Liverpool are interested in re-signing former Reds midfielder Gini Wijnaldum on loan this summer, according to a surprise transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Wijnaldum struggles after Anfield exit

The 31-year-old was a hugely influential figure at Anfield between 2016 and 2021, winning both the Champions League and Premier League during his time at the club and contributing to 38 goals in 237 appearances, notably being a reliable presence who constantly avoided any long-term injury.

Wijnaldum left to join Paris Saint-Germain last summer but his time in the French capital has been an undoubted disappointment, with Get French Football News even describing him as the Ligue 1 Flop Signing of the Year, claiming that he looked ‘lost’ at times.

With Liverpool arguably in need of a midfield addition this summer, a shock rumour is now doing the rounds.

According to The Irish Daily Star [via Liverpool Echo], there are ‘whispers’ that Liverpool want to bring Wijnaldum back on a temporary basis this summer, with the latter’s report describing it in their headline as a ‘shock loan move’.

It is seen a stop-gap solution ahead of a potential big-money signing of a midfielder next year, with Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham being one possible candidate.

This could be an ideal piece of business by Liverpool, seeing how it looks increasingly unlikely that they will be able to sign Bellingham this summer.

Wijnaldum may have struggled at PSG but that arguably has more to do with their use of him than anything else, with the Dutchman a system player who thrives under a manager who uses him correctly – such as Jurgen Klopp, who called him a ‘sensational’ player upon his departure from Anfield 13 months ago.

The midfielder would surely jump at the chance to make a short-term return to Liverpool, who signed him for £25m six years ago, and he remains a force who could add some much-needed extra depth in the middle of the park.

While the Reds have plenty of options in that area, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Naby Keita are all too capable of picking up injuries – something which rarely happened to Wijnaldum during his time on Merseyside.

Dean Jones has dropped an exciting Everton transfer update that could give supporters a much-needed boost.

What’s the news?

Jones was speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the club’s interest in Chelsea duo Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja:

“There’s no actual change since the end of the season, but they’re still interested,” said Jones.

“I think there’s, to be honest, a certain expectation that these players that were on loan last season won’t actually make the cut at Chelsea.

“Gallagher’s got the best chance, but we have to wait and see how much of an opportunity he actually gets in pre-season and whether he can convince [Thomas] Tuchel to stay in and around that squad, but Broja is more than likely to be on the market and available.”

Any move could cost the club a considerable amount of money with Gallagher believed to be rated at £50m and Broja at £57.8m.

Frank Lampard will love the news

Everton requires another striker and a player who can put a bit of bite back into the Everton midfield, with Broja and Gallagher fitting the bill perfectly.

Although by the sounds of it, Lampard might have to pursue other midfield options if Gallagher – who scored eight Premier League goals and registered five assists on loan at Crystal Palace last season – will be given a shot by Tuchel in pre-season.

Broja netted six league goals last season whilst on loan at Southampton, and at just 20 years old, he could fulfil his potential at Everton under Lampard, who has a penchant for developing young players.

One major stumbling block could be the fee, but they’d be helped by whether or not the club receives the £50m plus they are asking for Brazilian Richarlison this summer, as Tottenham remains interested.

£57.8m sounds excessive for a striker who has had a semi-decent season in the Premier League and Lampard could maybe use his Chelsea connections to arrange a potential loan move as he aims to redirect funds elsewhere.

Either way, he’d be delighted to bring him to Goodison Park over the summer.

It’s fair to say that Frank Lampard’s time at Everton so far has been one of strife, with the club narrowly avoiding relegation thanks to a stunning 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in their penultimate Premier League clash.

Lampard urgently needs to improve his attacking options, with Richarlison (11) being the club’s highest scorer this season.

There could be a solution however, with the club linked with New York City striker Valentin Castellanos, Lampard may have found a saviour to his attacking woes.

Ronny Deila hailed the Argentinian frontman as “top class” following a season in which he won the MLS golden boot with 22 goals, more than the other Everton strikers put together in the league.

Scoring goals isn’t his only strength either, as he provided eight assists during the MLS season as well as creating a further eight big chances for his teammates.

The player certainly looks like an upgrade on the £43k-per-week Rondon and despite the Venezuelan striker having another year left on his current contract, Lampard should be making a concrete effort to add Castellanos to his squad ahead of next season.

Fabio Paratici is closing in on a deal to bring Alessandro Bastoni to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), who claim that, following Ivan Perisic’s move from Inter Milan to Spurs, there is now a good chance the 23-year-old defender follows the Croatia international to north London.

Further reports also claim that the Tottenham sporting director has sent unmistakable signals of intent to the Serie A side regarding a £54m deal for the Italy international, while Alasdair Gold recently revealed that Spurs “believe that they’ll be able to sort out wages and the fee for Bastoni” in the coming weeks.
