New Zealand's chance to start afresh before Tests

ESPNcricinfo previews the fifth ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Hambantota

The Preview by Andrew Fernando11-Nov-2012Big pictureNew Zealand continue to slide in the rain•Associated Press

Amid monsoon torrents, relocated matches and stomach bugs, New Zealand have so far only sunk further into their rut in Sri Lanka. The second ODI was stopped by rain just as it was building to a climax, but in the following matches, the visitors have been thoroughly outclassed. They have not been helped by the toss, which has fallen against them in two of the three matches, forcing them to contend with a wet ball after the evening rains arrived. But given their poor record in the recent past, the team will be sick of excuses.New Zealand’s batting has been competent at times, and their fast bowlers found decent movement in the fourth ODI in Hambantota, but they are yet to put on a complete performance in the series. New Zealand have also spoken of the soft middle order of Sri Lanka, but have not taken more than three wickets in an innings. They will hope for better luck and more consistency for their quicks if they are to put Sri Lanka’s less experienced batsmen under pressure.Having secured the series, Sri Lanka don’t have much to gain from the final ODI apart from momentum and form ahead of the Test series. Each of Sri Lanka’s big three batsmen have been among the runs, and Test bowlers Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath have also enjoyed the series. They are likely to rotate a few of the fringe members in the squad for some game time.Form guide(Completed matches, most recent first)

New Zealand: LLLLL
Players to watchDinesh Chandimal played and missed plenty of times in his 43 on Saturday, but there were also sparkling strokes amid the nervy ones. He is in the Test squad, but does not have a place in the middle order. If he opens the batting again in the fifth ODI, and is successful, he could put pressure on Test opener Tharanga Paranavitana who has the least secure spot in the batting order.Tim Southee got the ball to move so far in the air and off the seam in the last match, Sri Lanka’s top order had no hope of edging it. If Southee is luckier, he could be the bowler to bare the hosts’ middle order by dismissing the top four quickly.Pitch and conditionsThe forecast predicts rain in the evening, and if the series so far is anything to go by, the teams can expect the final match to be interrupted at some point. In that scenario, the toss is important once again, and the team who wins it will likely want to bowl first. However, as New Zealand proved on Saturday, there is still plenty for the fast bowlers in the Hambantota pitch at night.Team newsSri Lanka will be keen to give their youngsters a pressure-free dead rubber in which to hone their skills, meaning Akila Dananjaya could be in line for an ODI debut. We bat deep, and guys like Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews aren’t just half-bowlers. They are actually very good bowlers to have in your side.””We’re getting pretty used to staying switched on through rain breaks. It seems to happen three or four times every game.”

Ashwin spins India to innings win

For all that spin bowling is considered an art involving guile and deception, India’s spinners took apart the New Zealand batting with the precision of surgeons combined with the calculations of mathematicians

The Report by Sharda Ugra26-Aug-2012

For all that spin bowling is considered an art involving guile and deception, India’s spinners took apart the New Zealand batting with the precision of surgeons combined with the calculation of mathematicians. The first Test in Hyderabad had a severely truncated third day and a slightly curtailed fourth, but ended with a day to spare.India won by an innings and 115 runs, its spinners taking 18 of the 20 wickets to fall. New Zealand, following on in their second innings, were all out for 164 an hour before the scheduled close of play on Sunday, losing their last nine wickets for 66 runs.At the top of the pile stood R Ashwin, who finished the game with his first ten-wicket bag in Tests, taking 6 for 54 in the second innings and a match tally of 12 for 85 – the best figures for an Indian bowler in Tests versus New Zealand.Ashwin sent down a repertoire of flighted off-breaks and top-spinners of varing pace, made canny use of his special “carrom” ball. It helped clean up the New Zealand tail, with four still left for the taking after tea. Ashwin got three of the remaining four, two with the carrom ball that leaves the batsman. Ashwin’s second-innings tally followed up his 6 for 31 in the first.Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha bowled in perfect tandem with Ashwin, both making maximum use of the frequent bite and bounce on the surface, and also the struggle of the New Zealand batsmen against spin. Ojha’s match tally was 6 for 92.The morning session was delayed by two hours due to rain and India’s push for victory was resisted handsomely up by a gutsy 72-run second wicket partnership between Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson. They batted all through the 90 minutes before lunch, scoring 51 careful runs and holding off the Indian spinners.McCullum’s departure early on in the second session gave the Indians the opening. New Zealand’s last nine wickets fell for 66 runs; it had taken a few pieces of masterful spin to pull the ground out from underneath New Zealand’s feet.It all began when McCullum steamed off when given out leg before in Umesh Yadav’s second over after lunch, an inside edge the source of his fury. The sound of the inside edge appeared decisive but replays showed simultaneous points of contact off both bat and pad. McCullum was later reprimanded by the match referee for showing dissent to umpire Steve Davis’ decision. McCullum’s had been a sagacious innings, the perfect senior colleague in partnership with the 22-year-old Williamson, scoring 32 in close to three hours of batting.Until then, McCullum had played the assured hand, Williamson taking the risks of trying to drive against the spin. Ashwin tried to lure him into a false stroke. In the first session, the waiting game worked for New Zealand, Williamson driving Ashwin down the ground for a boundary the moment he over pitched. McCullum pulled out his patent pull shot when Ojha bowled one short and on leg stump. It was New Zealand’s session in which their batsmen held some control. After the break, though, came the deluge. If McCullum fell to a somewhat controversial lbw, seven runs later, Ross Taylor shouldered arms to Ashwin, who got the ball to turn and knock the top of his off stump. Williamson – clearly New Zealand’s batsman of the entire Test – held his own at the other end, getting to 50 with a steer past third man for three. With less than half an hour left for tea, Ojha, who had bowled 11 overs non-stop from one end, came in for his second spell of the day. The second ball was a peach: it looped up towards the stumps and drew Williamson forward. As it pitched, it bounced and turned away from him, nibbled at the edge of Williamson’s bat and flew to Virender Sehwag at first slip.Daniel Flynn, who had until then played foil to Williamson, tried to sweep Ashwin in his 54-minute innings for the first time. The end result was identical to his first innings: unequivocally, leg before for 11. Three runs later, Ashwin worked out the dismissal of James Franklin, with five minutes left for tea. Franklin nicked a climbing off break, and Sehwag dived to his right to take a one-handed catch at first slip. Five wickets had fallen for 54 runs in the 30 overs between lunch and tea. Right there, New Zealand’s time in the Test match was as good as up.

Juventude: Douglas Silva; Felipe Mattioni, Micael, Bonfim e Neuton; Rodrigo, Lucas, Leandro Lima e Denner; Hugo Sanches e Elias. Técnico: Luiz Carlos Winck.

Australia finalise summer schedule

South Africa will play a Gabba Test for the first time in 49 years and Sri Lanka will return to the MCG for their first Boxing Day Test since Muttiah Muralitharan was no-balled for throwing in 1995, as part of Australia’s international schedule for 2012-1

South Africa will play a Gabba Test for the first time in 49 years and Sri Lanka will return to the MCG for their first Boxing Day Test since Muttiah Muralitharan was no-balled for throwing in 1995, as part of Australia’s international schedule for 2012-13. The summer will also feature a Twenty20 against Sri Lanka at Sydney’s Olympic Park on January 26, the first time in a decade Adelaide Oval has missed out on hosting the national team on Australia Day.Australia will also play an international in Canberra for the first time, a one-dayer against West Indies, who will visit for a five-match ODI series in February. The one-day tri-series, which was reinstated last summer when India and Sri Lanka competed, has not surprisingly been ditched again, and both Sri Lanka and West Indies will play separate limited-overs series against Australia. The international season will begin at the Gabba on November 9 with the first Test against South Africa, who will then move on to play Tests in Adelaide from November 22 to 26 and Perth from November 30 to December 4. South Africa’s desire to play cricket at home around the Christmas-New Year period meant the only option was to play them earlier in the season. The Gabba match will be South Africa’s first Test in Brisbane since 1963, when Ian Meckiff was no-balled for throwing and Graeme Pollock made his Test debut. Australia have not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988, when West Indies beat them, and facing Dale Steyn and his colleagues at the venue could provide them with their toughest challenge yet to keep that record alive.Sri Lanka’s three-Test series begins in Hobart on December 14, and it could be an extra special match for the Tasmanian fans. If Ricky Ponting plays all three Tests against South Africa he will be in line to break Steve Waugh’s all-time record of 168 Test appearances for Australia and he will do so at his home ground, Bellerive Oval.Sri Lanka will then play the MCG Boxing Day Test for only the second time, and while the first holds dark memories for the Sri Lankans after Muralitharan’s no-balling, both teams have moved on since then. Ponting is the only man who played in that Test who is likely to be part of this year’s Boxing Day encounter, and the Sri Lankans have enjoyed success at the MCG in the shorter formats over the past few years. The Test summer finishes with the third Test against Sri Lanka, at the SCG from January 3 to 7, before the limited-overs part of the season kicks in. From January 11 to 23, Sri Lanka play five ODIs at the MCG, Adelaide Oval, Gabba, SCG and Bellerive, before two Twenty20 internationals in Sydney on January 26 and Melbourne on January 28.It will be the first time since 2003 that Adelaide Oval has not hosted the national team on Australian Day, a decision that came about largely because the venue is being redeveloped and will have a reduced capacity this summer. Adelaide’s Australia Day tradition is expected to resume when the ground’s redevelopment is complete. The final part of the international summer will consist of five ODIs and a T20 against West Indies from February 1 to 13. As part of Canberra’s centenary celebrations, Manuka Oval will host an ODI on February 6, and the other one-dayers will be held at the WACA, SCG and MCG, before the Gabba finishes the international season with the one-off T20.”Over the last 12 to 24 months we’ve seen some young and exciting talent injected into the Australian men’s team and those changes are starting to reap the rewards of the hard work led by Michael Clarke and Mickey Arthur,” James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said. “The Australian men’s team has a chance to test themselves early in the summer against a very strong South African side and the series is a great way to start the program.”We’re also fortunate to have Sri Lanka back again. They play a very entertaining and attacking style of cricket and as we saw last year have a passionate and vocal fan base around Australia. This year we also return to head-to-head Commonwealth Bank Series and a highlight will be the Australian men’s team first international match in Canberra.”The match is part of a big year of celebrations for Canberra and fans will be spoilt for choice with West Indies playing in the city twice and Sri Lanka once over the course of the summer. The Test and one-day series are again complemented by KFC T20 Internationals, including the Australia Day blockbuster at Sydney Olympic Park that I’m confident will draw a bumper crowd after last year’s first international match at the venue.”Australia’s schedule for 2012-13

Gurkeerat keen to play Ranji Trophy

Gurkeerat Singh, the Kings XI Punjab batsman, has said he hopes the confidence he gained by playing alongside Adam Gilchrist and David Hussey in the IPL will help him make the Punjab squad in the Ranji Trophy this season.Gurkeerat, who scored 86 runs from four innings at 28.66 in the IPL, said that his next goal is to succeed in the domestic season. “Every cricketer grows up with a dream of playing for India and donning the national colours. I also have that dream to follow. To fulfill that dream, I need to do well for Punjab at the domestic circuit,” Gurkeerat told Sportline.”It would be wonderful if I get to taste Ranji Trophy and other eminent tournaments playing for Punjab. I do not want to be labelled a T20 specialist, instead I want to be known as someone who was the best in every format.”Gurkeerat, 21, was picked for Kings XI after scoring heavily in domestic tournaments in the run-up to the IPL. “I had a good season for Punjab in 2010, so I was expecting an IPL call-up last season. However, that did not happen. Having done well for Punjab in T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2011, I had the belief that I would be selected. When Kings XI signed me, I was over the moon.”He said the wait was worth it, as it gave him the chance to rub shoulders with top-class international cricketers. “When you get to face bowlers like Dale Steyn, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel and Shane Watson, as a player one’s confidence levels soar high naturally,” he said. “Then one learns to play under pressure and crunch situations. When established players come with advice, one wants to soak in every bit of it. Not many people knew me before IPL. But now, even when I go to the market people recognise me. So the IPL has been an enriching experience for me.”Gurkeerat’s best IPL display came against Deccan Chargers on May 13, when he scored 29 from 12 balls to help his side win by four wickets. “I just played my natural aggressive game and blasted whatever came my way. Hussey, too, kept pushing me and fortunately, we won the match.”Gilly was quite patient with me during the start of the camp. He would do wicketkeeping drills with me, tell me the wicketkeeping tricks and spend time with me over my batting. Hussey was also a great teacher and I really admired these two men on the cricket field for their professionalism.”Edited by Carlyle Laurie
