Speaking to Football Insider, BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has been left in disbelief at something Fabio Paratici has been doing at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Paratici cooking…

It’s safe to say the Paratici era at Spurs is well and truly underway and his first transfer window arguably went smoothly, albeit not exactly mind blowing.

The Italian transfer chief managed to shift plenty of deadwood, freeing up some much-needed salary space, whilst making shrewd signings in promising starlets Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr.

In terms of more senior first-teamers, 2020/2021 Serie A MVP award-winner Cristian Romero comes in as a hopeful solution to Tottenham’s long-time central defensive issues and Pierluigi Gollini adds some steel between the sticks.

Spurs also snapped up exciting full-back Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

Paratici has been a busy man at Spurs, with former Lilywhites defender Hutton in disbelief at something else he has been doing.

Speaking to Football Insider, the BBC Radio 5 Live pundit and ex-Scotland international has been left baffled by his decision to sit in the dug-out with Tottenham players during Premier League matches so far this season.

Both the 49-year-old and fellow club chief Steve Hitchen have been present in the technical area for Spurs’ last two home matches in the English top flight, something which is said to unsettle some Lilywhites players according to The Sun.

Giving his take, Hutton is in full agreement that this practice is ‘strange’.

“That’s a strange one – I’ve never seen that before,” he explained.

“You don’t see Daniel Levy down there sitting next to the manager.

“I know the manager and the director of football have to have a good working relationship, but when it comes to game day and matters on the field – it’s all about the manager and the players.

“I don’t think the director of football has to be anywhere near that.

“He’s done his job with the recruitment; he doesn’t have to be down there.

“If I was sitting there and the director of football was sat next to me – that would feel a little bit strange.”

The Verdict: Unneccessary?

While it is fairly entertaining as a bystander getting to watch the enigmatic Paratici and co in the dugout with Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, if it makes players uncomfortable, the former Juventus transfer guru should return upstairs.

The last thing Nuno needs as he aims to nurture Tottenham’s steady momentum is needless disruption, especially from the club’s managing director of all people.

Ryan Finnigan is getting rave reviews in the Southampton academy, and if he continues to impress, he could even prove to be the Saints’ next James Ward-Prowse.

Southampton gained a reputation for establishing young talents such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Luke Shaw and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the past, whilst Ward-Prowse has come through the academy and become the captain of the first team.

However he and Jack Stephens, are really the only current examples of regular players to start their careers with Southampton’s academy before moving into the first team, with the Saints opting to aggressively target youngsters from other clubs in this summer’s transfer window.

The likes of Alexandre Jankewitz and Michael Obafemi, who were arguably two of the brightest young talents at St Mary’s, both left on permanent deals this summer, so there is arguably a shortage of homegrown academy players who are close to breaking into the first team at Southampton.

Finnigan could well prove to be an exception, with the 17-year-old seemingly set for a big future with the Saints’ first team.

The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon sang his praises on the Total Saints podcast recently, saying: “You speak to people within the club, they do generally rave about him.

“They think, of all the academy players kind of coming through at the moment, he’s the one that stands out the most.”

Ralph Hasenhuttl also spoke about Finnigan and fellow youngster Oludare Olufunwa after they appeared in a pre-season friendly against Swansea City, saying: “Very good, I must say they are getting stronger every day and when we are working together, it’s good for them to be with the first team.

“It’s good for them to learn quick and always a fantastic opportunity for the young lads to be part of the game.”

As a central midfielder who is making waves in the Southampton academy, there are clear similarities between Finnigan and Ward-Prowse.

If he can prove to be even half as good as Ward-Prowse has been at Southampton, with the England international contributing 34 goals and 42 assists in 326 appearances for the first team so far in his career, then Finnigan will surely prove to be a big hit with the St Mary’s faithful in the future.
