Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes steel England after early drama

Pair put on unbroken stand of 126 for fourth wicket to guide hosts out of trouble on opening day

The Report by Valkerie Baynes16-Jul-2020It was slow, steady and sensible after England’s difficult start – on and off the field.Dom Sibley’s 86 not out, amid an unbroken 126-run stand for the fourth wicket with Ben Stokes, rescued his side from 81 for 3 and put them in a far more comfortable position at the close than appeared likely earlier in the first day of a must-win match for the hosts.ALSO READ: Archer dropped after breach of biosecurity protocolsIt was a day when the drama of Jofra Archer’s match-morning omission dominated the narrative, after the revelation that he had breached biosecurity protocols by stopping at his house in Brighton en route from Southampton to Manchester. But Sibley did the needful for England in the face of a West Indies bowling performance which stuttered, then contained the hosts before running into serious resistance as Sibley and Stokes saw their side to stumps still only three wickets down.It could have been so much worse for England when they lost Rory Burns, Zak Crawley and Joe Root cheaply.Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl first in hopes of making the most of gloomy overhead conditions when play finally began 90 minutes late due to the mop-up operation required to deal with a wet lead-up to the match. Both sides took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as they had done in Southampton, before play began.Holder played around with his attack in the hour of play to lunch, replacing Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach after just three overs each with himself and Alzarri Joseph. That was after Gabriel had looked uncomfortable in his run-up and out of rhythm. Roach, meanwhile, toiled hard for no reward once more.Gabriel – player of the match at the Ageas Bowl where his nine wickets, including a five-for in England’s second innings, helped West Indies to victory and a 1-0 series lead – returned with more control after the lunch break for another four-over spell. But he limped from the field with an apparent hamstring problem, returning in the evening session but without making any inroads in three more overs.Roach, who is only seven away from claiming 200 Test scalps, remains wicketless for the series despite bowling with accuracy for the most part.It was not until Holder brought offspinner Roston Chase on in the last over before lunch that West Indies made a breakthrough with Chase trapping Burns lbw with a ball that beat the inside edge and rapped him on the pads bang in line with middle stump. That signalled lunch but Chase struck with the next ball after lunch with one that spun a little as Crawley flicked low to Holder at leg slip. Crawley, whose second-innings 76 in Southampton cemented his place at the expense of Kent team-mate Joe Denly who made way for Root’s return from parental leave, was out for a first-ball duck.Root survived the hat-trick ball as he and Sibley built a 52-run partnership. But when Gabriel left the field Holder turned back to Joseph, who had accounted for three of Root’s previous four dismissals against West Indies going into the match. Joseph made it four in the last five with a full, outswinging delivery which Root swiped to Holder at slip. That left Sibley and Stokes in the middle and the pair set to work, Sibley keeping it low-key while Stokes produced the odd flash of strokeplay when it was warranted, including the first six of the series when he smacked Chase back down the ground.Sibley’s circumspection was familiar. After a duck in the first innings at the Ageas Bowl, he faced 164 deliveries in the second innings there before he was out moments after bringing up his fifty. This time, he stuck around upon reaching the milestone, grinding out his score off 253 deliveries so far.He was dropped on 68 when, in Gabriel’s first over since returning to the field, he sent a thick outside edge straight to Holder at second slip, only for the ball to slide through Holder’s hands, hit him in the stomach and fall to the ground.Roach was imploring when he reviewed a not-out decision for lbw which would have dismissed Sibley for 82 but, with the ball striking high on the front pad, the batsman survived on the umpire’s original call.Either Stokes, Sibley or both have been involved in each of the five highest partnerships of the series so far, all of them yielding in excess of 50 runs. Their union on Thursday took their team past England’s first-innings total at the Ageas Bowl of 204, which proved too low and was a factor in the hosts’ defeat there. If they are able to push on into the second day in Manchester, it will put less pressure on the England bowling attack, which has had an overhaul in the absence of Archer and the resting Mark Wood and James Anderson.Stuart Broad returned after being left out of the first Test and was joined by Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, with Stokes taking up the fourth seamer’s position. Their fresh legs could be key as England seek to thwart West Indies’ quest for a first Test series win in England for 32 years. But, after their batting performance in Southampton fell short, England will be happy to delay the appearance of their bowlers, regardless of who they are, a little longer.

Paratici struck gold on Spurs star who’s now worth 4x more than Zinchenko

It's been a Premier League season of mixed fortunes for Tottenham Hotspur this year, as despite starting the campaign with a genuinely impressive ten-game unbeaten streak, they are currently facing the prospect of a fifth defeat on the bounce.

However, with the sale of Harry Kane, a new manager in Ange Postecoglou, and still a real chance of qualifying for the Europa League, it would be fair to say that the Lilywhites have had more positives than negatives this year.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

For example, one of the club's breakout stars this season, Destiny Udogie, has seen his valuation balloon due to his brilliant performances and is currently worth substantially more than Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Destiny Udogie's career

Udogie began his senior career with Italian outfit Hellas Verona in the 2020/21 season before joining Udinese on loan the following season, a move that was made permanent in July 2022.

Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie.

However, just a month later, Spurs signed the young left-back for around £21m in what talent scout Jacek Kulig called a "masterclass signing" for Fabio Paratici and co, before letting him spend another campaign with the Serie A side to develop.

In his final campaign with Le Zebrette, the talented youngster scored three goals and provided four assists in 34 games, primarily playing as a left-sided midfielder but making one appearance on the left of the defence.

Destiny Udogie

Upon his arrival in England, fans weren't entirely sure what to expect, but it didn't take long for them to realise that the Lilywhites had a special player on their hands.

In December, former professional and popular pundit Micah Richards described the young Italian and his fellow full-back Pedro Porro as "excellent" and "outstanding" for their impressive attacking output and ability to help out in defence.

Unfortunately, the 21-year-old is set to miss the end of the campaign through a hamstring injury, but he could still end the season with an award.

He has been nominated for the Premier League's Young Player of the Year award, and with two goals and three assists to his name from 30 appearances in his debut season, it would be hard to argue that he doesn't deserve the nomination.

Overall, the youngster's first year in England has been brilliant, so it's not surprising that his valuation has soared, proving "one of Paratici's finer pieces of work" – in the words of journalist Dean Jones.

Destiny Udogie's valuation in 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Udogie is now worth €80m – £68m – making him the joint-most valuable player in Tottenham's entire squad and the joint-fifth most valuable in the entire Premier League.

It might seem like a lot of money for a player who has just completed his first campaign in the division, but the hefty valuation likely stems from several things: his age, his contract, which is set to run until June 2030, and his status as a player with sky-high potential.

All this also combines to make him a whopping four times more valuable than Arsenal left-back Zinchenko, whom the CIES price at €20m, which is around £17m, or £51m less than the Lilywhites star.

Now, it was only last season that the Ukrainian international was considered an integral part of the Gunners team that almost won the league, but a season on, he is clearly behind the likes of Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu in the pecking order, starting just 56% of Premier League games this term and only three of the last 12 games.

Moreover, the former Manchester City ace has a poor track record with injuries and has missed 28 games in the two seasons he's been in north London, which, as things stand, doesn't seem to be a problem with Tottenham's star left-back.

Tottenham star Destiny Udogie.

Ultimately, both Udogie and Zinchenko are capable left-backs and Premier League quality players, but the Ukrainian has had a bad 12 months, whereas the Italian is clearly on the up and up, so it would be fair to say the club played a blinder when they signed him two years ago.

Spurs struck gold on "special" ace who's as valuable as Trossard & White

Ten Hag must immediately drop Man Utd ace after 3/10 Coventry display

If Erik ten Hag was feeling the pressure before Manchester United’s FA Cup clash against Coventry City, then he must certainly be petrified about the status of his job after narrowly beating the Championship side on penalties.

The Red Devils didn’t just have one foot in the final in the 70th minute when they were 3-0 up; they had every limb, but in typical United fashion, everything had to be so complex.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Somehow, at the full-time whistle, the score line was 3-3, with terrible game management and a slice of unlucky nature helping Coventry back into the game.

Both teams could have progressed in extra time, and Coventry so nearly did if it wasn’t for a very tight offside call. Luckily, United were victorious in the shootout.

For context of just how poor the Premier League side were, if the world of football was unknown to a viewer, it would be easy to assume that Man United were the underdog going into the game, with one player in particular performing worse than Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford’s performance against Coventry

There’s no doubt about it: Rashford is an absolutely fantastic attacker on his day, but he’s the definition of a confidence player, and he’s lacked that this season in particular.

Once again, the number ten started in his usual left-wing role, but he found it difficult to have an impact on the game against the stubborn low block of Coventry.

In fairness to Rashford, his performance certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying today, but he was wasteful in possession, often running out of ideas and into closed corners.

The England international gave the ball away 17 times, had a pass accuracy of 84%, and spurned his only opportunity of the game, with Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst handing him a 5/10 rating, which was far from the worst.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s statistics against Coventry

Due to the sheer number of injuries that keep occurring to the United backline, Aaron Wan-Bissaka once again started at left-back for the Red Devils.

However, it was unfortunately a performance to completely forget about after being absorbed by the roar of the Coventry faithful.

Luckhurst was particularly adamant that the number 29 was one of the worst on the field, rating him an extremely low 3/10 and alluding to the fact that he was “targeted a number of times.”

Right up until the score was 3-1, Wan-Bissaka was having a relatively comfortable afternoon, but the arrival of Fabio Tavares just after the hour mark exposed the defender defensively.

As you can see by the stats, the former Crystal Palace player was calm and composed, even completing 100% of his dribbles, but as Mark Robins’ side grew into the game, Wan-Bissaka faded.

For the second goal, the 26-year-old failed to close down the ball quickly enough, as Callum O’Hare unleashed a strike that flew off the static Wan-Bissaka into the back of the net.

Then, 15 minutes later, amongst the chaos, the right-back conceded a late penalty due to handball after an unconvincing piece of defending at the back post.

Tackling and dealing with 1v1 scenarios is supposedly Wan-Bissaka’s biggest strength, but today he only made one tackle and won just five of his nine duels, which highlights that he was off the pace.

In truth, the English ace looked uncomfortable from the second Ellis Simms scored, displaying panic both on the ball and off it, and Ten Hag may reconsider his place in the starting lineup on Wednesday.

Goodison flop who made 0 Everton appearances is now outperforming DCL

Everton have been brilliant defensively under boss Sean Dyche, with the Toffees having the joint-best defensive record of any side outside the Premier League's top four – tied with Manchester United on 29 goals conceded.

The club have also kept the joint second-most clean sheets in the division, with Arsenal the only side in England's top flight to register more this season.

The Toffees' six-point deduction earlier this campaign, has seen the club linger around the Premier League's relegation zone, with the defensive record a huge boost in the club's battle to avoid the drop.

However, it's the Toffees' attack that has prevented them from pulling further clear of any danger, with Dyche's side only scoring 29 times in 28 games this campaign, with only bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United scoring fewer.

The club could've benefitted from a former player who they sold back in 2019, with the forward currently enjoying a brilliant goalscoring campaign.

Henry Onyekuru's stats at Everton

After finding the net 22 times for KAS Eupen in 2016/17, Everton forked out £7m on attacker Henry Onyekuru, with the Nigerian having huge potential to be a star after his breakthrough campaign aged just 20.

The club wanted him to gain consistent first-team minutes to continue his development, with the Toffees loaning the youngster out to Anderlecht for the 2017/18 season.

Onyekuru excelled once more, scoring ten goals in his 27 appearances away from Goodison, but his form wasn't enough to warrant a first-team place, with the winger leaving the club on loan once more.

He spent the next campaign at Turkish outfit Galatasaray, continuing his excellent form in front of goal – contributing with 16 goals as he helped the Istanbul outfit claim the Süper Lig title in 2018/19.

Despite scoring 26 times over his two loan spells away from the club, Everton failed to receive a work permit for Onyekuru, with the club deciding to sell the then 22-year-old to Monaco for £12m – leaving Goodison without making a single appearance.

Henry Onyekuru's stats in 2023/24

Four years on from his Everton departure, Onyekuru is now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, starring for Al-Fayha, who sit 8th in the Saudi Pro League.

He joined the Saudi side back in August 2023, with the 26-year-old impressing in his 24 league appearances this campaign.

His tally of ten goals this campaign, ranks him within the top ten goalscorers within the division – behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and former Newcastle United and Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Despite being a lower-quality division, the Nigerian attacker has outperformed current Toffees striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the 27-year-old scoring just three goals in the same number of appearances.

Calvert-Lewin has failed to hit the heights he's achieved in recent seasons, with the striker's xG of 5.29 expected goals in the Premier League reflecting that he's missed multiple big chances, scoring two goals less than he should have based on the opportunities he's had in front of goal.

Onyekuru has proven himself to be a consistent goalscorer wherever he's been. It's a real shame that he couldn't receive a work permit during his time at Goodison, with the Nigerian's goalscoring record being of use to Dyche's side given their lack of goals this campaign.

BCCI CFO Santosh Rangnekar quits abruptly

It is understood he was wary of working in the changed environment brought by the return of an elected administration

Nagraj Gollapudi08-Nov-2019A fortnight after Sourav Ganguly’s new BCCI administration took charge, the board’s chief financial officer has decided to quit. ESPNcricinfo understands Santosh Rangnekar, the second-most senior official on the BCCI’s management team, communicated his decision to step down to the board CEO Rahul Johri on Thursday.Ostensibly, Rangnekar is said to have wanted to move on professionally, but it is understood he was wary of working in the changed environment brought by the return of an elected administration. Rangnekar himself did not respond to ESPNcricinfo seeking comment on his decision. The development is abrupt in that until a few days ago, Rangnekar had been working closely with the new office-bearers, including Arun Dhumal, the BCCI treasurer and brother of former BCCI president Anurag Thakur. Not all the office-bearers are believed to have been aware of Rangnekar’s decision to quit.Only two weeks ago, on October 22, the Supreme Court of India had said that all the officials that had worked under the directives of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) were “immune” from any board action. The court is likely to keep an eye on the development considering that a key reform of the RM Lodha Committee was that the BCCI have a corporate structure with an independent management wing. However, no sooner had the CoA disbanded than the BCCI’s headquarters in Mumbai was frequented by several former senior office-bearers, some of whom stood disqualified to contest for any position.Rangnekar, it is believed, was already frustrated by the interference in the routine workings of the administration from subordinates, whom he suspected were being guided by people outside the BCCI.Rangnekar was appointed as the BCCI’s first CFO in June 2016 under Thakur’s administration. Both his appointment, and that of Johri, were a result of the BCCI adopting the Lodha Committee’s recommendation of separating the governance and management wings in the board. The appointment of both, the BCCI said at the time, was part of an initiative called ‘Project Transformation’ aimed at improving governance, and operational and financial processes. That project was initiated by former BCCI president Shashank Manohar. Both Johri and Rangnekar were given more powers in the daily running of the board by the CoA, which was appointed by the court in January 2017 as a supervisory authority. In November 2017, the court heard that Rangnekar had filed a complaint against then board treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, accusing him of issuing “death” threats while interfering with daily board affairs. Chaudhry said he was “shocked” by the complaint and suspected it had arisen because he had been asking tough questions about some aspects of the CoA’s decision-making.

Ibrox chiefs now have "number in mind" to sell Rangers star this summer

Top of the Scottish Premiership and finally in control of the title picture, Rangers should be perfectly placed to strengthen Philippe Clement's side this summer. Instead, however, Ibrox chiefs could reportedly sell one of the Gers' best players.

Rangers transfer news

Whilst the focus on the pitch has been all about the title race – and rightly so – Rangers are on course to lose a number of players at the end of the season. As things stand, Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic, John McLaughlin, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Leon Balogun are all set to depart. And although there is still plenty of hope surrounding a new deal for Lundstram, others still look likely to leave Ibrox at the end of the current campaign.

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

Those likely exits will leave Clement with quite the task in the summer when it comes to ensuring that his side compete for the Scottish Premiership once again in his first full season in charge. Reports suggest that the former AS Monaco boss could add least be boosted by the permanent arrival of Oscar Cortes, however, after the winger's impressive loan spell.

That said, the sale of key man Jack Butland has not been ruled out. According to Chris Jack of Rangers Review, Rangers have a "number in mind" to sell Butland this summer, despite their previous desperation to keep hold of the goalkeeper when clubs came calling January.

Clement can ease Cantwell blow by relocating "aggressive" Rangers gem

Rangers face another tricky league tie this evening as they travel to face Kilmarnock

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 28, 2024

Jack told Rangers Review: “He’s priceless for Rangers. As soon as the interest from Forest became evident early in the transfer window, I checked it out with the club and it was just a case of it’s just not happening. There was no way.

“Ultimately money talks. As impressive as he has been, and as integral to the squad as he has been, that doesn’t mean to say he’s going to be here forever. At some stage, Rangers will have a number in mind. No player is not for sale right now. If you can bring someone in on a Bosman and 12 months later let them go for £15-20million or so, that money can go a really long way.”

Rangers should keep "priceless" Butland

If Rangers manage to win the Scottish Premiership this season, then the last thing that they should be doing is dismantling Clement's squad. It is a title that they should build on if anything, rather than one they should use to take a step back. Butland is a more important part of that than ever too, given his recent form, meaning that the Gers should do everything in their power to keep hold of their shot-stopper.

Reports are now even indicating that the former Stoke City man is in contention to receive his first England call-up since September 2018.

When the summer transfer window arrives, Butland could once again be at the centre of interest, but it is interest that Rangers should once again stave off to keep hold of one of their star men.
