Rangers are looking to pick up their second win in the group stage of the Europa League as they face up against Brondby on Thursday night.

They beat their Danish rivals 2-0 in the reverse fixture, which was their only win in the first half of the group stage after losing to both Lyon and Sparta Prague in their first two matches.

Steven Gerrard’s side come into this clash on a high after an emphatic 6-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park over the weekend to extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

He’s a match-winner

One player who must come into the starting XI after the Motherwell victory is Kemar Roofe. He was forced to watch on from the bench for the majority of the game, but Gerrard must unleash him from the start against Brondby as he has the quality to be a match-winner for the club.

The £26k-per-week striker only played 18 minutes at Fir Park and still managed to get himself on the scoresheet as he converted from close range after a Jack Simpson header. That was his fifth in the Premiership this term, despite only starting six games.

Last season, he produced 14 goals in 18 starts in the division as Rangers won the title. This means that he has 19 strikes in his last 24 starts in the league, highlighting his ability to be a match-winner, proving that he can score goals at an impressive rate.

Any player has the potential to be a match-winner in any given game, but he has shown that he can do it reliably and can be trusted to score the goals when they matter. He has also displayed that he can do it in Europe, with a goal against Brondby in a 2-0 win earlier this season

Gers coach Michael Beale previously hailed the forward for his efforts in the final third, helping the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent. He said:

“I think having Kemar Roofe come into the team has brought us a leader in the final third. We forget how young Alfredo is and Ryan Kent.

“They are the same age and we almost forget that with Alfredo because he carries himself with such strength and he’s so commanding on the pitch but he’s a young man.

“So I think having Kemar in there who is a little bit older brings us that bit of experience.”

This highlights the impact he can have on those around him as well as his quality as a football player. He could help, for example, Ianis Hagi and Fashion Sakala to up their own game against Brondby by leading on the pitch and showing an example of how they should be acting.

Therefore, Gerrard must unleash Roofe from the start in the Europa League on Thursday night. He could be the player to win them the match with his impressive goal record whilst offering the experience to improve those playing alongside him.

The ICC has requested England fast bowler Stuart Broad not to repeat his controversial attempts to distract a batsman as displayed during the Super Eights match against South Africa. Even relatively unknown names like Yusuf Abdulla, who was drafted in to cover for the injured Jerome Taylor, have stood up to be counted.With spin increasingly proving to be effective on dry pitches, they will be relying heavily on Piyush Chawla and Ramesh Powar. Irfan Pathan has also hit a purple patch and VRV Singh turned in a frugal spell in the last game that he played. Sunderland confirmed on Thursday that forward Benji Kimpioka has returned to the club from Southend United.

And, as to be expected, a number of Black Cats supporters have been reacting to the transfer news on social media.

Kimpioka made the move to Roots Hall at the end of September on a month-long loan. He made just two appearances during that time and has now returned to Sunderland’s Under-23 squad.

The 21-year-old’s contract at the Stadium of Light expires at the end of the season and he is yet to add to his 14 senior appearances for Sunderland during the current campaign.

Kimpioka, a Sweden Under-21 international, also struggled out on loan with Torquay United last season, with his last senior goal coming back in November 2019 against Coventry City.

Noel Whelan says the prospect of Jesse Lingard signing for Everton is ‘mouthwatering’. 

The former Leeds United forward was discussing the future of the Manchester United ace with Football Insider.

The lowdown

The publication reported on Saturday that, should United agree to let Lingard leave in January, Everton would be at the front of the queue.

West Ham, who had him on loan for the latter half of the 2020/21 campaign, and Newcastle United are also said to be keeping tabs on his situation.

However, Everton have a key advantage in that Lingard would prefer to remain in the north-west of England.

Lingard netted nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers but has been limited to 55 minutes of Premier League action this season (via WhoScored).

Significantly, the Englishman’s contract is up in the summer, meaning United could be tempted to cash-in at the mid-point of the season.

Whelan says that Lingard could represent a belated replacement for James Rodriguez, who left in September.

He reckons that the 28-year-old would elevate Everton’s entire frontline.

“I think Everton are missing that number 10, absolutely,” he said to FI. “Now that [James] Rodriguez has gone, you’re missing that X factor, that one player that can produce, that can open up the doors.

“Think about the players on either side of what he could have as well, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison. It’s a mouthwatering prospect thinking about the front four they could have.

“Jesse Lingard could be that missing piece of the puzzle. He could bring the best out of that front three. There’s no doubt in my mind if he did go to Everton, West Ham, wherever, he would be a success.”

The verdict

It was a little surprising if Lingard didn’t wind up at West Ham, because it seemed like a move that made sense for all parties.

Geography played its part, but surely he would have also expected to feature more prominently for the Red Devils?

It’s hard to see him committing his peak years to United given his current squad role. Everton could well be wise to pounce.

Tottenham Hotspur finally got back to winning ways in the Premier League after they defeated Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Nuno Santo’s men had been thumped in each of their last three outings, the last of which being an embarrassing north London derby defeat to Arsenal a week ago but clearly, the Lilywhites put those ghosts in the past to deliver one of their most impressive performances of the 2021/22 campaign.

Heung-min Son was one major catalyst towards the three points as he provided an assist for both of their goals – the first time that Spurs had scored more than one goal in any league game this term.

Although he wasn’t the highest-rated player on SofaScore.

That acclaim went to Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was graded an 8.0, in comparison to the South Korean’s 7.3.

The 26-year-old even opened the scoring for Spurs with a cool finish from the edge of the penalty box after he received the ball from Son just 27 minutes into the match.

But Hojbjerg’s contribution didn’t stop there as he was a constant thorn in Dean Smith’s side all afternoon.

Only one other player (Emerson, 86) recorded more touches than the £36m-rated powerhouse (84), proving he was an influential figure in the engine room, playing alongside Oliver Skipp and Tanguy Ndombele.

The 21-year-old gem’s involvement has allowed the Dane to have more of an influence in the final third, hence why he was in the right spot at the right time to get himself on the scoresheet.

He made 89% of his 66 passing attempts, which was the best of any Spurs starter, whilst he also managed six successful dribbles from six attempts (100%). It suggests that he played a key role in linking the midfield to the attack.

By comparison, more-attack minded players like Son (three) and Ndombele (one) managed far fewer.

Elsewhere, Hojbjerg still did his defensive duties a lot of justice – as per SofaScore, he managed two tackles, two clearances, one interception and even won nine of 12 duels (75%).

football.london’s Alasdair Gold described the 6 foot 1 midfielder as a “big presence”, whilst the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick claimed he was “tidy on the ball and shielded the back four well from the threat of John McGinn.”

On the above evidence, you could argue that Hojbjerg ran the show for Nuno and Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He was different class and deserves just as many plaudits as Son.
