Spurs: Lautaro Martinez update emerges

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Lautaro Martinez to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Jacque Talbot, with the Football Transfers journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Fabio Paratici is a big fan of the Inter Milan centre-forward, before going on to claim that the Spurs sporting director even attempted to sign the 24-year-old in the January window.

In a further tweet, Talbot confirmed that both Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are once again interested in the signing of the Argentina international at the end of the current campaign, with recent reports from Italy suggesting that the Serie A side would be willing to accept an offer of between €60m-€70m (£50m-£58m) for Martinez this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

In his post, the transfer insider said: “In what’s becoming a running trend, our story from two weeks ago confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have interest in Lautaro Martinez of Inter.”

Talbot continued: “We’re told Spurs sporting director Fabio Paratici is a fan of the 24-year-old and even tried to do a deal for him in January. While Atletico readying themselves for Luis Suarez’s departure when his contract is up in two months and see the 24-year-old as the ideal replacement.”

A steal at £58m

Following his £22.5m move to Inter back in the summer of 2018, Martinez quickly has gone on to establish himself as one of the most dangerous centre-forwards in world football – bagging 69 goals and registering 23 assists over his 175 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

A large portion of these goal involvements came under the stewardship of Antonio Conte, with the Argentine hitman finding the back of the net 40 times and providing 19 assists in 97 outings over the course of the 52-year-old manager’s two-year spell in charge at the San Siro.

The £177k-per-week striker’s best campaign for Conte undoubtedly came last season, when, over his 38 Serie A fixtures, the 24-year-old scored 17 goals, registered ten assists and created nine big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.9 shots and making one key pass per game.

These returns saw the £63m-rated forward average a quite extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as the Italian’s third-best player in the league – playing a starring role in Inter’s title-winning campaign.

As such, with Conte clearly knowing how to get the best out of Martinez, it is undeniable that the centre-forward would make an exceptional addition to the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski in the Tottenham Hotspur attack.

And, when considering that Inter were reported to have rejected Tottenham’s €95m (£80m) bid for the striker just eight months ago, should the 37-time capped international indeed be available for just £58m this summer, it is clear to see that Fabio Paratici could secure a steal by landing the 24-year-old.

Injuries have forced Umar Gul and Bilawal Bhatti out of the Pakistan squad for the remaining three ODIs against New Zealand. Fast bowler Anwar Ali and legspinner Yasir Shah have been picked as their replacements.Misbah-ul-Haq will also miss the remaining three ODIs due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the second ODI in Sharjah*. Shahid Afridi will lead the side in his absence. Misbah sustained an injury in the third over of New Zealand’s chase on Friday and did not take the field for the rest of the game. However, the PCB have not taken a decision on whether Misbah will stay with the team or return to Pakistan.Following a long injury lay-off, Gul made his return to international cricket in the second T20 against New Zealand. He played the first ODI but was dropped from the second due to a bruised tendon in his left ankle. He aggravated his same injury that kept him out through 2013. He underwent a surgery last year in Australia but his fitness has been talking point since than. Bhatti, meanwhile, is out due to a hand injury.”With fitness issues ruling them out for the duration of the next three ODIs, Umar Gul (injury to left tendon), Bilawal Bhatti (stitches in the right hand webbing) are being sent back home to go through recovery and rehabilitation, and pace bowler Anwar Ali and legspinner Yasir Shah have been recalled,” Pakistan chief selector and manager Moin Khan said.”With all-rounder Anwar Ali coming over, our strength in pace would be restored while Yasir Shah has performed very well in recent matches and his presence would give our attack a well-rounded look. The leggie is also a good prospect for us for the ICC World Cup 2015, so more exposure would do him a world of good.”Shah played his only ODI for Pakistan in September 2011 against Zimbabwe. However, he was impressive in the Test series against Australia and New Zealand. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the two Tests against Australia, finishing his debut series with 12 wickets. In the three Tests against New Zealand, Shah finished as the top wicket-taker, bagging 15 wickets. Anwar, meanwhile, played both T20 games against New Zealand but had been excluded from the squad for the first two ODIs.Mohammad Hafeez, who was supposed to be released from the ODI squad in order to work on his action, has been retained. The PCB had said that Hafeez would be sent to Chennai to work with biomechanists and correct his bowling action, which was deemed illegal by the ICC earlier in the month. The selectors decided to retain him in the squad until his India visa is cleared.Pakistan squad for three ODIs: Ahmed Shehzad, Anwar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Hafeez, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Irfan, Nasir Jamshed, Sarfraz Ahmad (wk), Shahid Afridi (capt), Sohail Tanvir, Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Younis Khan, Zulfiqar Babar* 1800 GMT. Rain washes out first ODI

The opening match of the three-game India-Australia series was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Kochi

The opening match of the three-game India-Australia series was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Kochi. Heavy rain before the one-dayer saturated the ground and while the weather was clear at the scheduled start time, the clouds returned to send everyone home.It was an unfortunate result for the thousands of locals who were filling the stadium in their blue shirts. Both teams are fielding inexperienced squads so the expectation was high, but everyone will have to wait for the second match in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. The Kerala Cricket Association has been criticised by former BCCI secretary SK Nair, who said better arrangements with respect to drainage and scheduling could have been made to prevent an abandonment. “This was not for the first time that an international match was planned in Kochi. In the past, organisers had been able to successfully overcome whatever problems came in the way. This time too, the organisers should have put in place a plan to overcome the hitches,” Nair said.TC Mathew, the KCA secretary, responded saying all possible measures had been taken but heavy rains made it impossible for the match to take place. The series concludes in Goa on Sunday.

Australia falter after Misbah record

Pakistan’s UAE flattening of Australia entered totally unprecedented dimensions on day four in Abu Dhabi, as Misbah’s second century of the match occupied just 56 balls, equalling Viv Richards’ record

The Report by Daniel Brettig02-Nov-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMisbah-ul-Haq smashed his way to the joint-fastest Test century•Getty Images

Ever heard the one about when Misbah-ul-Haq thrashed Australia for the equal fastest Test hundred of all time? What about the one where the Pakistan cricket team, at their home in exile, battered powerful Australia by margins unmatched in Test history? Didn’t think so.Pakistan’s UAE flattening of Australia entered totally unprecedented dimensions on day four in Abu Dhabi, as Misbah’s second century of the match occupied just 56 balls – the same tally required by Viv Richards against England in Antigua 28 years ago.Michael Clarke’s team were left speechless by the hail of runs, and slipped meekly to 143 for 4 by the close in a nominal pursuit of 603 to win. Chris Rogers, Glenn Maxwell and Clarke all fell cheaply, while David Warner squandered a sound start with a miscued slog. Steven Smith and Mitchell Marsh fought gamely through the final hour, momentarily halting the procession. The symbolism of Misbah’s innings was immense, utterly humbling Australia in a series where they have conceded all manner of records for differentials between two teams. Foregoing his usually obstinate tendencies, Misbah took 22 runs from one Steve Smith over and needed just 21 balls to reach 50, bettering the record 24 deliveries taken by Jacques Kallis to set the previous record, before going on to match Richards. He had been dropped second ball by Peter Siddle off Smith’s bowling.Amid records for Misbah, Azhar Ali’s second hundred of the match went by almost unnoticed, but his achievement of three figures moved Misbah to declare. Their dual hundreds were the first time two batsmen had scored Test centuries in each innings for the same team since Greg and Ian Chappell against New Zealand in 1974.Younis Khan was the only wicket of the day for Pakistan, his lbw the signal for a somewhat overdone reaction by Warner, who clapped mockingly in the face of the series’ highest run-scorer. Azhar Ali was also dropped by the substitute Phillip Hughes in the gully as part of a bedraggled Australian performance in the field that did not bode well for their time with the bat.Rogers duly perished when he nibbled Zulfiqar Babar to leg slip, before Maxwell completed what could be the only match he may ever play as Australia’s No. 3 batsman by missing another straight delivery from Babar to fall lbw on review. In a 12-ball stay, he had also nearly been bowled after missing a highly ambitious attempt to reverse sweep Mohammad Hafeez.Clarke’s poor series has been another major factor in the gulf between the teams, and here he was turned inside out on the crease by Babar. It was a decent ball, but Clarke’s leaden feet contrasted sharply with those of his not-so-much younger self, which would likely have danced their way out of trouble. The difference with his opposite number Misbah was equally stark – it is the Pakistan captain who has looked and acted as though the younger man, despite his 40 years.Misbah’s innings had begun with a generous Smith full toss that was slapped down the ground, but next ball a miscued attempt to swing the legspinner over the fence resulted in an edge that floated towards Siddle, who grassed the chance. From there, Misbah took fearsome revenge on Smith for dismissing him twice in the series, collaring decently pitched balls with near impunity, seemingly oblivious to where Clarke posted fielders. His half-century arrived from the final ball of the morning, and he and Azhar left their gloves and bats by the boundary’s edge. After lunch, Misbah’s pace slackened only mildly, and it took a fine over of full-pitched reverse swing by Siddle to ensure he did not beat Richards. As it was, a slog to midwicket then a fortuitous edge to third man took Misbah level with the Master Blaster, a proud moment for Pakistan’s captain and the latest indignity inflicted upon Australia in this lopsided series.Mitchell Johnson ended Pakistan’s innings out of the bowling attack and off the field nursing a sore hip, while Brad Haddin did not keep wicket at all due to what has been revealed to be a hideously bruised shoulder. That being said, it looked better than the scoreboard.

Everton eye Burnley ace Tarkowski

Mark Douglas has now revealed some big Everton news involving both Farhad Moshiri and James Tarkowski.

The Lowdown: Centre-back wanted

The Goodison Park faithful have been linked with moves for the likes of Levi Colwill, Kim Min-Jae and Gleison Bremer in the summer, suggesting that they are after a new central defender.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League, and Jamie Carragher has even went as far as to claim that they have a ‘Championship back four’ during the embarrassing defeat at Tottenham.

Nonetheless, it is one area that the Merseyside club will surely look to strengthen.

The Latest: Tarkowski eyed

Writing in his latest piece for iNews, journalist Douglas has revealed that Tarkowski has now ’emerged’ as a potential target this summer.

Senior sources at the Toffees have claimed that there is ‘no way’ that Moshiri is going to sell the club, despite Russian links with Alisher Usmanov, and Frank Lampard can ‘expect to be backed’ in the market.

The Verdict: No-brainer

Given the fact that Tarkowski is out of contract at Burnley in the summer, he will be able to leave as a free agent, and so it would be a no-brainer for the Blues to sign him up.

Described as a ‘real leader’ by pundit Noel Whelan, the 29-year-old could be the organiser at the back that Lampard’s team need in order to be more solid and ship fewer goals.

Of course, he has plenty of experience of playing in the top flight, and so should be able to settle in fairly quickly.

Sky Sports keeps BT at bay

Sky Sports has resisted the pressure from BT Sport to retain the ICC events in the latest cycle of rights

Sky Sports continues to dominate the cricket TV market in the UK•Getty Images

Sky Sports has resisted the pressure from BT Sport to retain the ICC events in the latest cycle of rights. On the same day as the ICC announced a new deal with Star India and Star Middle East for the global rights, Sky Sports confirmed it will retain an exclusive deal with Star to broadcast in the UK and Ireland. The ICC rights for 2015-2023 are significant for the UK market as England and Wales will host the Champions Trophy in 2017 and World Cup in 2019 as well as the Women’s World Cup in 2017.BT’s emergence into the UK market has brought increased competition for Sky as witnessed by their strong push for Premier League and UEFA Champions Leagues rights. BT has so far dipped its toe into the cricket market by showing the Caribbean Premier League and is understood to be keen to go further.Negotiations for the ECB’s next batch of rights will begin shortly and Sky could face greater competition, especially if the ECB decides to package their live rights differently rather than in the single bundle which Sky currently has in a deal running until 2017 with the option of a two-year extension. The new ECB chief executive, Tom Harrison, who was announced last week in news overshadowed by the fallout from Kevin Pietersen’s autobiography, is currently a senior figure at sports marketing agency IMG and has been involved with TV rights including the IPL, which Sky will show for the first time next year. The IPL was previously available on ITV which made it a rare free-air-offering in the UK. From next year, the only cricket available without a subscription package will be England’s home international highlights which appear on Channel 5. There has been no live England cricket on free-to-air TV in the UK since 2005.
