the weather,” he said. “We are just moving along.”Edited by Alan Gardner

Ashwell Prince hit an unbeaten 134 on a day of missed chances and milestones in Canterbury as Lancashire reached a respectable 269 for 8 in their end-of-season Championship clash with Kent. The former South Africa opening batsman posted the 35th century of his illustrious career to cement an otherwise faltering first innings by the newly-crowned Division Two champions. He barely put a foot wrong against a makeshift Kent attack shorn of Calum Haggett, Mitch Claydon and Charlie Shreck. The hosts gave a surprise first-class debut to 19-year-old rookie pace bowler Matt Hunn, who was thrown in at the deep end to take the new ball after signing on the eve of the match. A right-arm, Colchester-born seamer with a handful of appearances for Kent and Essex second teams and Suffolk, he replaced Shreck who is Kent’s leading Championship wicket-taker with 33 scalps. Both Kent and Hunn made a sound start once the fog cleared allowing play to start at 10.45am and, having won the toss, Kent made their first breakthrough with the second ball of the match.Mark Davies found a perfect length to draw Paul Horton forward and have him caught low and left-handed at second slip by Darren Stevens. Hunn sent down three maidens but was seen off by Prince who notched his 15,000th run in first-class cricket early in his stay.Davies gave way to Adam Ball at the Nackington Road End and Ball struck with his ninth delivery by bowling Luis Reece will a full length delivery. However, Kent slip fielder Stevens grassed two tough chances just before lunch, missing Karl Brown on 4 against Ball and then 17 off the bowling of James Tredwell via a deflection off the wicketkeeper’s knee.Prince and Brown added 71 in 27.1 overs either side of lunch until Stevens had Brown, pushing in defence at an away-swinger, caught behind by Kent’s tumbling understudy wicketkeeper Sam Billings.Prince reached his eighth fifty of the season from 129 balls and with seven fours and, on reaching 73, posted his 1,000 runs for the Championship summer.Kent botched a third chance when Luke Procter edged a drive against Stevens to be dropped at second slip by Sam Northeast. Procter failed to capitalise however, and soon perished for 8 to a diving catch at slip by Stevens after the left-hander had toe-ended an attempted sweep against Tredwell.Andrea Agathangelou followed just before tea when he shouldered arms to Ball then, soon after the resumption Stevens took another athletic slip catch to account for Tom Smith and give Tredwell his 350th first-class wicket. After almost five hours at the crease Prince reached his second hundred of the summer from 215 balls and with 14 fours. It was his sixth ton for Lancashire. The second new ball accounted for Alex Davies, caught at slip when pushing defensively at one from namesake Mark Davies, then Hunn bagged his maiden Championship wicket by having Oliver Newby caught driving on the up at extra cover. Kent fluffed a fifth chance late in the day when Billings parried a diving chance off the edge of Stephen Parry’s bat to deny Hunn a second scalp.

Borthwick keeps Tremlett at bay

If anyone in the England camp takes a look at the scorecard from this game, it will be noted that Chris Tremlett, who missed out on selection for the fifth Test at The Oval

If anyone in the England camp takes a look at the scorecard from this game, it will be noted that Chris Tremlett, who missed out on selection for the fifth Test at The Oval, was the only name to feature in the Surrey wickets column. A five-for kept his team in touch against Durham and will provide further grist for those questioning England’s decision-making.That the home side were not too inconvenienced by Tremlett was largely down to the efforts of Scott Borthwick, a local lad who made his third first-class century of the season. England may well be interested in that, too.Durham is a proudly local county cricket club. Every time an outsider visits Chester-le-Street the sense of community and the bond between supporters and players is tangible. The man who leads them in their cricket, Geoff Cook, Durham’s first captain in first-class cricket and now their coach, is a Middlesbrough native. Cook is recovering from a heart attack but the spirit he brought to the club after a career with Northamptonshire and England pervades the place. His captain, Paul Collingwood, born in Shotley Bridge, has been playing for them long enough now to be termed a stalwart, and nobody in Durham will hear a word said against him.Borthwick and Will Smith, another who warrants acceptance as an adopted son, provided the runs that gave Durham cause for satisfaction at the end of a day which started with Surrey winning the toss and putting the opposition in. Whether Collingwood would have made the same decision as Gareth Batty had the coin landed the other way up is debatable, as his side entered the fixture with a depleted seam attack.Borthwick, who has been capped three times in limited-overs cricket, is a Sunderland boy and Smith, while born in Bedfordshire, was educated at Durham University. Between them they contributed 222 runs to Durham’s effort. Borthwick came to the wicket in the second over of the match after Tremlett had castled Mark Stoneman. Five hours later he had a hundred and until he was dismissed for 135 he never looked remotely vulnerable. He was tidy, compact, and seized on the loose ball to register 21 boundaries.Smith joined Borthwick after a tumbling slip catch by Zander de Bruyn saw off a promising innings by Keaton Jennings, who added 69 with Borthwick. Then the pair dug in and built a partnership of 183 in a little over 50 overs. Smith fell 13 runs short of a century and Borthwick followed him just before the close of play.Borthwick’s innings leaps off the scorecard but look further down it and you find the other outstanding contribution. Tremlett might not have been expecting to play in this game, but he was released by England and made his way up the A1. His presence in the side might well have influenced Batty’s decision to bowl first but, while the outcome at the end of the day might have disappointed, his faith in his bowler was justified.Tremlett took all five wickets to fall, bowling off 17 precisely calibrated steps before leaping into a colossal delivery stride. His accuracy rarely wavered, as evidenced by an economy rate of 2.31 and the modes of dismissal: one bowled, two lbw, and two caught behind the wicket. It was a joy to watch and he will be a potent asset for England in Australia in the winter – though some will wonder if he could have been as effective in south London this week.

Former India batsman Ashok Malhotra was appointed coach of Bengal on Monday, after WV Raman returned to Tamil Nadu to take over as coach.Malhotra is a level III coach, with experience of coaching India A. “Bengal cricket has been struggling for some time. There’s a lot of work to do. I truly believe we have the potential to make it count,” he said. “The real work will begin after we pick the side in September.”As a commentator for last nine years, I’ve been shutting between Delhi and Kolkata. But now, it’s like coming back home. I am so excited to return to Bengal. I personally feel I can give something back to Bengal cricket. I’ve given an opportunity and am looking forward to give my best.”Malhotra expected batsman Manoj Tiwary to come good for Bengal. “Manoj will be out for early part of the season. But once he is back he will deliver. My main worry is the spin department. We have a good bunch of pace bowlers but the spin attack is very weak. So my primary focus will be to build a good spin department.Malhotra said two important aspects of a coach’s job were man-management and ensuring that players who were experiencing a slump were given confidence. “If the dressing room is happy everything will fall into place. The advantage is in the dressing room the coach will speak in Bengali. From my personal experience, I have seen if you interact in mother tongue, then the players open up easily. That’s very important. We have to move as one unit.”Malhotra, a former selector, played seven Tests and 20 ODIs for India, and 156 first-class matches for Bengal and Haryana, scoring 9784 runs at 50.95. He also once held the record for the most runs in Ranji Trophy cricket.

Graham Napier took four wickets in four balls on his way 7 for 32, the second best-ever List A bowling figures for any Essex player, as his side beat Surrey by 178 runs in their YB40 match. Essex recorded their second win in the competition in 24 hours after the visitors were dismissed for just 134 in pursuit of their opponents’ commanding 312 for 7.Needing to launch their reply with tempo and substance, the Surrey innings floundered with the loss of their first four wickets in 13 overs for 49 runs, with Napier claiming Jason Roy and Ricky Ponting. The former Australia captain had been beaten outside his off stump by Napier but there was no such good fortune for the batsman when he pushed forward to the bowler’s next delivery and lost his middle stump, leaving Napier jubilantly celebrating his prized scalp. The 33-year-old Essex allrounder continued his demolition job by bowling Azhar Mahmood and Jon Lewis and trapping Zander de Bruyn and Tom Jewell in the crease with full-pitched deliveries. That left the Surrey innings in tatters at 113 for 8. Napier then found the edge to have Stuart Meaker caught in his next over and complete his collection.Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara had led the scoring for the home side, with Shah playing a superb innings of 68 from 53 balls including three sixes and four other boundaries. Bopara scored 54 from 58 balls, with five boundaries including a six.Shah and Bopara posted 55 in nine overs for the fourth wicket to initiate the rapid acceleration of the innings. England allrounder Bopara was a surprise inclusion for the home side having been given permission to play by the ECB ahead of the Champions Trophy which starts later this week and he responded with a fine and typically stylish half-century containing wristy strokeplay and trademark drives on either side of the wicket until he was caught at deep midwicket. His demise allowed Shah to take over and the former England batsman combined elegant and conventional stroke play with aggressive punishing shots as he dominated the visitors’ bowling. He set the tone for his side who added 191 runs from the final 20 overs, with Shah at the crease for 15 of those. There were briskly struck contributions at the top of the order from Tom Westley and Mark Pettini, who scored 34 and 43 respectively, before James Foster added 39 from 18 deliveries at the conclusion of the innings.

Antonio Conte’s start at Chelsea has been better than anyone

Chelsea stormed to another victory on Saturday, picking up a 3-1 win over Swansea City at Stamford Bridge. It’s a win that means the Blues have moved an incredible 11 points ahead of second place, albeit having played a game more than Manchester City. The win came courtesy of Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Diego Costa although the side did have to overcome the scare of a Fernando Llorente equaliser and a period in the game when the Swans looked well capable of winning a point. The transformation of Chelsea under Antonio Conte has been quite remarkable. From a team who couldn’t finish in the top four to a side capable of blowing away any team in the division. And as this stat from Squawka shows, he has in fact made the best start of any Premier League manager in history. He’s become the quickest manager to reach 20 wins in his debut season.

It’s incredible stuff that really underlines what a fantastic job he is doing at the club. He’s creating a platform that could usher in a whole new era of massive success at Stamford Bridge.
