Everton fans on Brands claim

Some Everton fans have been left raging as a revelation emerged involving Marcel Brands.

Writing in a piece for The Athletic, Patrick Boyland and Greg O’Keefe have taken an in-depth look at the Director of Football and his time at Goodison Park so far.

They claim that he has never had a ‘free hand’ at the Merseyside club, as managers are picked by the owner, and multiple people feed in with transfers, not just Brands himself.

It seems a lot of Toffees supporters agreed with them, and took a dig at the board for not including him more in important decisions, in a period where the Blues have not finished higher than seventh spot in the Premier League table since the 2014/15 season, and have still not won a major trophy since the mid-90’s.

Southampton handed double injury boost

Southampton have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

What’s the latest?

In his latest press conference ahead of the match against the west Londoners, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed that Stuart Armstrong has returned to first team training but did not confirm whether or not the 29-year-old will be involved in the squad to face Chelsea.

Additionally, the Saints also have Theo Walcott back in training, who returned last week as he looks to get back to full fitness. The 32-year-old shared a post on his official Twitter profile earlier in the week which showed him smiling on the training pitch and accompanied by the caption: “It’s great to be back”.

Hasenhuttl will be thrilled

Given how Southampton have failed to score in any of their three previous league fixtures, Hasenhuttl will undoubtedly be thrilled to have some more attacking options at his disposal to try and switch things up as they seek to revive their goalscoring fortunes.

That is all the more pertinent considering how Armstrong and Walcott chipped in with a combined seven goals and eight assists between them in the Premier League last season.

However, with the Scot having only just returned to training and yet to make an appearance for the Saints so far this season, we feel it would probably be too early for the 29-year-old to be thrown into the mix from the start in the game against Chelsea, who have only conceded two goals in the league so far.

With Walcott, it could perhaps be the better option to restore him to the team given that he has some minutes under his belt this season and has been in training for longer than Armstrong, even though he hasn’t yet managed to score a goal or provide an assist for the Saints this term.

The 32-year-old has played more matches (25) against Chelsea than any other club throughout his career aside from Liverpool and has managed to rack up six goals and provide three assists against the Blues along the way. That could perhaps make him a viable option from the start against Thomas Tuchel’s side, if indeed he is deemed fit enough to play.

Brewster has a shocker as Blades lose again

Sheffield United’s diabolical start to the Championship season continued on Saturday as Slavisa Jokanovic saw his side succumb to yet another defeat at Bramall Lane.

While recovering from relegation from the Premier League is undoubtedly a challenging task, it would have been difficult to find a football fan – Sheffield United supporter or otherwise – who would have predicted the Blades would be languishing in the Championship relegation zone after picking up just a single point over their first four games of the season.

However, following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town, that is exactly where United find themselves, and it must have been a particularly difficult result to stomach for the Bramall Lane faithful.

Indeed, fans watched their side dominate the ball against the Terriers, boasting 70% of possession as well as taking 16 shots to the visitors’ six and completing 339 more passes than Carlos Corberan’s side, although it would be the visitors who left Sheffield with all three points.

The timing of Huddersfield’s winning goal must also have been particularly gut-wrenching, for after United had drawn the game level through Billy Sharp’s 92nd-minute strike which seemed to have secured at least a point for the hosts, Levi Colwill spoiled the party when he bagged the winner for Huddersfield in the 94th minute, leaving the Blades down and out on the canvas.

In terms of the United players, there were rather unsurprisingly a number of below-par performances, but it was Rhian Brewster’s particularly abject display which most caught the eye for all the wrong reasons.

Indeed, over his 65 minutes on the pitch, the 21-year-old managed just 14 touches of the ball, lost possession six times and completed just four passes. The £41k-per-week man also managed just one shot on target, completed none of his three attempted dribbles and won only one of his seven duels – a win percentage of just 14%.

These returns saw the former Liverpool centre-forward earn a SofaScore match rating of 6.4, with no Sheffield United player receiving a lower score than the England under-21 international in the fixture.

As such, while it would appear as if Jokanovic’s hopes of automatic promotion this season are already slim, Brewster will nevertheless have to significantly raise his game in the coming weeks and months if the Blades are to have any chance of making an assault on the top half of the table.

Wolves now unlikely to sign Renato Sanches

At the beginning of the day it looked as though Wolves were going to sign Renato Sanches on a loan deal.

However, deadline day has not gone as planned for Bruno Lage and co, with the Old Gold missing out on two targets now in the final hours.

What’s the word?

Wolves missed out on the acquisition of Sven Botman, with the Dutchman proving to be too expensive.

However, despite Sanches merely being a potential loan move, it looks like Lage won’t get that move done either.

The Molineux outfit had been pushing for the central midfielder in the concluding hours of the window but the two clubs haven’t been able to come to an agreement.

Tim Spiers revealed the bad news on Twitter, saying: “Not good news re Renato Sanches. Deal off as things stand, clubs too far apart on loan agreement (particularly the option next summer).”

The Athletic journalist did state there was a little margin of hope, adding: “Important to stress the ‘as things stand’ part of this tweet. Not off full stop, dialogue still open but plenty still to agree.”

Lage has hope

If Wolves can’t sign Sanches on the final day of the window, then it should be seen as a colossal blow.

The Old Gold haven’t been able to conclude much business this summer, but this was a deal which could have taken them to the next level.

He’s long been seen as one of the most promising central players in Europe and it would have been a considerable coup to bring him to Molineux. With a potential option to buy him as well, he could have been a phenomenal replacement for Ruben Neves if the latter did eventually leave next summer.

Neves has been linked with a move away for the vast majority of the transfer window and his absence would be felt hard if you judge him by his performance against Spurs over a week ago.

The two Portuguese players are competent when it comes to breaking down the play but are both calm and composed in possession the ball. Last term, for instance, they both completed more than 84% of their passes.

If you consider the lack of options Wolves have in that area of the pitch, it makes the need for Sanches even more greater.

After a quiet few months on the transfer front, this should leave the club’s supporters feeling rather dejected. It will also be a frustrating piece of news for Lage.

That being said, there is still a sliver of hope left with a few hours to go in the window. Negotiations are still ongoing and the deal isn’t definitely off. Will Wolves finally sign a new central midfielder? Time will tell.

Sky Sports reporter tells Tottenham to sell Davinson Sanchez

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told Football FanCast that Davinson Sanchez hasn’t progressed enough to warrant another season at Tottenham.

Signed by Mauricio Pochettino from Ajax in a £42m deal four years back; the Colombian centre-back was Spurs’ record-signing at the time.

An impressive first campaign followed as Tottenham secured a top four finish, with Sanchez getting his fare share of game time despite competing with two of the club’s best defenders in the Premier League era in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

However, whilst the 25-year-old has made almost 150 appearances in the Lilywhite of Tottenham, he’s failed to develop into the world class defender that his potential threatened.

Such is the his wretched form, he featured in just under half of Spurs’ Premier League games last season, with the last of those ending in true Sanchez fashion by conceding a penalty at Leicester on the final day.

And therefore, he’s been put on the transfer list along with several of his teammates. Asked which centre-back Tottenham should get rid of between Sanchez and Eric Dier, Bridge told Football FanCast:

“For me, taking my work hat away, it would be Davinson Sanchez. I just don’t see a big improvement coming from him there.”

Wolves transfer update on Otasowie

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged on Owen Otasowie.

As per Voetbalkrant, the central midfield player has attracted concrete interest from a whole host of clubs in Europe, including West Ham United, Everton, Ajax, Schalke and Club Brugge.

The news outlet claims that Otasowie would like to leave the Midlands club so that he can get more game time elsewhere.

However, the Molineux faithful are fairly scarce in his position at the moment, and have a pretty thin squad in general, and so letting Otasowie go at this minute in time would not seem like the wisest of ideas.

The USA international is only 20 years of age as well, and so still has a lot of potential which could be fulfilled under new manager Bruno Lage.

West Brom initiate Yokuslu transfer talks

West Bromwich Albion have opened talks regarding a deal to bring Okay Yokuslu back to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication AS, who claim that Celta de Vigo are desperate to sell the defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window in order to free up a chunk of their wage budget and, subsequently, make their own signings ahead of next season.

The report then goes on to state that, despite it previously being claimed otherwise, the 27-year-old would be open to a move to the Championship this summer, if it is one of his only available options in order to seal a return to England.

As a result, it is said that West Brom have initiated talks with the Turkey international regarding a switch back to the club, with the LaLiga side believed to be demanding a fee in the region of €5m (£4.3m) in order to sanction Yokuslu’s sale.

Finally, Watford are also mentioned as a club who are thought to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the midfielder, although their interest does not appear as concrete as Albion’s at present.

Imagine him & Mowatt

With Valerien Ismael currently being extremely short of central midfielders in his first-team squad, despite the fact that the Frenchman has brought in the former Barnsley Alex Mowatt this summer, the further addition of Yokuslu would certainly appear to be a fantastic piece of business for the Baggies to get over the line ahead of next season.

Indeed, over his 16 Premier League appearances while on loan at West Brom last season, the £6.75m-rated midfielder highly impressed, making an average of 2.2 interceptions, 2.4 tackles, two clearances and winning a rather remarkable 7.9 duels per game.

The 27-year-old also helped out in a creative capacity, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.4 key passes per match.

These returns saw the man Kyle Bartley claimed made a “big difference” to the West Brom side earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as the club’s fourth-best performer in the English top flight.

And, as mentioned previously, with Ismael having already secured the signing of Mowatt this summer – a player who scored eight goals, registered seven assists and created nine big chances over his 44 Championship appearances for Barnsley last season – the prospect of the 26-year-old partnering Yokuslu in the middle of the park next season should very much be a mouthwatering prospect for fans.

Celtic: Hoops keen on Liel Abada

Celtic are interested in signing Israel international Liel Abada, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Abada profiled

Abada is 19 years of age and is primarily a right winger. He can also play on the left or through the middle and has already made 76 senior appearances for current employers Maccabi Petah Tikva.

The youngster, who has one international cap to his name, has scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists at club level and is under contract until 2024.

Abada’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from £293,000 to £2.7m in just over a year, and it seems that Celtic are now keen on his services.

The Latest: Israeli sources share update

Israeli sources, relayed by The Scottish Sun, have claimed Celtic are interested in the 1.68m (5 foot 6) winger, along with clubs in Belgium, France and Greece.

Israeli agent Dudu Dahan has been given a mandate by Maccabi Petah Tikva to secure a transfer, with The Scottish Sun touting a £3.5m fee for Abada.

The teenager has left Israel to discuss a transfer with interested clubs, but it remains to be seen whether Celtic are one of those.

The Verdict: Wingers are needed

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is in need of some attacking additions to bolster his first team squad ahead of the new season.

He has just James Forrest, injury-plagued youngster Mikey Johnston and the returning Maryan Shved as senior wide options ahead of a Champions League qualifier later this month.

Dahan has helped Celtic to sign a number of players in recent years, including Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro, so should the Hoops firm up their interest, they could be in a good position to get a deal over the line for the in-demand Abada.
