England must take New Zealand seriously

There have been suggestions that all England need to do to bag a 3-0 whitewash is to turn up. While the visitors begin as clear favourites, New Zealand are far from so hopeless that England can ignore their challenge

England’s loss to New Zealand XI shows this tour is not to be taken lightly•AFP

New Zealand is a country of adrenalin-fuelled adventure sports, but the expectation is that the Test series that starts in Dunedin on Wednesday will not get pulses racing in the same way. In fact, there have been plenty of suggestions that all England need to do to bag a 3-0 whitewash is to turn up. There has just been the odd hint of disquiet from the New Zealand viewpoint that this is being treated as an Ashes warm-up. The New Zealand XI victory in the tour game in Queenstown has not gone unnoticed.New Zealand’s recent Test form is leading to the low expectations but perhaps it should not be taken as so black and white. They are not the only team to have been recently bowled out for under 50 by South Africa; the match before that they beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka to level a series (the same result England managed). They are now back on home soil, after extensive periods touring, which should make them feel more comfortable.England begin as clear favourites. That is usually the way when they tour here but history is littered with examples of the challenge having proved harder than expected. Last time, in 2008, they lost in Hamilton by 189 runs, getting humbled on the final day by Kyle Mills and Chris Martin. In 2002 they went into the final Test, in Auckland, with a 1-0 lead and despite the match being badly hit by rain lost by 78 runs. Although Michael Atherton’s team were ultimately 2-0 winners in 1997 they had to overcome the embarrassment of being defied by Danny Morrison in the first Test. This time, led by the combative Brendon McCullum, New Zealand are far from so hopeless that England can ignore the immediate challenge. Clearly, the recent problems surrounding the shockingly handled change of captaincy have destabilised the team – rumours of differences in the dressing room persist, although New Zealand aren’t alone in that – but McCullum is a single-minded leader who faces his task head on.From England’s point of view, anything less than a 2-0 scoreline (there is a chance of rain at some point, not least in Dunedin) will be a disappointment. Having put their Test game back on track in India after a difficult 2012 they now need to redevelop that ruthless edge which characterised their play during 2011.After the upheavals of last summer – Kevin Pietersen’s problems and the retirement of Andrew Strauss – the team has been stabilised. Nine of the first-choice XI for Test cricket are set in stone; the two areas for debate are the third fast-bowling slot and the long-term opening partner for Alastair Cook.Stuart Broad looks set to return to support James Anderson and Steven Finn, but doubts remain over how much long-form cricket he will be able to play as he attempts to manage his heel problem. It seems inconceivable that he will be able to go through such a full programme this year – 14 Tests, with a 15th in January 2014 – without another break. Beyond him, too, there are now a few more questions about the depth of what follows than had previously been thought.Nick Compton will retain his position alongside Cook and he deserves the opportunity to build on his hard work in India. At 29, he still has time to forge a lengthy Test career but he needs to show he can do more than purely blunt the new ball.As odd as it may sound considering the considerable averages of most of England’s top order, New Zealand should feel they have a chance to make early inroads. Compton and Pietersen are short of time in the middle and Jonathan Trott has not been quite at his best. And in the opposite corner the home side have, amid all the problems, formed a decent pace attack.Tim Southee is back to lead the line and has matured into a consistent swing bowler. His success in Sri Lanka, where he took 12 wickets in two Tests, was the mark of someone entering his peak. Doug Bracewell, fitness permitting, can produce incisive spells while Trent Boult, as long as he doesn’t drop it short, can swing the new ball. Neil Wagner also caused England problems in Queenstown. In turn, though, New Zealand’s batting will be severely tested, especially by Anderson’s swing and Finn’s pace. They will have a new-look opening pair – likely to be Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton – and it has been a while since the side have been given consistent starts. Four of the last six first-wicket stands have been single figure (albeit three of them came against Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander) and the last hundred opening partnership was 12 Tests ago in January 2012 against Zimbabwe; the last against a major nation another four Tests before that. The middle order, however, offers the hope of something better. Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, McCullum, Dean Brownlie and BJ Watling has a solid ring about it, although there is an argument that McCullum should be at No. 3 to allow Williamson to develop lower down. Watling, and to a lesser extent, Brownlie impressed for New Zealand XI in Queenstown, McCullum is in strong form and Taylor’s hundred in the Napier ODI has put him back on track. The public also need a team they are pulled into watching. Unlike with the rugby union side, there is not the expectation, or demand, that they will bring home the major prizes but neither is embarrassment accepted. New Zealand Test cricket desperately needs some good news over the next three weeks. A series win, though, would verge on miraculous.

Concorrência no ataque

Manoel e Boselli
Manoel tranquilo, bem posicionado.

É outra característica, fez vários jogos assim no Besiktas, perto do 9.

Ten Doeschate takes Chittagong to final

A late flurry of boundaries from Ryan ten Doeschate and Ariful Haque took Chittagong Kings to the BPL final for the first time

A late flurry of boundaries from Ryan ten Doeschate and Ariful Haque took Chittagong Kings to the BPL final for the first time. Their five-wicket win over Sylhet Royals now pits them against Dhaka Gladiators, whom they had beaten once before in the competition. The two allrounders came together at the end of the 15th over with Chittagong still requiring 52 runs off the last 30 balls with five wickets in hand. After taking stock of the situation in a single over, the Netherlands batsman went after the Afghanistan offspinner Mohammad Nabi, taking him for 16 runs in an over with a six and a four. In the following over, Ariful joined in the fun by going after Elton Chigumbura, with 21 coming off the 18th over to ease the equation considerably.Ariful was later bowled by Nazmul Hossain’s slower delivery in the penultimate over before ten Doeschate finished it off with a slashed boundary off Sajidul Islam in the last over. He made an unbeaten 44 off 28 balls with the help of four boundaries and a single six off Nabi.Chittagong’s top-order misery, however, put them in the spot early in the chase. Chittagong hadn’t successfully chased more than 136 in the tournament so it was a similar scene when Jason Roy, bowled by Sohag Gazi, and Ravi Bopara were dismissed in the first two overs. Bopara’s woeful BPL campaign continued as he was out first ball to the mildly threatening Chigumbura.Nurul Hasan and Naeem Islam added 56 for the third wicket before the former was brilliantly caught by Suhrawadi Shuvo at deep square-leg off Nabi.Earlier, Sylhet were struck early by Enamul Haque jnr who kept them down to 51 for 3 in the first ten overs. The left-arm spinner took two for three in his first two overs. He finished with 2 for 24 from four overs, apart from Kevon Cooper’s two wickets.Sylhet were propped up by a 48-run fifth wicket stand between the captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Chigumbura in just 23 balls before a final flurry from the Zimbabwean allrounder, taking 20 off Cooper’s last over, helped them to a competitive total.Chigumbura made an unbeaten 42 off 25 balls with three fours and three sixes – two over midwicket and one over long-on – but it was still not enough to challenge a Chittagong side that managed to jump over the line at the most crucial moment.

Australia march into final

Australia entered the Women’s World Cup final with their fifth successive win in the tournament, completing a nine-wicket demolition of Sri Lanka with 27.4 overs to spare

Australia entered the Women’s World Cup final with their fifth successive win in the tournament, completing a nine-wicket demolition of Sri Lanka with 27.4 overs to spare. Jodie Fields asked Sri Lanka to bat in the morning, and set attacking fields for her bowlers throughout. All six bowlers responded with wickets, the offspinner Erin Osborne returning remarkable figures of 10-6-9-3 after seamer Julie Hunter’s 6-3-6-1. Australia’s batting, which has been a source of concern, had little trouble getting to the target of 132, with the openers Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning drowning Sri Lanka’s remaining hopes in a flood of boundaries. An hour into their innings, Sri Lanka were in trouble at 41 for 4 and it had it not been for a face-saving stand between Deepika Rasangika and Dilani Manodara, they would have struggled to get to 100. Fields did not let them get too far beyond that mark. The Australia captain was relentless in her pursuit of wickets, crowding the inner circle with fielders through the innings. One of the few times she had the maximum permissible four fielders in the deep was when the hard-hitting Eshani Kaushalya came in. The pressure of trying to beat the infield led to the regular fall of Sri Lanka wickets. This despite Australia’s lead seamer Ellyse Perry missing her second successive game, this time with an ankle injury.Megan Schutt did not need any help from her fielders in getting the opening breakthrough. Yasoda Mendis pushed tentatively at an incoming delivery and was bowled through the gate. Chamari Atapattu tried to go hard over mid-off but chose a slower one to do that, and could not clear the field. Holly Ferling, the 17-year old quick, struck in her opening spell again, sending back Sri Lanka captain Shashikala Siriwardene who nudged one down leg to the wicketkeeper Fields. The Australian captain kept the field up after the opening Powerplay, and also left cover vacant to invite the drive against the offspin of Lisa Sthalekar. Sandamali Dolawatte went for the stroke to a flighted one, and a delighted Fields snapped up the edge. There was turn and bounce for the spinners but Surangika responded the way she had played against India. She lofted the seamers down the ground, swatted them through extra cover and also cut hard. Batting with a cap on, she even hooked the pacy Ferling to the deep square leg rope.Rasangika was put down by Sarah Coyte off her own bowling on 22, but Australia restricted the partnership to 49 as Schutt had the batsman caught on 43 at short extra cover with the fifth ball of her second spell in the 31st over. Manodara, who had edged Coyte twice past the slips for four, fell in the next over as she tried to hit Osborne over mid-on, Schutt backpedalling to take a well-judged catch.Kaushalya, who had shocked England and India with her powerful hits, did not hang around for too long. She slog-swept her fourth delivery from Osborne and Alex Blackwell took a low catch diving forward at midwicket. After some resistance from the tail, Sri Lanka were all out for 131.Australia’s opening pair rendered the game even more one-sided as they added 55 in under 10 overs. Lanning played out a maiden first up to Udeshika Prabodhani, and was on 1 off 14 before she cut loose. Drives, pulls, cuts, and a straight six appeared in no time as she raced to 37 off 36 before cutting one to slip.Haynes took over, piercing the off-side field with numerous drives as Sri Lanka’s fielding fell apart. She hit a couple over the advertising boards at long-on for six before bringing up the win with another cover drive for four. She was on 71 off just 61 by then, and Australia were in their seventh World Cup final in nine attempts.

Warne banned for one BBL match

Shane Warne might have played his last game for this Big Bash League campaign after being suspended for one match following his ugly clash with Marlon Samuels on Sunday

Shane Warne might have played his last game of this Big Bash League campaign after being suspended for one match following his ugly clash with Marlon Samuels on Sunday night. Warne, the Melbourne Stars captain, was also fined $4500 following the fracas in the derby against the Melbourne Renegades at the MCG, while Samuels is yet to face his hearing after also being charged over the incidents.Warne was charged with four breaches of Cricket Australia’s Code of Behaviour and found guilty of three; Samuels was charged with two offences. Warne’s suspension means he will miss the Stars’ last qualifying match at home to the Sydney Thunder on Tuesday and his chances of taking any further part in the tournament will hinge on whether his side, which is one of four sides locked together on four wins in the middle of the points table, reaches the finals.Warne confronted Samuels physically and verbally during the Melbourne Renegades innings at the MCG, seemingly in retaliation for an incident that had occurred earlier during the Melbourne Stars innings. During that incident, the bowler Samuels grabbed David Hussey by the shirt and prevented him taking off for a second run, a strange act given that Hussey’s path had not taken him into contact with Samuels.Later while Samuels was batting, he took off for a run and turned back, after which Warne came down the pitch and said to Samuels: “You want to grab some more people? F*** you Marlon.” Warne, who was wearing a Fox Sports microphone at the time, then grabbed Samuels’ shirt, apparently to demonstrate what he felt Samuels had done wrong earlier, and pointed at him threateningly. The clash continued in the next over when Warne collected the ball running in from the off side and under-armed it into the body of Samuels, who was in his crease not attempting a run. Samuels responded by tossing his bat down the pitch, vaguely in the direction of Warne. On Monday morning, Cricket Australia confirmed a long list of charges from the incidents. Warne was found guilty of three: showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision; engaging in inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with another player; and using obscene, offensive or generally insulting language to another player. He was found not guilty of throwing the ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner. After the hearing, Warne indicated that he would consider appealing the suspension, but later in the day he decided to accept his ban and hoped the Stars reached the finals. In a series of tweets, Warne also expressed disappointment at his own actions.”I have always been passionate when I play cricket and had the game at heart along with its image…” he tweeted. “I’m disappointed at some of my actions last night as captain & as a player, but I’m also very disappointed at the severe penalty I received!”Samuels has been charged with engaging in inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with another player; and unbecoming behaviour, namely that “players and officials must not at any time engage in behaviour unbecoming to a representative player or official that could (a) bring them or the game of cricket into disrepute or (b) be harmful to the interests of cricket”.However, Samuels ended the match with a potentially serious injury to his eye socket after he top-edged a Lasith Malinga delivery through the grille of his helmet, and any suspension may not affect his availability anyway. The Renegades coach Simon Helmot said Samuels was recovering at the team hotel and would be taking some time off to care for his injury, and a time for his hearing is yet to be confirmed by Cricket Australia.”We’re now waiting for the swelling around his eye to subside before determining the full extent of the blow,” Helmot said. “We are also assessing what, if anything, this means in terms of squad composition for the remainder of the tournament and will take action to source an international replacement if necessary.”
