Australia falter after Misbah record

Pakistan’s UAE flattening of Australia entered totally unprecedented dimensions on day four in Abu Dhabi, as Misbah’s second century of the match occupied just 56 balls, equalling Viv Richards’ record

The Report by Daniel Brettig02-Nov-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMisbah-ul-Haq smashed his way to the joint-fastest Test century•Getty Images

Ever heard the one about when Misbah-ul-Haq thrashed Australia for the equal fastest Test hundred of all time? What about the one where the Pakistan cricket team, at their home in exile, battered powerful Australia by margins unmatched in Test history? Didn’t think so.Pakistan’s UAE flattening of Australia entered totally unprecedented dimensions on day four in Abu Dhabi, as Misbah’s second century of the match occupied just 56 balls – the same tally required by Viv Richards against England in Antigua 28 years ago.Michael Clarke’s team were left speechless by the hail of runs, and slipped meekly to 143 for 4 by the close in a nominal pursuit of 603 to win. Chris Rogers, Glenn Maxwell and Clarke all fell cheaply, while David Warner squandered a sound start with a miscued slog. Steven Smith and Mitchell Marsh fought gamely through the final hour, momentarily halting the procession. The symbolism of Misbah’s innings was immense, utterly humbling Australia in a series where they have conceded all manner of records for differentials between two teams. Foregoing his usually obstinate tendencies, Misbah took 22 runs from one Steve Smith over and needed just 21 balls to reach 50, bettering the record 24 deliveries taken by Jacques Kallis to set the previous record, before going on to match Richards. He had been dropped second ball by Peter Siddle off Smith’s bowling.Amid records for Misbah, Azhar Ali’s second hundred of the match went by almost unnoticed, but his achievement of three figures moved Misbah to declare. Their dual hundreds were the first time two batsmen had scored Test centuries in each innings for the same team since Greg and Ian Chappell against New Zealand in 1974.Younis Khan was the only wicket of the day for Pakistan, his lbw the signal for a somewhat overdone reaction by Warner, who clapped mockingly in the face of the series’ highest run-scorer. Azhar Ali was also dropped by the substitute Phillip Hughes in the gully as part of a bedraggled Australian performance in the field that did not bode well for their time with the bat.Rogers duly perished when he nibbled Zulfiqar Babar to leg slip, before Maxwell completed what could be the only match he may ever play as Australia’s No. 3 batsman by missing another straight delivery from Babar to fall lbw on review. In a 12-ball stay, he had also nearly been bowled after missing a highly ambitious attempt to reverse sweep Mohammad Hafeez.Clarke’s poor series has been another major factor in the gulf between the teams, and here he was turned inside out on the crease by Babar. It was a decent ball, but Clarke’s leaden feet contrasted sharply with those of his not-so-much younger self, which would likely have danced their way out of trouble. The difference with his opposite number Misbah was equally stark – it is the Pakistan captain who has looked and acted as though the younger man, despite his 40 years.Misbah’s innings had begun with a generous Smith full toss that was slapped down the ground, but next ball a miscued attempt to swing the legspinner over the fence resulted in an edge that floated towards Siddle, who grassed the chance. From there, Misbah took fearsome revenge on Smith for dismissing him twice in the series, collaring decently pitched balls with near impunity, seemingly oblivious to where Clarke posted fielders. His half-century arrived from the final ball of the morning, and he and Azhar left their gloves and bats by the boundary’s edge. After lunch, Misbah’s pace slackened only mildly, and it took a fine over of full-pitched reverse swing by Siddle to ensure he did not beat Richards. As it was, a slog to midwicket then a fortuitous edge to third man took Misbah level with the Master Blaster, a proud moment for Pakistan’s captain and the latest indignity inflicted upon Australia in this lopsided series.Mitchell Johnson ended Pakistan’s innings out of the bowling attack and off the field nursing a sore hip, while Brad Haddin did not keep wicket at all due to what has been revealed to be a hideously bruised shoulder. That being said, it looked better than the scoreboard.

Injured Gul, Bhatti out of NZ ODIs

Injuries have forced Umar Gul and Bilawal Bhatti out of the Pakistan squad for the remaining three ODIs against New Zealand

Injuries have forced Umar Gul and Bilawal Bhatti out of the Pakistan squad for the remaining three ODIs against New Zealand. Fast bowler Anwar Ali and legspinner Yasir Shah have been picked as their replacements.Misbah-ul-Haq will also miss the remaining three ODIs due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the second ODI in Sharjah*. Shahid Afridi will lead the side in his absence. Misbah sustained an injury in the third over of New Zealand’s chase on Friday and did not take the field for the rest of the game. However, the PCB have not taken a decision on whether Misbah will stay with the team or return to Pakistan.Following a long injury lay-off, Gul made his return to international cricket in the second T20 against New Zealand. He played the first ODI but was dropped from the second due to a bruised tendon in his left ankle. He aggravated his same injury that kept him out through 2013. He underwent a surgery last year in Australia but his fitness has been talking point since than. Bhatti, meanwhile, is out due to a hand injury.”With fitness issues ruling them out for the duration of the next three ODIs, Umar Gul (injury to left tendon), Bilawal Bhatti (stitches in the right hand webbing) are being sent back home to go through recovery and rehabilitation, and pace bowler Anwar Ali and legspinner Yasir Shah have been recalled,” Pakistan chief selector and manager Moin Khan said.”With all-rounder Anwar Ali coming over, our strength in pace would be restored while Yasir Shah has performed very well in recent matches and his presence would give our attack a well-rounded look. The leggie is also a good prospect for us for the ICC World Cup 2015, so more exposure would do him a world of good.”Shah played his only ODI for Pakistan in September 2011 against Zimbabwe. However, he was impressive in the Test series against Australia and New Zealand. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the two Tests against Australia, finishing his debut series with 12 wickets. In the three Tests against New Zealand, Shah finished as the top wicket-taker, bagging 15 wickets. Anwar, meanwhile, played both T20 games against New Zealand but had been excluded from the squad for the first two ODIs.Mohammad Hafeez, who was supposed to be released from the ODI squad in order to work on his action, has been retained. The PCB had said that Hafeez would be sent to Chennai to work with biomechanists and correct his bowling action, which was deemed illegal by the ICC earlier in the month. The selectors decided to retain him in the squad until his India visa is cleared.Pakistan squad for three ODIs: Ahmed Shehzad, Anwar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Hafeez, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Irfan, Nasir Jamshed, Sarfraz Ahmad (wk), Shahid Afridi (capt), Sohail Tanvir, Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Younis Khan, Zulfiqar Babar* 1800 GMT. Van Wyk century leads SA to consolation win

Morne van Wyk’s maiden international century set up a 69-run win for South Africa to deny West Indies a series whitewash

The Report by Firdose Moonda14-Jan-20151:26

Morne van Wyk strikes maiden T20I ton in South Africa win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHe is neither South Africa’s first-choice limited-overs wicketkeeper batsmen nor their second so it was only fitting that Morne van Wyk, third in the queue behind Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers and overlooked for the World Cup despite topping the ongoing one-day cup run charts, became their third T20 centurion.Minutes after an emotional celebration in which he ended up wiping tears from his eyes, van Wyk put team above self and clobbered South Africa to a total above 190 to ensure they did not squander their strong start.”If we lose the game, my runs will not have been enough,” van Wyk said at the innings break. Luckily for him, they were.South Africa stopped West Indies from completing a third successful chase and a series whitewash with an aggressive batting and assured bowling performance. Their task was made considerably less difficult by the unavailability of Chris Gayle, who was left nursing the back injury that kept him out of the Test series, but the hosts had niggles of their own which could have worked against them. David Miller left the middle order appearing even softer than usual, despite the earlier-than-planned return of JP Duminy, as he sat out with a back spasm but van Wyk ensured they did not have too much to do.He single-handedly set South Africa up for victory by starring in their third century opening stand in the format, taking advantage of a careless display early on in the field from West Indies and showing patience while being pegged back to propel them to a match-winning total at the end.Morne van Wyk celebrates his maiden T20 century•Gallo Images

It did not always look like it would be so well-scripted for South Africa. Sheldon Cottrell’s first two overs were strangling as he maintained a full length outside off and conceded just five runs but he lacked support. Carlos Brathwaite, who made his first appearance in the series, could not find his line and started down the leg side before over-compensating by offering too much width outside off. His confidence would not have been helped when Dwayne Smith put down a tough change at point after van Wyk got a leading edge. The opening batsmen was on 1 at the time.Brathwaite had a second chance dropped when Reeza Hendricks offered Smith a much easier catch from the other end. Hendricks enjoyed more good fortune when he top-edged Brathwaite for six two balls later but then asserted himself over Ashley Nurse. The offspinner persisted with short balls even as he saw them dispatched by both Hendricks and van Wyk, who brought up 62 in the Powerplay and 86 by the end of the eighth over.Taking pace off the ball was the right strategy though, as Bravo showed with slower balls and cutters. Between him and Marlon Samuels, only 22 runs came off the next four overs and Kieron Pollard cashed in on that squeeze. Hendricks holed out and South Africa promoted David Wiese to No. 3 to get big runs in a big way.But van Wyk did that with more confidence, perhaps because he had assessed the pitch properly and waited for width or the wrong length to find the boundary. Wiese was yorked by Bravo at the end of the 18th over, with South Africa still well short of the 200 they seemed likely to get and it was up to van Wyk to get them there. He took 13 runs off Cottrell’s last over to get himself to 99.Bravo hit him on the hip with a beamer as the final over began but van Wyk scrambled the single he needed to reach his milestone off the next ball, the 67th he faced. The emotions did not overwhelm Duminy, who returned after two months on the sidelines with a straight six before van Wyk plundered two more. The 23 runs South Africa scored at the end gave them a defendable score, although Lendl Simmons did his best to change that.Batting in place of Gayle, Simmons did his best to imitate the Jamaican. He taught Marchant de Lange not to bowl even a fraction too short and handed Wayne Parnell the same lesson. Twenty-three runs came off Parnell’s opening over and West Indies were on track until spin was introduced. Smith may have been looking to target Aaron Phangiso but was bowled by a straight one and West Indies’ challenge all but ended there. They had fizzled out by the time Wiese got going with the ball. He understood the surface required a different skill set and had the ability to pull it off. He foxed Samuels with a cutter, had Simmons caught on the boundary, Bravo caught behind off a top-edge, Darren Sammy at backward point and Brathwaite in the deep. That made him the second South African to claim a five-for in the format after Ryan McLaren and ensured van Wyk ended up with a century that was more than enough.
