Strauss and Trott secure nine-wicket victory

Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott hit unbeaten half-centuries to guide England to an emphatic nine-wicket win in the second Test at Edgbaston to give them a 2-0 lead in the series. Both batsmen finished on 53 with the second-wicket pair making light work of a potentially testing surface as the hosts completed their sixth consecutive Test victory midway through the afternoon session.England did the hard work before lunch and when they resumed 47 were needed with the bite gone from Pakistan’s attack. Strauss went to his fifty from 108 balls then Trott brought up the same milestone, his second fifty of the match, with a powerful cover drive which levelled the scores. Strauss secured victory via a rather inglorious inside edge but he’ll be highly satisfied by another successful outing,The day began with thoughts of Pakistan continuing their resurgence from the third evening, but in the end it proved a stroll for England. The visitors had left themselves far too much ground to make up after crumbling for 72 on the opening day and they couldn’t create enough opportunities to defend the low target. Two more chances did go begging off Strauss, both to the hero of the previous day Zulqarnain Haider, although the first was very difficult and the second came with less than 50 needed. It took England just 11 balls to wrap up Pakistan’s innings as Stuart Broad, lighter in the wallet after his fine for throwing the ball at Haider yesterday, had Mohammad Asif taken in the gully. However, Pakistan managed the early breakthrough they desperately wanted when Cook’s poor run continued as his stumps were demolished by Mohammad Amir. Cook’s footwork was nowhere and he is becoming a serious concern, although with Ian Bell still injured and the England selectors not keen on major structural changes he is likely to have the remainder of the series to revive his season.Amir’s eight-over opening spell was another eye-catching display from the 18-year-old and he could easily have collected a second scalp as he beat the outside edges of Strauss and Trott. Saeed Ajmal was introduced for the eighth over and nearly followed Graeme Swann’s lead by striking straight away, but Haider couldn’t gather Strauss’s thick outside edge. It was a tough chance, but the type of opportunity that needed to stick if Pakistan were to stay in the contest. The pitch was also offering uneven bounce for both the spinner and the quicks. Trott was beaten by consecutive shooters outside off stump, while Strauss received a grubber from Ajmal that just missed the timber. However, the two batsmen displayed impressive watchfulness and rotated the strike well with regular quick singles.Boundaries were hard to come by, but both Strauss and Trott timed the ball nicely when the opportunity came. Trott produced the shot of the morning when he flicked Asif through midwicket, and he continues to develop into an increasingly reassuring figure at No. 3, while Strauss produced a sweet cover drive off Ajmal shortly before the break.Much had been expected of Ajmal after his five-wicket haul in the first innings, but he wasn’t able to provide the same threat as Swann. He couldn’t quite find the right pace for the surface to extract the optimal turn and, tellingly, couldn’t send down a maiden until his tenth over. Once again England proved far too strong for inexperienced opposition and Pakistan will have to show more of their second-innings spirit to avoid a whitewash.

'It's easy for us to panic a bit' – Nielsen

The coach Tim Nielsen has conceded the Australian bowlers might have lost their nerve after their batting colleagues collapsed for 88

Panic is not a word that’s thrown around lightly within the Australian set-up. At least, not when they’re talking about themselves. But the coach Tim Nielsen has conceded the Australian bowlers might have lost their nerve after their batting colleagues collapsed for 88 under overcast skies at Headingley. When Ricky Ponting won the toss and chose to bat, the bowlers certainly weren’t expecting to have the ball in their hands just after 2pm, and they didn’t quite know how to attack the situation. Doug Bollinger and Mitchell Johnson failed to find much swing and Ben Hilfenhaus attacked the leg stump of Salman Butt too much. Before they knew it Pakistan’s openers had 35 from six overs.”You get bowled out for 88, you think we’ve got to bowl the miracle ball every ball and try to bowl these blokes out in ten overs if we’re going to have any chance,” Nielsen said. “We bowled a few to their strengths, they got away from us a little bit and all of a sudden you’re chasing your tail, the first five overs go for 30 or 40 and they’re halfway to us. It’s easy for us to panic a bit.”Nielsen is the man the Australians call on to front the media on their most difficult days, when the players are reluctant to answer questions, and he even prefaced his comments with: “You know it’s been an ordinary day if I’m sitting here.” But despite the way the Australians struggled to handle the pressure, Nielsen insisted it was not a major concern in the lead-up to an Ashes series.”It’s not a worry,” he said. “I’d prefer we’re exposed to these experiences now than the first time it happens it happens in an Ashes series that everyone is going to be focusing on. We have a couple of young blokes playing in their second Test match, we’ve got a young bowling attack … it’s exciting for them to be exposed to this sort of pressure and understand that Test match cricket is not easy.”He was especially pleased with the way Hilfenhaus fought back after tea to find the right line and pick up the key wicket of Butt. Full, swinging deliveries were just as difficult for the Pakistan top order to handle as the Australian batsmen, and Nielsen did not have harsh words for his own batting group despite Australia falling to their lowest Test total since 1984.”We had four or five lbws and there weren’t too many of those that were big slogs as such, they just got beaten by the swinging ball,” Nielsen said. “At the end of the innings we were conscious of trying to be positive and get as many runs as we could.”The memory of the Sydney Test in January, when Pakistan lost after taking a 206-run first-innings lead, has given the Australians hope that they can dig their way out of such a hole again. Their best-case scenario is to skittle Pakistan quickly on the second day – they do have a long tail and are three down already – and if Australia can manage that, anything is possible.”I know we’re 50 or 60 behind but at least we’re a chance,” Nielsen said. “If we can have a good morning tomorrow and take a couple of wickets and not let the scoreboard get out of control we’re still a chance in the game.”

Leeds want Jesse Marsch to replace Bielsa

Jesse Marsch is Leeds United’s preferred choice to replace Marcelo Bielsa if he leaves this summer, according to a report which emerged on Thursday lunchtime.

The Lowdown: Bielsa’s contract running out

Bielsa has become a modern-day legend at Elland Road, bringing a great period of success that has seen the Whites return to the Premier League in style.

The 66-year-old only signed a one-year extension last summer, however, meaning his current deal will expire at the end of the season, and there have been no concrete reports of a renewal yet.

This suggests this summer could possibly be the one he finally hangs up his bucket at Leeds, with reports this week even claiming he has already held meetings with clubs in Europe.

The Latest: Leeds eye up Marsh capture

According to The Telegraph‘s Chief Football Writer, Sam Wallace, Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta have made Marsch the ‘first choice’ candidate to replace Bielsa, with the 48-year-old currently without a club.

Marsch was previously in charge of RB Leipzig but parted ways back in December, while he impressed hugely during his time at RB Salzburg boss, winning two Austrian titles and cups apiece.

Interestingly, during his last six months in Austria, he managed heavily linked Leeds target Brenden Aaronson.

The Verdict: Ideal Bielsa repalcement

In an ideal world, Bielsa staying put would still arguably be the best-case scenario, with the Argentine struggling this season but badly hampered by injuries to key players.

That being said, Marsch could bring a freshness to the squad if the current manager feels it is time to move on, with Jurgen Klopp once saying he has ‘massive respect’ for the 48 year-old American – perhaps not a surprise given their mutual love of gegenpressing.

Marsch’s style of play could also make it a seamless transition – the former Leipzig man says he likes to play ‘fast’ and not ‘give the opponent time and space’, which feels very Bielsa-esque.

In other news, one returning Leeds player could feature against Manchester United. Find out who it is here.

O'Keefe emerges from spin shadows

Steve O’Keefe, a New South Wales slow-bowling allrounder, had a match-winning impact for an Australian side over the past week

A New South Wales slow-bowling allrounder had a match-winning impact for an Australian side over the past week. But he wasn’t Steven Smith and the star knows he was fortunate to be playing. If Jon Holland and Jason Krejza had avoided off-season surgery and Smith hadn’t been with the limited-overs squad in England, Steve O’Keefe would have been on holiday.Instead O’Keefe, a left-arm spinner, was at Allan Border Field tormenting Sri Lanka A by following his 61 on a tacky pitch with 7 for 35 and another 47. It was the sort of comprehensive contribution allrounders dream of and his came for Australia A in only his seventh first-class game.O’Keefe, 25, played down his achievements, being satisfied to succeed in both disciplines at a more senior level, and is aiming to chip in again in the second four-day match of the series in Townsville from Friday. “With everyone fit, I probably wasn’t going to be the next spinner in this, but given the opportunity I’m stoked and hope to keep contributing,” he told Cricinfo.Despite his destructive performance with the ball, O’Keefe was slightly more satisfied with his vital half-century in the opening innings. A No. 8 with aspirations of shifting up the order, he put on 105 with Ben Hilfenhaus to lift the hosts to what turned into an impressive total of 208.”It’s always good to get five-for, but I did enjoy the 60,” he said. “The partnership with Ben was pretty important, we were 7 for 100 and could have easily folded, but we fought and dug in. I was probably more happy with the 60 that got the team into a reasonable position and gave us something to bowl at.”Australia, who won the opening game by 107 runs, remain cautious of Sri Lanka and will be particularly careful with the offspinner Sachithra Senanayake, who took 11 wickets in game one, and the fast bowler Dammika Prasad. “They are a very talented group,” O’Keefe said. “There’s enough there for us to watch out and be wary of.”A Twenty20 and three one-day games follow the final first-class fixture of the series and the inclusion of Josh Hazlewood and Usman Khawaja in Australia’s squads in England has forced some changes. Luke Feldman, the Queensland fast bowler, and Michael Klinger, the new South Australia captain, have been added to the limited-overs outfit.O’Keefe will not be part of those games – Xavier Doherty has been named as the specialist spinner – and life back in New South Wales will contain more jostling for selection. He played five Sheffield Shield games last season, taking 15 wickets at 30.93, but there are seven spinners in the Blues squad, ranging from Nathan Hauritz and Smith to the rookies Luke Doran and Adam Zampa.”From my point of view I can’t really rest, knowing those guys are around,” he said. “A couple have played Test cricket, one will, there are some young guys, who knows how good they could be?”With so much fresh talent in the New South Wales squad, 25 is the new 35. “I’m one of the older ones now, it’s a bit bizarre,” he said. “I’ve gone from feeling pretty young in the squad to one of the older ones. So I don’t take an opportunity for granted, I realise I have to make every post a winner.”

Newcastle United: Sky Sports drop Lingard update

Newcastle United are now contemplating making another move for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard amid an update involving their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike.

What’s the story?

After initially seeming like the Magpies would seal the signing of the Stade Reims striker, it appears things have just hit a roadblock, and now, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed that Eddie Howe’s side could turn to Lingard if things completely break down over a move for the latter.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (footage relayed by NUFC360), Downie said: “That would then mean Newcastle will have to look elsewhere, and as we know they’ve been interested in Jesse Lingard all window long.

“It’s our understanding that the player is keen to move here, and Newcastle would love to bring him to the football club, but the financials are the big problem there. I think both Newcastle and Manchester United would have to come to some sort of compromise. I think Newcastle would look to Lingard if they get a definite no from Ekitike, and I have to say that one is on ice.”

Howe would love him

After joining West Ham on loan just last year in the January transfer window, the England international bagged an impressive nine goals and four assists in just his first ten Premier League games for the club – it was no surprise then that he was lauded as being “absolutely phenomenal” and that on the form that he was showing, he was the best player in the top-flight.

His performances at the London Stadium proved the impact the £75k-a-week earning star can make on a team when given a consistent run of game-time – something he would surely see a lot more of at Newcastle.

Given the kind of midfield struggles that Howe’s side have had this season – their top goal-scoring midfielder this campaign has been Jonjo Shelvey with just two – bringing in Lingard would be a major step in the right direction of taking some of the burden away from the likes of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin going forward.

The £18m-rated star would surely fancy his chances of reviving his career at St James’ Park, and Howe would certainly love the added goal-scoring he would bring from midfield.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are in talks over this European star…

West Indies A seal 114-run win

Bangladesh A put up a respectable performance in the second innings, but it was not enough to make up for their abject surrender the first time around, as West Indies A completed a 114-run win on the final day

Cricinfo staff20-May-2010
ScorecardBangladesh A put up a respectable performance in the second innings, but it was not enough to make up for their abject surrender the first time around, as West Indies A completed a 114-run win on the final day.Chasing the unlikely target of 430 in the fourth innings, the hosts looked down and out at 104 for 5, after which Shariar Nafees kept them afloat with a century on the penultimate day. Still, the visitors hit back with late wickets and few expected Bangladesh to survive long on the final day, 197 adrift of their target with three wickets left. As it transpired, Suhrawadi Shuvo – the only positive to come out of the match for the home side, apart from Nafees’ heroics – slammed an unbeaten 64 at better than a-run-a-ball to cap his nine-wicket match haul. The visitors, however, had enough slack to work with and trained their efforts on the other end. Lionel Baker got rid of Nazmul Hossain and Syed Rasel cheaply to take his side to the brink of victory, before Shuvo cut loose. Number 11 Noor Hossain hung around with Shuvo and helped raise 61 for the last wicket before falling to Shane Shillingford and signal the end.
