Rangers fans react as Gers pull out of Hastie chase

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to some transfer news, as the Gers have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Jake Hastie.

Plenty of Gers fans had their say when the club appeared poised to sign Hastie this summer, but it now looks like the move is completely off.

According to The Evening Times, The Ibrox outfit have pulled out of the running for the young winger, with MLS side Atlanta United and several English clubs lining up moves.

The Motherwell youngster is out of contract at the end of the campaign, meaning it is essentially a bidding war for his wages.

Of course, the Gers can’t compete with the riches on offer in England, so it is possible they have simply been priced out of a deal.

Either way, it seemed like a bizarre signing anyway, as the 20 year-old has played most of his football on the left-wing this season – the one position Steven Gerrard is completely stocked up.

Injury confirmed by Pulis: Van La Parra leaves Middlesbrough

[ad_pod ]

Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis has revealed that Rajiv van La Parra has been sent back to Huddersfield Town after failing to overcome a back problem.

The 27-year-old joined Boro on loan from Huddersfield during the January transfer window and was due to spend the remainder of the season at the Riverside Stadium.

The 5 ft 11 attacker only managed three Championship appearances for the club, though, and has now been sent back to his parent club.

Pulis has claimed that the former Netherlands Under-21 international arrived at his side with a back problem, which has not responded to treatment.

TeessideLive quotes Pulis as saying:

“Raj joined us with back problems which was documented by both clubs.

“Attempts to get Raj to the right levels of fitness proved unsuccessful and a scan at Middlesbrough highlighted the problem and so he’s been referred back to Huddersfield Town and we don’t think he’ll play this season.”

Boro’s 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City on Tuesday night led to more pressure on Pulis.

Indeed, a run of five straight losses has seen the team drop out of the playoff positions ahead of this weekend’s trip to Swansea City.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, have already been relegated back to the Championship for the 2019-2020 campaign.

Liverpool: Jordan Henderson deserves more appreciation

As Liverpool were close to experiencing a bitter case of déjà vu, an unlikely hero rose up to save them against Southampton.

While Mohamed Salah’s stunningly cool finish claimed most of the accolades, it was captain Jordan Henderson’s introduction which helped the Reds get out their predictable shell. Who’d have thought that a couple of years ago? Jordan Henderson coming on to change a game.

Indeed, it was Henderson and not James Milner who made the bigger impact and effectively helped them sail through a win. Not only did the skipper play the ball forward for Salah to score the winner, he embodied Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy by pegging his team forward to score another one.

When the Reds could’ve put men back to see out their result, Henderson urged his side to keep playing the Klopp’s heavy-metal style. In such resulted in a sweet goal, his first of the campaign.

It couldn’t have come at a better time.

He might not be as electric as Liverpool’s front-three, not as assertive as Virgil Van Dijk or as classy as some other midfielders, yet Henderson understands what it takes to succeed, protecting his side from danger and often using his surprising creativity to good use. Despite often being under the hammer it seems in terms of fan opinion, he’s risen up multiple times to inspire his side this season.

With a tackling success of 89%, having made 136 ball recoveries and averaging 52+ passes per game (stats via Premier League), he’s acted in the shadows to help them maintain dominance.

Henderson might not be a popular captain, but the way he’s led Liverpool into breaking the shackles of adversity is something to even make Steven Gerrard proud. Kenny Dalglish, the man who signed him for £20m back in 2011, claimed he was a ‘maintstay’ back in 2015 and, finally, it looks like that prediction is really coming true.

Yes, he’s played a lot of games since then and dons the infamous armband at Anfield but, right now, Henderson is making a top-level difference.

Arsenal: Unai Emery is finally learning from away game mistakes

It was a result that the club needed, and yet the day after its still amazing Arsenal actually managed to do it.

The Gunners 1-0 win away from home against Watford was a result not many Arsenal fans would have expected heading into the match, but in a game where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored one of the luckiest goals of the season and Troy Deeney only took 11 minutes to get sent off in, it was a performance that the club needed desperately.

Arsenal’s away form has been notable for all the wrong reasons this season, but last night’s display was a sign that Unai Emery has finally learnt from games of the past what to do in these types of matches, and this is something the club needs to improve on.

The win against Watford could be a turning point for the Gunners, who now have not only put themselves in a great position to finish in the top four but have now shown they have the quality and mentality to win away from home and keep a clean sheet.

Building on this result is the way forward for the club, who you could argue if Arsenal were able to win and keep clean sheets on the road they would be contenders for the Premier League title, and the Gunners can take their fortunes on the road to the next level if they can get something in Naples this Thursday.

Playing against Napoli in Italy is a big step up from playing at Vicarage Road, but if Arsenal can dig deep, they can get a landmark result over Carlo Ancelotti’s side and yet again take a big step forward in improving their away form.

Arsenal fans, how big was the result over Watford? Let us know!

Leeds fans hoping poor Easter Monday record can come to an end

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are praying that their poor run of results on Easter Monday can come to an end against Brentford.

The Whites’ promotion chances took a huge hit on Good Friday and they now sit two points off the pace in the race for the top two, with only three games left of the season.

A win on Easter Monday could potentially see their hopes resurrected but their recent record on this day shows that their chances of a win are unlikely.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have apparently lost nine of their last 10 league games on Easter Monday, and are currently on a run of six consecutive losses on this date.

If this poor run is extended, then Leeds’ push for automatic promotion could be all but over so it’s no surprise fans are hoping that the bad luck will end this time.

Wigan finally ended Leeds’ impressive winning streak after scoring first in Championship fixtures and fans of the Yorkshire club are now hoping that they can break another trend for the second time in just three days – albeit with significantly contrasting consequences for their promotion dream.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying about the record on Twitter…

Manchester United should move on from Pogba and cash in over the summer

Manchester United blew the chance to put the pressure on the top four as they drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford earlier today.

The Red Devils started well enough but yet another mistake from goalkeeper David De Gea allowed Marcos Alonso to knock in an equaliser and ensure a share of the spoils at Old Trafford.

There’s a clear need for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to sort plenty of issues out at the club in the summer, including issues around current players and those who he might look to bring into the club too.

And one man who we here in the Tavern feel should be moved on is Paul Pogba, who put in yet another lacklustre performance today and looks already like his focus is elsewhere.

Rumours this weekend are circling that Pogba could well be a target for Real Madrid and form club Juventus, who are keen to bring back the French midfielder after his successful spell with the Italian giants a few seasons ago.

Selling Pogba is a big decision for United to make, but there just seems to be a cloud hanging over both him and the club whenever he is involved.

His performances are constantly under the microscope, and despite getting in the PFA team of the season, he is yet to show the form for United that he has displayed for his country.

United have plenty of other issues within the squad in terms of quality, but getting rid of Pogba might be the best thing they can do, allowing Solskjaer and the club to move on from what has been a long drawn out saga ever since he arrived back at the club.

"Let’s be real" – Arsenal fans react to Sokratis comments

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Arsenal fans on Twitter have reacted negatively to patronising comments made by 6 ft 1 defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the wake of the Premier League drubbing at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night.

The crushing 3-1 loss dealt the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four a huge blow and was their third defeat in the space of four in the league.

Speaking to the North London club’s official website after the match, the 30-year-old articulated that he still thinks his team can win their final three games and finish in the top four, despite now being outside of it completely.

The North London Derby of 2008 may never be matched for drama. Lewis from Norwich City Central explains why it’s his all time favourite derby in the video below…

But supporters were in no mood to agree and took aim at the comments, frustrated that they’ve “heard that before” and claiming “talk is cheap” given the fact that the players seem to be able to say all the right things off the pitch but not apply them on it at the moment.

Below is a list of the pick of the replies from angry Gooners…

£15m move for Championship ace would allow Southampton to make major strides next season: Opinion

Southampton have managed to avoid the drop this season despite a miserable campaign on the whole which only picked up when Ralph Hasenhuttl arrived.

The new Saints boss has really managed to turn things round at St Mary’s, and he now sits ready for a big summer where he will be hoping to bring in plenty of new signings and see a big improvement in league position next term.

Hasenhuttl will have his eye on players already no doubt, and one man who he has indeed got his eye on is Birmingham City forward Che Adams, who has been in superb form this term for the Blues.

The Saints are linked with a £15m move for the former Sheffield United ace, who has really turned up the heat in the last 12 months and become one of the most sought after talents in the second tier.

Adams looks tailor made for the Premier League with his pace, power, and excellent finishing all attributes which make him an exciting prospect to clubs in the top flight.

Southampton are desperate for some new players who can hit the ground running and in Adams they would be getting someone who can bang in the goals and has a point to prove in terms of showing his worth at the top level of the game.

While Birmingham won’t want to lose their star man, Premier League money will often talk, and they won’t want to stand in the way of allowing Adams to go on and perform at the heighest level in the English game.

Pundit View: Davie Hay spot on with view on Gary Hooper’s potential Celtic return

[ad_pod ]

According to the Glasgow Evening Times, former Celtic player Davie Hay remains unconvinced about Neil Lennon’s reported plan to bring Gary Hooper back to Parkhead this summer, and he’s got a point.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Scottish Sun said earlier this week that the Northern Irishman is keen to bring the free agent back north of the border following his release by Sheffield Wednesday – as long as he is handed the job on a permanent basis.

Should the 31-year-old don the hoops for the second time in his career, he would likely be competing with the likes of Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard for a spot in the starting XI.

Hay doesn’t believe it would be a good move however, writing in the Glasgow Evening Times:

“I am not sure about the notion of Celtic looking to bring back Gary Hooper up front, if reports about Neil Lennon having an interest in the striker are true.

“Now, don’t get me wrong, he did really well for Celtic first time around and he was a prolific scorer for that team, but I think it might be a step backwards.

“The top of the park is an area that Celtic definitely have to strengthen in the window, but whoever they do bring in over the summer, I would like to think they would be able to attract a better quality of player.”

Is he right?

He certainly is.

The 71-year-old knows this is a crucial summer for the Bhoys in terms of getting their managerial appointment and player recruitment right, with a number of loanees and out-of-contract players looking set for the exit door.

Even if Lennon does get the job, Hooper is not the calibre of player the Scottish Premiership champions should be looking to sign.

Controversial. Uncompromising. Leader. C’mon the Hoops’ Keith talks the future of Celtic’s evergreen captain Scott Brown in the video below…

He is ageing, has struggled with injury and has just been let go by an English Championship club.

Celtic need to show ambition if they are to continue to hold off the challenge of Rangers and get back to where they once were in the Champions League, and Hooper isn’t the man to help them do that.

Over to you, Mr Lawwell.

That’s not fair! Liverpool fans aren’t happy with Man City’s possible CL ban

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter in panicked mood, after it was revealed that Manchester City could face a one-year ban from Champions League action.

The Citizens are alleged to have breached Financial Fair Play regulations by inflating the value of a multi-million pound sponsorship deal; the club has already been fined £49m in the past for previously breaching regulations.

City denied doing anything out of line, and UEFA revealed they could not comment on an ongoing investigation, although it is now being reported that investigators want the rules to be enforced which would see Pep Guardiola’s men banished from Europe for a season.

Given the fact that a mini-rivalry has grown between Liverpool and City due to their enticing battle for the Premier League title, you would expect the Reds fanbase to be happy with the news, and delighted that City are finally set to be punished.

However, a year out of Europe would allow Guardiola’s back-to-back title winners to solely focus on the league, which would spell bad news for a Liverpool side attempting to wrestle their crown away from them.

Let’s see what the fearful Liverpool supporters have been saying on Twitter about the situation…
