Bell wants more vigilance at televised county games

England batsman Ian Bell has said increased anti-corruption measures could be needed for televised domestic gamees

England batsman Ian Bell has said increased anti-corruption measures could be needed for televised domestic games to prevent further cases of spot-fixing like those revealed by Lou Vincent to the ACSU. The ECB, however, does not believe there is a need for the same level of restrictions on electronic devices players are allowed to use in domestic cricket as there is at international level. The vulnerability of county cricket is back in the headlines after the reports of Vincent’s confessions and details of the breadth of fixing at domestic level around the world. Three county matches are among those under scrutiny, all of which were televised in Asia. For international matches, players and support staff are required to hand over their phones, iPads and other electronic devices to the team manager or security officer and are not allowed them back until the end of the day. In county cricket, there are no such steps taken. Though there is no suggestion that players were directly tapped up in the dressing room, it does leave a potential loophole to be exploited.”From where I can see, I haven’t played one [on TV] for a while for Warwickshire, but it’s just a normal county game,” Bell said. “It’s different internationally where you have to hand your phones in. In county games there is nothing. You could be on your phone all day if you want. Maybe if it is on television then it has to be the same as an international game.”I’ve never seen it [fixing] at domestic level but then you hear what has been going on, not just in England but all around the world … there probably has to be a bit more done domestically as well.”The most recent county match to have emerged from Vincent’s claims is from 2011. That was the year the ECB’s anti-corruption unit was set up under Chris Watts, a former senior detective with the Metropolitan Police, and his team now have an official at every televised match. The ECB does not feel further restrictions are required.”We don’t feel the need to take away players’ mobile phones or laptops at televised county matches. It is a judgement call made by the anti-corruption unit,” an ECB spokesman said. “We are constantly vigilant but don’t believe corruption is endemic in county cricket. We take measures proportional to the level of threat.”The ECB’s anti-corruption unit is very active around televised county matches. Chris Watts set up the unit in 2011 and his team has been strengthened so that there are now seven anti-corruption officers who work on the domestic programme.”They are a physical presence at every televised match and frequently go into dressing-rooms and talk to players. We certainly can’t be complacent. The Mervyn Westfield affair showed that some players – and particularly young players – can be vulnerable.”Westfield was jailed for four months in 2012 for his part in spot-fixing during a televised Pro40 match against Essex in 2009 after being tapped up by former Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria.Bell said he had never been approached at any level or spoken to anyone in English domestic cricket who had concerns over a match being rigged. He was shocked by the extent of the claims emerging from Vincent during his plea-bargain with the ICC.”It’s frustrating to see it cropping again. Lou Vincent is saying that it’s in five different countries that he’s played in. That’s unbelievable. You’d like to think we can get to the bottom of it but whether we will or not is a difficult one to answer.Bell was not involved in the 2010 Test against Pakistan, at Lord’s, which is the highest profile recent case of spot-fixing. It led to jail terms for Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, and Bell believes harsh penalties are the way forward.”Seeing people getting the right penalties for a massive wrongdoing in the game, it’s important that we have that. The harsher the penalties, the better. The last thing you want is to look back on games you’ve played in and have to ask ‘was that real or was it not?’ It takes away some of the feelings you have, when you look back and are not quite sure.”Investec, the specialist bank and asset manager, is the title sponsor of Test match cricket in England.

South Africa hope for Steyn present

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur is confident Dale Steyn will be fit to resume his new-ball duties in the second Test at Durban

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur is confident Dale Steyn will be fit to resume his new-ball duties in the second Test at Durban. The fast bowler came through 10 overs on Wednesday without any reaction and the hosts hope to make a final decision on Christmas Day.Steyn was ruled out shortly before the toss at Centurion after pulling up stiff on the morning of the game, which allowed Friedel de Wet to make his debut and the 29-year-old produced a stunning new-ball burst on the final afternoon to almost snatch victory. However, despite an impressive first appearance, de Wet would be the man to miss out if Steyn makes his return.”Dale has come on nicely,” Arthur said. “We will still wait and see on that department. He bowled 10 overs at virtually full pace yesterday and there’s been no comeback so I’m pretty sure he’ll be fit to take his place. We certainly don’t want to be going in as we were at Centurion where everything seems fine then he was tight on the morning of the game. We’d certainly like to take the call on Dale tomorrow.”De Wet’s performance has bolstered South Africa’s quick-bowling ranks and prompted speculation over the future of Makhaya Ntini who managed just two wickets in his 100th Test. Arthur, though, added his complete backing of Ntini to that of Graeme Smith on Wednesday, but is delighted that the first-choice quicks are being put under pressure by the emergence of new names.”Ntini has taken some flak and I’m not 100% sure why,” Arthur said. “I thought he did a fairly decent job for us. He performed a role, but I guess there was always going to be the speculation once Friedel rocked up and nearly bowled us to victory. The whole bowling unit will feel it now, not just Makhaya.”Friedel was fantastic and it puts another guy in the queue. It’s another guy we have given a match to and he has shown what he can do. He puts a lot of pressure on the other bowlers to perform. But we’ll probably go back to our tried and tested for what is a really important Test.”They all know a guy is in the wings waiting for an opportunity and that’s a really healthy position. I don’t mind there being some pressure on the bowlers, but those who are playing know they have the full backing of myself and Graeme.”Arthur is also keen to reunite the attack that played such a key role in propelling South Africa to No. 1 in the world now that Morne Morkel is also back in the line-up having been dropped for the final Test against Australia in March.”We still back Makhaya hugely and we go back to the success we’ve had in recent times – it has come from an attack of Steyn, Ntini, Morkel, Harris and Kallis so I can’t see us differing too much from that if all things are equal,” he said. “Morne is a genuine wicket-taker and gets good players out. There were some very good spells and some mediocre ones [at Centurion] but he’s coming on leaps and bounds and troubles most batters around the world. And if we can get Dale back with his swing we look a really good attack again.”The fifth member of the attack, Jacques Kallis, will be treated carefully as he continues to recover from his rib injury although could take on an increased workload. He bowled three gentle overs on the final day at Centurion, but showed his immense value to the side as a batsman with 120 in the first innings and Arthur doesn’t want to risk aggravating the injury.”Jacques we’ll be a little bit conservative with. As a fifth bowler you aren’t looking for too many overs and we wouldn’t want to push him and risk further injury down the line,” he said. “But he’s looking okay as well so hopefully we can get maybe 12 overs from him in a day.”

Glamorgan have brought in Middlesex seamer Tom Helm on a month’s loan, as well as signed former Surrey batsman Tom Lancefield on a one-year contract. Helm will help provide cover for Michael Hogan, who is currently back in Australia for the birth of his second child.Helm, 19, has been part of the England Potential Performance Programme for the last two winters and took five wickets on his Championship debut against Yorkshire last season. He goes straight into Glamorgan’s squad for the visit of Worcestershire.”I’ve been aware of the progress Tom Helm has made in recent years and his development work with the EPPP,” Glamorgan’s chief executive and director of cricket, Hugh Morris, said. “I’ve been getting encouraging reports on him regularly and he’s one of the brightest fast bowling talents in the country.”Clearly with an international calibre bowling attack at Middlesex, his chances there have been limited, but we can provide him with an opportunity and we’re thankful to Angus Fraser and Middlesex CCC for allowing us to have Tom for the next month.”Lancefield was released by Surrey at the end of the 2012 and has since played for the Unicorns as well as 2nd XI cricket for various counties. A left-handed opener, he scored more than 600 runs in all competitions for Glamorgan’s second team in 2013.Essex, meanwhile, have moved to bolster an injury-hit squad ahead of their Division Two match against Leicestershire. David Masters, Graham Napier and Saj Mahmood are all unavailable, leading to Oliver Newby’s arrival on loan from Lancashire. With Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara away with England and Nick Browne, Tom Craddock and Tim Phillips all suffering from broken fingers, Essex have also registered allrounder Tanweer Sikander, who plays minor counties cricket for Hertfordshire.
