113 accurate passes: 10/10 Newcastle star is now as undroppable as Isak

Newcastle United responded to their demoralising 4-1 loss on the road to Aston Villa by easily getting the better of ten-man Ipswich Town 3-0 back at St James’ Park.

The Champions League aspiring side are now up to third in the Premier League standings off the back of this straightforward victory, with the result also finally sending the Tractor Boys back down to the Championship after they had been agonisingly waiting on.

Of course, Alexander Isak had to get in on the goalscoring action for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, with his penalty late into the first half getting the ball rolling for what was a comprehensive home victory.

Isak's performance in numbers

Isak is now up to a stunning 26 goals in all competitions, courtesy of his opener versus Kieran McKenna’s relegated visitors, but it was not the most impressive all-round showing from the Swede away from coolly converting his spot-kick.

Indeed, the forward would only manage to muster up 37 touches of the ball away from his decisive penalty beating Alex Palmer, with the ex-Real Sociedad man also managing to spurn two big chances to try and make Newcastle’s lead even more emphatic.

William Osula will be looking to keep Isak on his toes after finding the back of the net himself as a second-half substitute, but the 25-year-old’s starting spot is still very much set in stone, considering his blistering ability to fire home opportunities when he’s at his best.

There is another figure in Howe’s main XI who will also be confident that his spot is nailed on as secure, especially after his classy afternoon against Ipswich further cemented his worth to the Magpies’ cause.

The 10/10 ace who is now as undroppable as Isak

Minus that glaring blip at Villa Park, Newcastle have been a joy to watch in recent weeks if you’re of a Tyneside persuasion, with Howe’s men winning eight of their last nine games in all competitions away from the 4-1 loss to Unai Emery’s side.

Newcastle just seem to have a wonderful squad cohesion at the moment, with Dan Burn always putting in titan-like displays at the back, alongside Kieran Trippier chipping in with some crucial assists when the heat is ramped up.

The former Tottenham Hotspur full-back would of course play a huge role in the Magpies shocking Liverpool at Wembley in the EFL Cup final, with his corner kick delivery perfect for the head of Burn to convert during the 2-1 victory.

There was a sense of deja vu in the air at St James’ Park on Saturday as Trippier would tally up one of his assists on the day when picking out the reliable man mountain once more, alongside also teeing up Osula for his first-ever Premier League strike.

The ageing defender was constantly involved in Newcastle attacks when bombing down the right flank, with Trippier ending the contest with a mind-blowing 156 touches amassed, on top of 113 accurate passes being registered.

The Magpies number two isn’t any spring chicken at 34 years of age, but Howe will surely want to keep him around past this season despite his veteran status, particularly if he can conjure up more top-drawer showings like this one.

Unbelievably, football journalist Lee Ryder would hand out a faultless 10/10 match rating to Trippier after the dust had settled on the win, stating that his performance was massively ‘influential’, which is why he is now as undroppable as Isak.

Newcastle will just hope the assists keep flowing from Trippier when the Toon travel to a dangerous Brighton and Hove Albion side to kickstart May, knowing full well that more heroics to come from their loyal servant could see a Champions League place become a reality.

Nottingham Forest could now beat Inter and Bayern to "explosive" £25m star

Nottingham Forest have now been presented with an opportunity to beat Inter Milan and Bayern Munich to the signing of an “explosive” forward, but they will have to act quickly, according to a report.

Forest set to bolster attacking options

Despite the 2-1 loss away at Aston Villa last time out, Forest remain in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League next season, which means they should be able to compete for the signatures of some of Europe’s top forwards.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres is one of the most high-profile targets, and the Tricky Trees are now willing to offer winger Jota Silva as part of an exchange deal for the Sweden international, who is attracting widespread interest ahead of the summer window.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have also identified targets from within the Premier League, with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez of interest, having reportedly submitted a £50m bid for the Uruguayan striker, who looks set to leave the Reds.

Not only is Nuno keen to bring in a new striker, but the manager is also looking at signing a new winger, and a report from Italy has revealed Nottingham Forest have an opportunity to beat Bayern Munich and Inter Milan to the signature of Marseille’s Luis Henrique (via Sport Witness).

Inter are in contact over a deal for Henrique, but they are unwilling to match Marseille’s valuation, deeming a fee of €25m (£21m) to be fair, while the French club are looking to receive €30m – €35m (£26m – £30m)

Luis Henrique for Marseille.

As such, either Forest or Premier League rivals Newcastle United could move ahead in the race for the Brazilian, should they be willing to table a bid of at least £26m, but they will need to move swiftly, with Inter trying to get a deal done before the end of May.

"Explosive" Henrique could suit Nuno's system

Much of the Tricky Trees’ success this season can be put down to Nuno’s style of play, which relies on hitting their opponents with pace on the counter-attack, as confirmed by Anthony Elanga after the recent 1-0 victory against Manchester United.

“It is about attacking the space and getting to the opposite goal as quick as I can. I saw the space and I believe I’m one of the fastest players in the league.”

Elanga has been a key player for Forest this season, and there are clear signs Henrique would also be a perfect fit in Nuno’s system, having been lauded as “explosive” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who also praises the winger for his pace.

The 23-year-old’s attacking output has also been impressive this season, with seven goals and five assists to his name in Ligue 1, so Forest should do their utmost to ensure they win the race for his signature.

Free transfer: Man Utd eyeing move to sign "fantastic" ex-Newcastle player

Potentially replacing the struggling Andre Onana, Manchester United are now reportedly eyeing a bargain deal to sign a former Newcastle United shot-stopper for Ruben Amorim this summer.

Man Utd targeting Onana replacements

Whilst there was a brief spell at the start of the season that Onana looked to have put any problems in the past, mistakes have since crept back into his game under Amorim, who must replace his goalkeeper. The former Inter Milan man must be part of a ruthless clear-out at Old Trafford, with several names already linked with a summer switch to Manchester United to act as a replacement.

Onana has struggled ever since arriving last season and found himself at the centre of criticism from the likes of Gary Neville following some disappointing displays.

Development: Man Utd hold positive talks with "strong" £68m star over move

He’d be an instant upgrade.

Apr 5, 2025

The Manchester United legend slammed the goalkeeper after he made a mistake against Aston Villa last season, saying: “That was a pathetic passage of play. McGinn’s delivery was awful and then Onana makes a mess of it. Onana is getting on my nerves, slowing the game down and then keeps giving it away. Catch it and stay in your box!”

If recent reports are anything to go by too, Manchester United have seen enough. Recent rumours have even indicated that the Red Devils are interested in bringing David de Gea back to the club in what would be a sensational deal. Of course, it was Onana who initially came in to replace the Spaniard two seasons ago.

Fiorentina's DaviddeGea

Meanwhile, other names such as Mike Maignan have also threatened to steal the headlines. The AC Milan goalkeeper is arguably one of the best in his position and his reported price tag reflects that, sitting at an eye-watering £67m ahead of the summer.

Whether the Red Devils can afford such a deal is the big question. The reality is that they could be forced to turn their focus towards a bargain deal to replace Onana this summer.

Man Utd eyeing Freddie Woodman bargain

According to The Sun, Manchester United are now eyeing a bargain deal to sign Freddie Woodman from Preston North End this summer. The former Newcastle shot-stopper is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, which could allow those at Old Trafford to swoop in and land a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has been in excellent form in the Championship this season and may have done enough to earn a move back to the Premier League for the first time since leaving St James’ Park on a permanent deal in 2022. Having kept as many as 17 clean sheets in the current campaign, Woodman is far from the young goalkeeper who struggled to establish himself at Newcastle.

Freddie Woodman for Preston North End.

In recent years, Woodman has instead found himself at the centre of praise at Preston, including from Ryan Lowe. The former manager told reporters after the shot-stopper kept his 16th clean sheet of the 2022/23 campaign: “Freddie made some fantastic saves and that’s 16 clean sheets for him now, which is brilliant.

“He’s got a gashed eye and had three or four stitches at half-time, but there was no way we were going to get him off the pitch.”

Burnley look to see of Premier League clubs to sign "clever" rising star

Burnley are fighting for promotion to the Premier League and Scott Parker has wasted no time in profiling targets ahead of the summer window, per reports.

Burnley edge ahead of Championship title rivals

Following a chaotic afternoon of Championship action, Burnley emerged at the summit following a vital 2-1 victory over Coventry City on Saturday courtesy of a double from Jaidon Anthony.

Sheffield United’s unexpected slip-up at Oxford United and Leeds United’s dropped points on their visit to Luton Town have played into the Clarets’ hands, with promotion specialist Scott Parker licking his lips at the remaining fixture schedule.

Nevertheless, Burnley also have an eye on next season and potential recruits once the window opens for business. Per reports, out-of-contract Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence could move to Turf Moor on a free transfer.

Despite the Clarets’ appeal as a serious promotion candidate, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Coventry City and Wrexham are among other destinations on the table for the Wales international.

On the same token, West Brom star Grady Diangana is on Burnley’s radar and they have been urged to put forward a proposal for the versatile attacker by David Prutton.

Ultimately, any concrete information on high-profile targets will need to wait until the summer. Parker’s men are in a good position with the end of the campaign near, but there is plenty of work to do before celebratory champagne can be cracked open at Turf Moor.

Either way, Burnley are making tracks to lure a rising EFL star to Lancashire despite competition from Premier League clubs for his signature, per recent developments.

Burnley eyeing Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw

According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon via The 72, Burnley are eyeing a move to sign Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw alongside Premier League duo Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Born in 2006, the 18-year-old has made ten appearances for the Gas this campaign, while his loan spell at Yeovil Town earlier on yielded two goals and an assist.

Versatile by nature, the youngster is capable of playing across various roles in the engine room, on either flank or as a foil for the main striker.

Labelled “a clever player” by boss Inigo Calderon, he would likely be deemed as one for the future at Turf Moor, but stockpiling homegrown talent for years to come is a strategy that could save millions down the line if worked correctly.

It remains to be seen the sort of fee he would be available for if Burnley do follow up on their initial interest. One imagines he could be attainable for a relatively inexpensive fee, though only time will tell if a deal is to come to fruition.

Man City showing strong interest in £65m star who looks like the new Sane

Pep Guardiola remains coy, but the plain truth is that Manchester City have closed ground on Premier League table-toppers Arsenal ahead of the Christmas period, and Sky Blue supporters know they would be wise to buckle in.

But then, another truth would be that this is simply not Pep’s strongest City squad. That said, there is enough quality within the Etihad Stadium to challenge for and potentially win the league title, especially with Erling Haaland in such impudent goalscoring form.

However, Haaland can’t do it alone all year long, with the list of the club’s top scorers underscoring the need for more firepower.

Phil Foden is going from strength to strength, and that could be a defining factor in City’s revival, but it’s understandable that Guardiola and the board are hoping to sign a new wide forward.

City's winter transfer plans

Haaland continues to defy expectations. Even his soaring expectations. But there’s no question that Guardiola’s side could pack a few more angles into their punches, and that’s something that may need to be fixed in January if the Premier League title is to return to the blue side of Manchester.

Given that the Norwegian goal machine is fixed into his starting berth at number nine, perhaps a goalscoring wideman could be what Pep needs.

According to TEAMtalk, Man City still have a strong interest in signing Antoine Semenyo despite Liverpool’s ostensible lead in the race. All the pointers suggest the 26-year-old is inching toward an exit from Bournemouth in 2026.

Semenyo has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season, and with his £65m release clause switching on in January, City will need to pounce quickly to beat off the thick competition for his signature.

Why Pep wants to sign Semenyo

Most of the noise surrounding Semenyo and his future centres around struggling Premier League champions Liverpool, but City know they have it in their power to convince him to join their project.

A big-game player and with six goals and three assists to his name in the English top flight this term, Semenyo is riding the crest of a wave, with a skillset that looks perfect for a team fighting at the top.

His potency and pace could lead him to rival Jeremy Doku as City’s new version of Leroy Sane, who is fondly remembered to this day for his exploits in Manchester.

But, more accurately, Semenyo could actually emerge as Pep’s own version of Sadio Mane, the former Liverpool attacker.

Liverpool analyst Josh Williams has actually suggested that the Ghana international is “the closest you’ll find to peak Mane right now” , and given the terrorising of Premier League defences – including City’s – that the Senegalese winger used to inflict, Pep could do a lot worse than add a new version to his ranks.

Looking at the former Liverpool man during the 2021/22 campaign, leading to a second-place finish at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, in comparison to Semenyo this season, you can perhaps see why such a claim was made, with the Cherries star boasting a completeness that few can claim they have within their locker.

Both players are combative and dynamic and deadly in the final third, and while Semenyo has the pace and athleticism to rekindle memories of a star like Sane, it is the one-time Liverpool icon, who he bears a more striking tactical likeness.

Two-footed and able to play across both wings, Semenyo is the real deal, and though Bournemouth are struggling for form at this moment in time, he remains a beaming beacon for Andoni Iraola in the final third, having been named the “best winger in the country” by Chris Waddle for his efforts this season.

How City could do with a fleet-footed winger in their mix like Sane right now, someone to contrast with the electric Jeremy Doku.

Semenyo, with all his hustle and bustle, could be the perfect man for the title-chasing task at hand.

Carragher said Man Utd star was "terrible", now he's Amorim's key player

Manchester United’s spell under Ruben Amorim has been largely unsuccessful, with the 40-year-old’s job even coming into question before his one-year anniversary in the role.

From 15th-placed Premier League finishes to Carabao Cup exits against League Two opposition, his tenure at Old Trafford has been far from what many supporters expected.

However, over the last couple of weeks, the 40-year-old has finally started to show glimpses of being a success in the role in the immediate and long-term future.

His men have now won three league games in a row, with Saturday’s match against Nottingham Forest presenting the manager with the chance to extend such a run.

Some of the recent success has been down to the impact of the new summer additions, but also the transformation of numerous players already on the books prior to his appointment.

Man Utd players who have had a resurgence under Amorim

Amad Diallo was a player with a huge future at United after they forked out a reported £36m for his signature back in January 2021, but the early days of his stint in England were limited to say the least.

He was often utilised as a bench player under the guidance of former manager Erik ten Hag, but Amorim’s arrival sparked a newfound sense of belief in the Ivorian.

Since the manager’s arrival, the 23-year-old has operated in an unnatural wing-back role, but it’s allowed for consistent first-team minutes and a total of 20 combined goals and assists in his last 52 outings.

He’s not alone in turning his career at Old Trafford around, with centre-back Matthijs de Ligt often struggling to make the immediate impact many hoped for after his switch from Bayern Munich last summer.

The Dutch international was often called into question for his lack of defensive dominance, but he’s been a key component of Amorim’s side this campaign – subsequently playing every minute in the Premier League to date.

He’s made 1.7 tackles per 90 so far this campaign, along with 3.1 aerial duels won, tallies which have provided the side with the steel they were missing at the back last campaign.

Other players such as Luke Shaw and Mason Mount have also been regular starters throughout the early days of the season – potentially a surprise after being hounded by fans in 2024/25.

Such situations highlight the manager’s individual management with the players at his disposal, which has allowed for the Red Devils to endure a somewhat unfamiliar winning feeling as of late.

The United player who’s becoming one of their best in 2025/26

When you think of some of United’s best players in the current campaign, the imagination no doubt goes directly towards the £200m attacking trio who arrived this summer.

Bryan Mbeumo is just one of the attacking stars who has made an immediate impact at Old Trafford, as seen by his tally of five goals in his first ten outings for the club.

Bruno Fernandes is no doubt another that springs to mind, and understandably so, especially after the club captain registered 37 combined goals and assists last season.

However, the Portuguese international has since dropped into a deeper role, subsequently allowing the likes of Mbeumo to operate in the number ten role in the 3-4-2-1 system.

As a result, Amorim has had to find a dominant ball-winner to operate alongside Bruno, with the 40-year-old decided to utilise the experienced Casemiro in such a role.

The 33-year-old joined in a £60m deal from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2022, with real hope of handing the Red Devils the top-level star they craved in the middle of the park.

However, his stint in England has been largely topsy-turvy, with his disciplinary record of four red cards often holding him back from being a reliable option.

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher even called the Brazilian “terrible” back in September 2023 – before his infamous ‘leave the football’ quotes in May 2024 – with many expecting the player to depart the Theatre of Dreams during the recent window.

Despite such criticism, Casemiro has managed to transform his career in the Premier League, now appearing in all but one league outing of the 2025/26 campaign.

Whilst working out of possession is largely his responsibility, he’s managed to star with the ball at his feet – scoring twice and notching one assist in his eight appearances.

He’s also managed to make 3.1 tackles and 5.3 ball recoveries per 90 – highlighting his defensive talent, which has so often been called into question in recent years.

Other tallies, such as 60% duels won and 1.6 aerials won per 9,0 further showcase his dominant ability – making him the perfect partner alongside Bruno at present.

Casemiro deserves huge credit for his recent revival under Amorim, subsequently going from a certain exit to now being one of the club’s most important players.

The duo’s partnership at the heart of the side could allow for a successful 2025/26 campaign and kickstart the manager’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Deion Sanders Heaps Praise on Shohei Ohtani After NLCS Game 4 Performance

In Oct. 1992, Deion Sanders had an iron grip on the sports world. That month, the Braves outfielder played eight games in the National League Championship Series and World Series while also playing two games at cornerback for the Falcons.

This is to say: the Colorado football coach knows Major League Baseball playoff uniqueness when he sees it—and he sees it in Dodgers designated hitter and pitcher Shohei Ohtani, who delivered one of the great sports feats of this century in Game 4 of the NLCS Friday.

“I’ve seen some wonderful things that have transpired in sports. It’s hard for me to say (it's the greatest performance ever in any sport), but that is unbelievable," Sanders said via Pat Graham of the AP. “He’s doing something that’s unfathomable.”

In Los Angeles's 5–1 win over the Brewers on Friday, Ohtani smashed three home runs while striking out 10 batters as a pitcher.

Sanders, for his part, slashed .400/.455/.500 with one run batted in in the '92 playoffs, while adding a reception and five decent kick returns on the gridiron that month (no matter: he'd finish the year as an All-Pro anyway).

“Can they just hand (Ohtani) the MVP during the game?" Sanders asked, echoing many viewers Friday. The fourth for the future Hall of Famer doesn't seem far away.

Unstoppable and unsatisfied: how Punjab Kings marched into their first IPL playoffs in 11 years

The perennial underachievers have transformed themselves into serious contenders. They’ve stormed into the knockouts and are hungry for more

“This is the new Punjab”

” ball boundary “Two months have passed since Shreyas Iyer instructed his batting partner, Shashank Singh, to forget about Iyer’s approaching hundred and hit every ball for a boundary. It was towards the end of Punjab Kings’ first innings in their opening game of this year’s IPL, against Gujarat Titans.Shashank seems amazed even now as he narrates it. When Mohammed Siraj started the final over, Iyer was the non-striker, three runs short of his maiden IPL century. Shashank hit a first-ball four. The next ball, full-ish on his legs, he chipped towards midwicket and took off for what he thought was a single, until Iyer, leading Kings for the first time, screamed for a two.”It was a risky two but an easy one,” Shashank says. “Most players, non-strikers, would have opted for the easy one and [especially when] someone is playing on 97. IPL hundreds are not easy.Related

“Shreyas pushed me for two. He was like, “.” [Run, run, run for two.] If you see the video, while turning back for the second, I double-check on the scoreboard – if this guy is on 97, right!?”Iyer did not face a delivery that over, off which Shashank smacked 23 runs. Punjab won by 11 runs. The captain had set an example for Shashank and the rest of the Punjab squad, not just with the match-winning knock but his sense of team goals that would be inspirational for the side, who made the IPL playoffs for the first time in 11 years, and last Monday sealed a top-two position.”Shreyas was so selfless,” Shashank says. “He is the one who keeps the team always, always, always as a priority. That was [an example of something that] changed our vision toward the team, that this is a team sport and it is always above any individual.”Ricky Ponting, Punjab’s head coach, has known and backed Iyer from since when they worked together at Delhi Capitals in the same roles. Ponting was clear that for “Project Punjab” to succeed, he needed a like-minded captain, and Iyer fit right in.We own the night: Iyer’s brigade huddle before the Kolkata game against KKR•Saikat Das/BCCIThe significance for Ponting of Iyer’s on-field statement of intent in Ahmedabad was that Punjab had set the tone for the rest of the tournament in their opening match. Shashank’s last-over fireworks took them to 243, the highest IPL total recorded in Ahmedabad. “When you have some sort of vision in place and things sort of work out for you immediately in the first game, you know that the stuff that you’ve been talking about is making an impact on the boys,” Ponting says. “And you see that [in] the way we played that game, that dynamic, that daring stuff, was all there. So when you are trying to make things different and create change, you need your leaders and your most experienced guys to be the first ones that buy in and sort of set the tone and set the standard.”Ponting made notes about the small but significant positives through the season. One of those was how they won their fourth match, at their home venue, Mullanpur, against Chennai Super Kings after losing the previous game there against Rajasthan Royals. The uncapped fab four
Ponting singles out 23-year-old left-hand opening batter Priyansh Arya’s contribution in the win against CSK. Based on the auction picks it was believed Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis would be Prabhsimran Singh’s opening partner, but Iyer, it is learned, wanted Arya to open after he saw him bat in the nets, though it was the young batter’s first IPL.Against Royals, Arya was bowled first ball of the innings by Jofra Archer. But against CSK he brought up his first IPL hundred. Ponting says: “The fact that he was able to come out [in the CSK game] and hit his first ball over point for six off Khaleel Ahmed meant to me that what we were talking about, the things that we wanted to implement, that fearless or never-say-die attitude that I want to bring in and instil [in] all the players – for a young guy to be able to do that and then go on and play one of the best innings in the tournament so far, with a hundred in his fourth IPL game, that little moment there said to me that we’ve got a group here that are listening, that are willing to play a certain way for the team.”Punjab, and Titans, have raised 200-plus scores in seven games each this season, a record. While Titans’ top order has been the backbone of their batting success, for Punjab it has been their Indian batters who have shone, especially the uncapped four, Prabhsimran, Arya, Shashank and Nehal Wadhera. And Iyer too, of course. The success of the four younger batters has made Punjab the first team in IPL history for whom four uncapped batters have scored over 250 runs in a season.Prabhsimran and Shashank credit Ponting and Iyer with instilling belief in them well before the IPL started. Ahead of the player retention deadline, last October, Prabhsimran got a call from Ponting, who told him of the high regard he had had for him ever since Prabhsimran scored his first IPL century, against Delhi Capitals in 2023, when Ponting was Capitals coach. “He told me, ‘I can make you a better player if Punjab can retain you,'” Prabhsimran says.ESPNcricinfo LtdThat was an exciting prospect for Prabhsimran, who had been retained by Punjab ahead of the 2022 mega auction after he joined the franchise in 2019. While he played half a dozen matches between 2019 and 2022, starting in 2023 he has played the full season for PBKS. He aggregated 358 and 334 runs at an overall strike rate of 153.4 in 2023 and 2024 – decent figures, but not world-beating ones.Ponting is great at selling youngsters to themselves, making them believe in their potential. He told Prabhsimaran he could end up in the race for the orange cap. Though the young batter struggled for fluency in his last league match this season, against Mumbai Indians, he is already on 499 runs after 14 matches, which includes four half-centuries, all at a strike rate of 165.7. He still has two, if not three, games left this season. Ponting has been something of a prophet, like often in the past.”Ricky sir told me that you are now among the senior players and we are backing you and our only hope is you convert the starts you get,” Prabhsimran says. “I got four fifties, and after each one, when I went and spoke to him, he would remind me not to be satisfied with thirties and forties and focus on making a match-winning 75, 80 or 100. ‘Even if you get a century, see how you can add another 20 or more.’ Such things affected me positively.”In the rain-hit no-result against Kolkata Knight Riders, Prabhsimran and Arya smashed 83 and 69 respectively, becoming the first uncapped pair to score a 100-run partnership in IPL.For Ponting the Punjab Kings group as a whole have understood that it is important to get routines and processes right for results to start falling into place. “We don’t talk about winning, usually,” Prabhsimran says. “We don’t bring the ifs into our approach. ‘If this happens, if that happens’ – we don’t focus on that. We focus on our roles. The biggest change this time is, the culture and atmosphere is different. There is no negativity. No one is talking about whether [they are] not getting any opportunity. Everyone is ready. Those who are not playing, they too are supporting those who are. That contributed to the positive vibe.”The writing is on the wall: Ricky Ponting has been a man on a mission with PBKS this year•Arjun Singh/BCCICaptaincy, Iyer-style
In March, in two intra-squad matches, Shashank barely made any runs. He was frustrated and desperate. Iyer and Ponting, recognised his disappointment and intervened.”Shreyas messaged me [and said]: ‘Are you okay?’ I said, yeah, yeah, all okay. He said, ‘You’re not okay [but I want to tell you] you are playing all 14 games. You are the best finisher in this league and obviously I trust you, Ricky trusts you, and the team trusts you. So don’t worry.” The next morning, Ricky sir meets me at breakfast. He said, ‘All okay, bro? You’re the best player that’s in this team. You know it, right? You really are. That is why we retained you. So make sure that you are in a good zone. When you are in a good zone, the team will be in a good zone.'” Unshackled from insecurity, Shashank has played with freedom and been Punjab’s best finisher, scoring 162 runs at a strike rate of 197 in the death overs, with just one dismissal. This IPL, Iyer has combined instinct and strategy to take decisions in pressure situations that have shown his growth as a bowling captain. Former Australia medium-pace bowler James Hopes, Ponting’s right-hand man as PBKS assistant coach, talks about the win over Super Kings in Chennai at the end of April.”At the [second strategic] time out [Iyer] was just going to finish with the quicks,” Hopes says. “It was a gut-feel decision to bowl the legspinner [Yuzvendra Chahal] because he just saw a little opening with a match-up and took it. He’s pretty well planned in that aspect. He comes across as laid-back and a bit fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, but he very rarely bowls a guy when the [advantage] is not there for him.” Chahal got rid of MS Dhoni with his third ball to him, and then cleaned up the tail with a hat-trick, keeping them to 190.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe demands of captaincy, and at a new franchise at that, have not cramped Iyer’s batting. Not only is he Punjab’s leading run-scorer, he has the second-highest post-powerplay strike rate among batters who have made at least 250 runs this season.Ponting says Iyer’s commitment to his leadership task has been admirable. In the win against Royals in Jaipur, Iyer batted and then subbed himself out because of a sore finger on his right hand. Chasing 220, Royals were 89 for 1 after the powerplay. Ponting said to Iyer: “Mate, the whole body language of the field is down. We’ve got to do something about it.”Iyer put on a green vest – which those in the dugout need to wear when moving about the perimeter of the field during a game – and circled the ground, talking to his players, directing fielding positions, and talking to Shashank about bowling changes.”It would’ve been easy for him to sit back and just accept what happened in the game,” Ponting says, “but he wasn’t going to let that happen. He was going to get out there and make sure that he did everything that he could to give us the best chance of winning.”Arshdeep Singh: entertainer, bowling captain, match-winner
If Hopes is Ponting’s right hand, Arshdeep is the same for Hopes. The fast bowler has been Punjab’s bowling captain, not just taking wickets but also playing a central role in planning, strategy and in helping Iyer on field.Against Lucknow Super Giants in Dharamsala, Punjab’s second home base, after PBKS made 236, Arshdeep struck early and hard, removing LSG’s best batters inside five overs. Punjab had planned to target the dangerous Nicholas Pooran from around the wicket. Arshdeep executed perfectly, angling a full delivery into Pooran’s legs to nail him lbw. Arshdeep finished with 3 for 16, his best figures so far this season.Laugh like you’ve scored 1437: openers Arya (first from left) and Prabhsimran (first from right) have between them and their captain, Iyer, put on a little shy of 1500 runs so far in 2025•Punjab KingsHe suffered a rude jolt in the game against RR last week, where Yashasvi Jaiswal blasted 22 runs off the first over of the chase and Arshdeep went wicketless and leaked 60 runs, 38 of which came off his first two overs. Looking at that match, Hopes highlights how Arshdeep bounced back while giving away only eight runs in the 19th over, when Royals needed 30 off 12 balls, and eventually went on to lose by ten runs.”Speaking to him at the timeouts, I just said to him, ‘You’ve got 12 balls to make a difference in this game. What’s happened has happened.’ And just the maturity and the calmness that he showed at the end of that game to let what happened before go – he came back and executed the way that he can execute at the end, really shut that game down.”Arshdeep, who was bought back at the auction by Punjab using the right-to-match card for Rs 18 crore (US$2.14m approximately) has shown year-on-year growth and proved to be a key asset. Importantly, Hopes says he has developed a sense of flexibility about when he bowls. “He hasn’t always bowled first over, he hasn’t always bowled two in the powerplay. He’s bowled well for us in the middle. He’s bowled well for us at the end.”Arshdeep has also helped other bowlers both on and off the field. PBKS and South Africa bowling allrounder Marco Jansen, when asked about his partnership with Arshdeep flashes a smile.”He’s a funny guy,” Jansen says. “I can hear him a mile away. From out of nowhere [he’ll say] ‘Marco, ‘ and then I’ll just go, ‘Arsh, .'”I really enjoyed working with him and playing with him, especially because initially I thought he wasn’t going to be as open to sharing how different grounds play and how the different wickets react with the ball and what happens. [Arshdeep’s knowledge and inputs were] very, very helpful for me.”Jansen laughs that it has not been all one-way traffic. “If you ask him, he learns how to swing the ball from me as well, so it’s a give and take,” he says, before adding, “I’m joking.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”It is basically just bouncing questions or ideas off one another,” Jansen says. It’s also about keeping it simple. “So in the previous game [the win against Royals], for example, we were at the pool and I basically just asked Hopesy, what do you think we did wrong and what can we do in the next game? And it’s, like, easy answers: we were too full in that particular game. It’s like small chats, easy chats, not going too deep into detail or searching for things that are not there, trying to keep it as simple as possible and just basically do what we do best. Arsh basically swings the ball both ways and I just try and hit the wicket on a good length. If it swings, it swings. If it doesn’t swing, it doesn’t swing. And yeah, we’re just enjoying it at the moment.”Unlike Mumbai Indians, who have stuck to Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar to open the bowling for them so far this season, six bowlers have bowled the first over for Punjab; one of them is Arshdeep, who last year opened the bowling all through the season. This IPL, Punjab have played it by ear. They used that adaptability in their miraculous home win against reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders when they defended the smallest target in IPL history, 112. Jansen and Xavier Bartlett shared the first three overs in the powerplay and Arshdeep came in in the fourth.”We knew Marco had a really, really good match-up against [Sunil] Narine and we knew that Xavier Bartlett, the way he swings the ball, was a really good match-up against Quinnie de Kock – and the rest of them, to be honest. So we decided to be brave enough to do that and we got the results, and that was another example of Arshdeep just stepping up and doing his thing in a different role.”The Yuzi factor
Punjab have been among the most pace-heavy bowling teams this season. They have bowled only 72.5 overs of spin in the league phase, the second lowest this season. After five matches, Hopes pointed out that they needed to find a way to get their premier legspinner, Chahal, in if they wanted to win the IPL. Chahal did not get to finish his quota of overs in three of the first four matches, and that was becoming a point of concern, particularly considering he was the second most expensive buy at the auction for Punjab, who paid Rs 18 crore for him too.”We weren’t putting him in the game at the right time,” Hopes says. “Sometimes he was bowling an over that was like we were hoping for the best as opposed to [that] being when he should be bowling. That can sometimes happen when you’ve got one spinner. There were some left-handers out there, so [we] bowled [Glenn] Maxwell occasionally instead of him, which worked as well. But the game against KKR was when he just got a little bit of a sniff.” That was a game Ponting described as probably his best win as a coach in the IPL, and a “season-defining” one, coming as it did on the heels of PBKS having failed to defend 245 in their previous match, against Royals.Chahal bowled all four overs, scripting Punjab’s escape to victory with 4 for 28. “His first, one of his first two balls, I think, spun a little bit and then it was all over,” Hopes says. “You could tell straight away the way that this ball started to come out of his hand, and since then he’s just been normal Chahal.”Bowling spearhead Arshdeep got rid of both Lucknow Super Giants openers in the game in Dharamsala. He is currently joint fourth in the purple-cap rankings, with 18 wickets•BCCIChahal, who has been on the bench due to a niggle in his right wrist in the final two league matches, has been Punjab’s best bowler at Mullanpur, taking five wickets there. In the 14 wickets he has taken in 11 innings this season, he has two four-wicket hauls. All but one of those wickets have come in the middle or death overs.“Beautifully prepared” for the playoffs
After 2014, when they lost to Knight Riders in the final, this is the first time Punjab have finished on top of the leader board heading into the playoffs. On Thursday they face Royal Challengers at home. While Punjab will have two opportunities to make the final, their goal is clear: be there on the podium on June 3 to lift the trophy. From the first time he addressed the squad, Ponting was clear that it was about finishing among the top two on the points table. “So the fact that we have qualified, yes, that was a great landmark, a great achievement for the franchise because it’s been a long time, but we’re not happy with that,” he says. “We’re not satisfied with what we’ve done there. That’s just the start of it for us, that’s one part of the season done.”The playoffs are not another day at the office, Ponting says. “You can’t hide from the fact that it is a bigger game. I hear people all the time say, ‘It’s just another game.’ It’s not. There is more pressure. There’s more to the build-up of it.”But that doesn’t mean you need to play the game any differently. Internally we’ll play exactly the same way because we know when we’ve played our best cricket, it’s been as good as, if not better than, any other team in the tournament.”I’ve always been a big believer in the enormity of the situation brings the best out in players. You can’t fake it. You can’t try and get yourself up anymore. You can’t try any harder because I know my group of players here have been beautifully prepared. They’ve been ready for every situation that’s come up. And when we’ve been under pressure most, looking back through this tournament, is generally when this team’s played its best.”

Konstas wins the battle, Boland wins the match for Victoria

Boland took 5 for 67 and Murphy 3 for 17 to bowl Victoria to victory after Konstas’ 53 and Davies’ 64 had New South Wales on track in a thrilling fourth innings chase

Alex Malcolm17-Oct-2025Sam Konstas finally won a battle with Scott Boland but New South Wales lost the war against Victoria with the Test quick and spinner Todd Murphy combining to bowl their state to a thrilling victory at the Junction Oval inside three days.New South Wales were 184 for 5 needing just 71 to win before Boland took the last five wickets of the match, including Oliver Davies for 64 as he threatened to take the game away. Boland also gave Davies an uncharacteristic stare after knocking off his leg bail with a stunning delivery that jagged back through the gate. Earlier, Murphy took 3 for 17 in a game-changing spell, including bagging Konstas for a rollicking 53.New South Wales were left frustrated, falling short of chasing a fourth innings target of 255 on the back of a superb display from the bowlers to give them a chance of winning the game. They were also on the end of two controversial stumping decisions. The first was given against Matthew Gilkes as part of a collapse of 4 for 7 after they had reached 90 without loss in the chase. Gilkes played and missed at Fergus O’Neill with Victoria keeper Sam Harper up to the stumps. Harper held the ball near the bails and paused for a moment. Gilkes briefly moved his back foot behind the popping crease and Harper removed the balls during that time. The square leg umpire gave him out stumped in real time with no TV umpire available in Shield cricket. The second went against No.11 Ryan Hadley, who was visibly annoyed when given out caught in the gully after the umpire deemed he had got an inside edge onto his pad.Sam Konstas made 53•Getty Images

While Boland was the hero late for Victoria, Murphy had turned the game following a superb stand from Konstas and Blake Nikitaras. Konstas’ innings was a thrilling ride. He was almost bowled by Boland not offering a shot in the opening over. He reverse ramped the Test quick for six. He also charged O’Neill and lofted him over mid-off. He hooked Mitch Perry to fine leg but Murphy was too far in off the rope and it cleared him but landed well inside the boundary.Murphy exacted revenge though. After forcing Nikitaras to miscue to mid-on to break the opening stand, he picked up Konstas for the second time in his career. Konstas tried to cut a good length ball that spun and bounced more and he expected and chopped it onto his stumps. Murphy also removed Kurtis Patterson caught behind shortly after. It was a sequence the New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd bemoaned post-match. “That was a terrific partnership, a bit of punch, a bit of counter punch from both batters, but both got out in a disappointing fashion,” he said. “So that opened the door, and the door was then slammed shut on us.”[Konstas is a] baby cricketer in terms of experience as are a number of batters in the game on both sides. So there’s a lot of learning to be done. And he’s learned a couple of lessons today.”Incredibly, Murphy did not bowl another ball in the match after picking up Patterson in his eighth over. Victoria captain Will Sutherland opted for pace against the right-handed Davies who is a good player of spin.Davies looked set to win the game with a superb display of driving through the off side. He struck nine fours and a six before Boland snaked one through the gate. Boland then ripped through the lower-order, hitting the stumps twice more en route to his 10th five-wicket haul for Victoria.Three wickets apiece to Hadley and Liam Hatcher had given the Blues a reachable fourth innings target by combining to bowl out Victoria for just 177 in their second innings. After Hatcher and Hadley had claimed five wickets under gloomy skies on the second evening, Edwards struck twice in the morning session with Harper edging to slip and Sutherland nicking behind to leave Victoria struggling at 121 for 7. Mitchell Perry and O’Neill added valuable runs before Perry chopped Hadley on to hand the NSW quick his third scalp of the innings.O’Neill thrashed five boundaries in his brisk 25 before he was outfoxed by Nathan Lyon. O’Neill skipped down to try and launch the Test spinner over long-on but was beaten in flight and stumped by miles.Murphy was the last man out, adjudged lbw trying to reverse sweep a Lyon delivery that pitched on off stump. The victory propels Victoria to the top of the table with two wins from two matches.
