Brenden Aaronson: Leeds prepare second bid

Leeds United are preparing another offer for top transfer target Brenden Aaronson…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the ever-reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic.

“Leeds United considering upping their bid for Brenden Aaronson to £20m. The club want him in this window, although if RB Salzburg dig their heels in, it’s one which could wait until the summer. Leeds rate him very highly,” he tweeted with an accompanying article.

Earlier this week, the Yorkshire outfit had a £15m bid rejected by the Austrian champions as they remain intent on keeping their star midfielder.

The Yorkshire outfit are said to have sent director of football Victor Orta to Salzburg to try and thrash out a deal, whilst it is believed that they do not want to offload any player this month due to their upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Keep trying!

Indeed, much of the talk suggests that it’s a losing race as the Austrian outfit simply will not sell one of Matthias Jaissle’s key players. However, history would tell us otherwise.

In the past, the club have cashed in on the likes of Erling Haaland (£18m to Borussia Dortmund), Dominik Szoboszlai (£18m t0 RB Leipzig) and Sadio Mane (£10m to Southampton).

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

That suggests that for the right offer, historically, Salzburg have sold. They are ultimately a selling club as they always have young talents being developed.

Therefore, supporters and even manager Marcelo Bielsa should be encouraged by Hay’s latest report as there’s a chance the Austrians cave in, no matter what other claims are telling us.

Aaronson would be a hugely exciting signing for Leeds, too. He very much fits the profile that the Argentinian head coach desires – hard-working, bundles of energy and very, very versatile.

He has delivered ten goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances for Salzburg, via Transfermarkt, whilst American reporters have likened him to both Yossi Benayoun and Clint Dempsey, who both have had an impact in the Premier League in the past.

It appears as if Leeds aren’t giving up, so those around Elland Road must be buzzing by this latest update.

Classic catches, and a failed experiment

Kevin Pietersen just couldn’t switch into top gear•Indian Premier League

On the dime
Confidence is coursing through Anil Kumble’s veins at present. Today, after losing the toss on a flat track, he decided to open the bowling against two devastating batsmen. David Warner was away first ball with a tucked single to square, bringing Virender Sehwag – short of a few runs – on strike. Kumble began with a flipper on the pads which Sehwag failed to connect with. Sehwag missed the second ball while attempting a feisty drive. The third had some flight on it and he drove straight to a fielder. The fifth too was unable to pierce the strong off-side field and the sixth yielded just a single toward deep cover. That was a top over from a veteran slow bowler against two men who feast on spin.Six and out
No reference to the band that Brett Lee used to be part of. Abhimanyu Mithun’s career has progressed rapidly over the past season, with a superb debut Ranji Trophy season leading to an ODI cap. He hadn’t been a part of his home city’s IPL side until this evening, and the young quick made an immediate impact. Not with his first ball, however, which Sehwag carved over six, but with his second. Mithun pulled back the length and got the short ball to follow Sehwag, who for the umpteenth time in his career ended up chopping it onto his stumps. Mithun let out a roar that matched what the Kotla faithful had been bellowing during Sehwag’s all too brief cameo.Throwdown
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s second draft for this match also made his presence felt early in the piece, contributing to send back the other dangerous local Delhi batsman. Warner got cramped by a Jacques Kallis delivery and bunted it to toward cover, where KP Appanna – another hometown boy – ran in and took out the stumps with a direct hit to run-out Gautam Gambhir. One for the classic catches series
Dinesh Karthik’s eyes would have lit up when he saw a wide and short ball from Appanna. He wouldn’t have known, though, that when he smashed that one towards cover, Cameron White would fling himself to his left, get to the ball with both hands, and bring off a stunning catch very low to the ground.A experiment gone awry
Unfortunately for Bangalore, White was nowhere as sharp when he was given the ball right after that catch. There’s a reason why White hasn’t bowled himself much during Victoria’s domestic season. Ricky Ponting also hasn’t turned to him when he’s played limited-overs for Australia of late, and even White seemed a bit surprised that Kumble had picked him to deliver the 12th over. His third ball was so wide outside off that Steve Harmison would have laughed, and when White sent down some embarrassing half-trackers Paul Collingwood thumped two sixes and a four to round off a potentially game-changing 19-run over. That’s one experiment we won’t be seeing any more of.What a letdown
White got a chance to redeem himself when he was promoted to open with Kallis, but he barely managed to get into first gear. After facing eight deliveries for just four singles, and swiping and swishing plenty, White finally connected to one. Up over cover it went, and settled into the specialist long-off Warner’s hands.Slow coach
One can understand that Kallis, the leading run scorer this season, had been instructed to bat out the innings but what was Kevin Pietersen doing? He could not time the ball off the square and indulged in singles against some disciplined bowling from Delhi’s medium-pacer pair of Rajat Bhatia and Pradeep Sangwan. After scratching his way to 16 off 18 balls, Pietersen was put out of his misery on the 19th – a lovely yorker from Sangwan that crashed into the stumps.Men at work
Time was when a running catch on the edge of the cricket field used to get the adrenalin pumping. But in this time of Twenty20, it’s not just cool to take a catch on the run. You have to give it your damndest. What R Sathish, Angelo Mathews and Adam Voges did in the ICL and international Twenty20s over the past two seasons has become all the rage in the IPL. David Hussey and Doug Bollinger pulled off incredible leaping, relaying and parried catches this week and today Warner tried and just failed to become the third Aussie to add one to the collection. He leapt back to try and catch a big hit from Kallis, lost balance, lobbed the ball up, balanced himself and took the catch but immediately signaled that he was not sure whether his back foot had made contact with the rope. Replays showed that it indeed had, and Warner shrugged his shoulder. But it truly is a sign of the times when such efforts are being made with regularity.

Australia's 'Sehwag' unlikely for second Test

Australia are confident Shane Watson will return for the second Test in Hamilton, which would mean the axe for Phillip Hughes despite his final-day blitz

Australia are confident Shane Watson will return for the second Test in Hamilton, which would mean the axe for Phillip Hughes despite his final-day blitz at the Basin Reserve. Hughes raced to an unbeaten 86 from 75 deliveries, dominating Australia’s successful chase of 106, but will probably have to wait for his eighth Test after the team’s physio Alex Kountouris rated Watson a “better than even-money bet” to play at Seddon Park from Saturday. It was only Watson’s hip injury that allowed Hughes to come in for the first Test and he impressed the captain Ricky Ponting by giving Australia a bright start in the first innings and then guiding the chase. Hughes had not passed fifty in a Test since he struck two centuries in Durban last year and Ponting said he could take plenty away from his performance in Wellington.”Every opportunity and every bit of exposure he gets is going to be good for him in the long run,” Ponting said. “He’s just such an exciting player. When he gets in that frame of mind there when the ball’s in his area, it’s going to go. If he keeps getting off to starts like that in Test cricket, it really sets up games. I’ll encourage him to keep playing that way.”Someone like Virender Sehwag is a fairly similar Test match opener to what Hughesy is. Being that sort of player you will have your ups and downs but when you are up you win games and you give your side a good chance to win games.”The success of the No. 6 Marcus North, who entered the match under pressure and made an unbeaten century, means Hughes and Watson cannot fit into one side this week. Just as important as Watson’s batting is his role as a fourth fast bowler, which could be more relevant than usual when the next team is selected. Both teams have only three days between Tests and the fast men will be particularly exhausted after spending four consecutive days, totalling 787 minutes, in the field. It was especially difficult for the debutant Ryan Harris, who toiled into the harsh Wellington wind for most of his 41 overs, having played no other first-class cricket since early December, when he took part in his only Sheffield Shield match of the season.”He’s definitely feeling the pinch, as is Dougie [Bollinger],” Ponting said. “Mitch [Johnson’s] workload over the last couple of years has been exceptional anyway, the way he’s managed to get through and keep presenting in a really good shape. We have to manage them really well in the next couple of days.”[Watson] just gives us so much better balance in our side, the fact that you can throw the ball to him and he can get his 10 or 15 overs out per innings. Every team in the world is after someone who bats in the top six and can bowl like he does. He has shown since he has been in our side just how important he is, so hopefully we’ll get him back. If we do it means the bowlers won’t have to do as much next week.”It was the fast bowlers who ran through New Zealand’s lower order on the fifth morning and ensured a small target of 106 for Australia. Harris began with the key wicket of Brendon McCullum and collected two more, before Johnson finished the innings by bowling Chris Martin. The result justified Ponting’s decision to enforce the follow-on for the second time this summer, a call that began to look a little questionable on the fourth day when McCullum and Daniel Vettori put together a frustrating partnership of 126. However, Ponting said at no stage did he regret declaring so early or bowling again, as the unpredictable Wellington conditions meant he had little choice.”The declaration had a lot to do with what I knew about the weather coming,” he said. “We could have batted on and got 600 or whatever we wanted to, but by doing that and losing the majority of the day yesterday, it would have been touch and go whether we would have got a result in the game. For me and the Australian cricket team it’s all about giving ourselves the best chance of winning.”We’ve done it really well. I’m happy the way the bowlers have stuck at it the last couple of days. We’ve been in the field for four consecutive days, so they’re all a little bit tired and sore in the rooms and we’ll give them a couple of days off and make sure they’re in as good a shape as they can be for the start of the next one.”

Tanguy Ndombele could yet stay at Spurs

Tanguy Ndombele could still remain a Tottenham Hotspur player past January 31st despite reports suggesting otherwise…

What’s the word?

The Frenchman, who cost a club-record £55m in the summer of 2020, was booed by supporters in last weekend’s FA Cup third-round triumph over Morecambe.

As the jeers got louder, Ndombele got slower as he was substituted in the 69th minute, all whilst the side were still 1-0 down to the League One minnows.

After the match, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano delivered an update on his future, claiming that “Tottenham are looking for a solution to sell or loan out Tanguy Ndombele in January,” whilst The Athletic believe the 25-year-old is hopeful for a move away.

However, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Ndombele isn’t unhappy at the club and he could yet stay despite the controversy.

“I’ve done plenty of probing around on this – to see if there’ll be any potential suitors out there for him. The kind of level of club that could potentially pay that money, certainly – let’s obviously talk hypothetically first about any permanent options for him – they’re not desperate for that position,” he revealed to the ‘Last Word on Spurs’ podcast this week.

“I just don’t think there’s the options out there for him this month, Ndombele. And I’ve been told by sources close to the player as well that he’s not unhappy at Spurs, despite his body language the other day.”

Likely to stay?

It would seem that Ndombele is more likely to stay than go right now and that’s hardly a surprise given his reported £200k-per-week wages – who on earth is going to pay that, along with a transfer fee, for a player that has failed to cut it in the Premier League for quite some time?

He missed the midweek defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup but weirdly, manager Antonio Conte hinted at the decision being from above his head. “It was a technical decision, but before to take the decision, I don’t take the decision if I don’t consult the club, there is the club line and I have to follow the club line,” he claimed after the game.

If Conte is still keen to use him and the player isn’t actually unhappy behind the scenes at Hotspur Way, as Thomas suggests, then you’d imagine there are going to be several sections of the Lilywhites’ faithful absolutely fuming.

Once the crowd turns against you in that manner, there is surely no way back but we’ve been here before with Ndombele. He reportedly wanted out under Jose Mourinho. He reportedly wanted out under Nuno Santo. And now here we are with a third successive manager.

It’s no wonder the fans have given up with their club-record signing. He arrived with so much promise from Lyon, only to deliver ten goals and nine assists in 91 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

That means he has a direct contribution once every 4.7 matches, which isn’t good enough for an attacking playmaker.

All in all, there won’t be many pleased with this behind the scenes bombshell from the Sky Sports journalist. With a little over two weeks to go, only time will tell if Ndombele will remain a Spurs player for the foreseeable future.

Players need IPL to develop – Swann

Graeme Swann has followed Paul Collingwood’s lead by expressing disappointment that England players don’t get more exposure to Twenty20 through the IPL

Graeme Swann has followed Paul Collingwood’s lead by expressing disappointment that England players don’t get more exposure to Twenty20 through the IPL.The IPL clashes with England’s tour of Bangladesh which means leading players wouldn’t be available for a chunk of the event and that makes them unattractive to franchises. Swann was put forward for the recent auction ahead of the third season of the IPL, but didn’t come away with a deal as Eoin Morgan was the only Englishman to get snapped up.Swann understands why owners don’t want to throw money at players they won’t see much of, but hopes that there will be a chance in future years of England players seeing more Twenty20 action.”It is disappointing of course but you fully understand it when you’re only available for a three-week window,” he told reporters in Dubai. “I certainly wouldn’t throw any money at an English player if you can only have them for three or four games.”That’s a shame for us as players because I think that if we are going to develop then in an ideal world we would be made available for a lot more of the IPL, but that isn’t for me to decide. It would be nice if we had a chance to play a bit more Twenty20 cricket and in the next few years I’m sure that will be the case.”With many of England’s players not involved with the IPL the two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan are important for the team as they plan for the World Twenty20 in West Indies from the end of April”As it is we can’t complain about that; we just need to use the games we’ve got to make sure we’re good enough to compete and hopefully win in the West Indies,” Swann said.Along with Morgan, who was signed by Bangalore Royal Challengers following his impressive limited-overs performances for England, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen will head to the IPL when the Test series against Bangladesh ends in late March.Swann was seen as a possible contender for a deal this year, despite his limited availability, after an outstanding 12 months coupled with his marketable character. However, despite missing out on a nice pay day Swann sees a positive from the outcome.”I was over the moon when I heard (there had been no offers),” he joked. “I’ve only been married two weeks and she said she’d leave me if I couldn’t go home after this tour.”
