Sluggish South Africa lack innovation

South Africa’s much-vaunted bowling attack endured a tough opening day of the series that left them scratching their heads for inspiration

Firdose Moonda at The Oval19-Jul-2012Not since 2001 has Jacques Kallis been given the new ball for South Africa. Today, he was presented with the second one. As incongruous a sight as it was, it was an act that summed up the day for the visitors and emphasised their need to innovate as compensation for having their plans being pulled out of shape.Do not mistake that for confirmation of the suspicion that they were undercooked. South Africa did not come into the match underprepared. They were short of match time but long on tactics and research which initially paid off.Morne Morkel took the new ball for the first time in eight Tests, since Vernon Philander made his debut, solely because of his record against Andrew Strauss. He had dismissed Strauss six times before today and it took him only four balls to do it for a seventh time. Allan Donald confirmed that it was a strategy South Africa specifically prepared because Morkel “wanted to front up to Strauss. He knows that he has got a little bit of a psychological advantage over him.”By pairing Morkel with Philander, South Africa also avoided using Dale Steyn against the left-handed opening pair. Steyn’s average against southpaws is 31.50, considerably lower than his 18.94 against right-handers.What it did not do was stop South Africa from being exposed against left-handers. Donald had discussed with his attack ways of “suffocating the left-handers” but admitted that at times, their execution of those plans was not entirely correct.Even with the situation not entirely under control, the thinking was still evident. A short midwicket was put in place for Jonathan Trott, who has a habit of dragging balls from outside offstump to the leg-side. He does not have a habit of doing it rashly though, but South Africa were hopeful as Smith kept the close catcher in place. That was where the South African scheming erred. Trott bats in a bubble as dense as a diamond and the idea of being able to pierce that with mind games proved naïve. Instead, South Africa should have tried to remove him in the most literal way rather than through a complex and multi-layered strategy that involved frustrating Trott into getting himself out.It would have meant better use of the short ball, which South Africa stayed away from with alarming regularity. Morkel, the seamer with the most deadly bouncer of the pack, bowled his first at the end of his fourth over. By mid-way through the second session, South Africa had only bowled a little more than an over worth of short balls.

Tahir had developed a defensive side to his game before this match but abandoned it in the quest for wickets.

They allowed the batsmen to get on the front foot too often and to leave comfortably on too many occasions. Donald said they knew “width was not an option”. Still, they continued to bowl wide of offstump, making the opening pair’s powers of judgement appear precision perfect as they left with ease. By the time Cook had scored his half-century, he had left just under half the balls he had faced.Despite the dry, unresponsive surface which offered South Africa almost nothing, their attack also lacked the intensity and aggression that Allan Donald has been infusing in them since he took over.Steyn was battling with either a physical niggle or a bruised ego, although Donald was adamant it was not an injury which appeared to affect the way he bowled. On previous tours, and most recently in New Zealand, he unashamedly showed his annoyance when he did not see immediate success and glimpse of that emerged again today. During his first spell, he constantly and perhaps even desperately clutched the advertising boards in between overs, he had his ankle strapped later on in the day and conducted a publicly-viewable animated chat with Gary Kirsten in the changing room shortly before the second new ball was taken.Philander lacked dynamism. He plugged away with line and length and was able to keep the run-rate under control but the small bursts of magic he produced to capture his 51 Test wickets were missing. The subtle seam movements and nip was not there. Increasingly, he also grew frustrated and it showed when he flung the ball back to Cook a spell after the England centurion had driven him down the ground for four.Imran Tahir could not have been expected to produce much on a first-day flat deck but he did less than that with an assortment of full tosses and long hops that became free runs. Tahir had developed a defensive side to his game before this match but abandoned it in the quest for wickets. He got some turn which could be promising for later on in the match but did not result in too much today.Kallis and Morkel stood out as the most effective bowlers on the day, the former with late swing and the latter with the way he accepted greater responsibility. Kallis had to bowl more than his quota of overs, which has stood at between 10 and 12 a day in recent times.Morkel was the man that “stood up” as Donald put it. He grew in confidence as the day went on and was the only one actually deserving of wickets. For the rest, it was the day of tough Test cricket they needed to remind themselves of exactly what it will take it to dethrone the No. 1 ranked team in the world.”The only thing that really lacked was the moment that we could pounce,” Donald said. To succeed over the next 14 days in the series, they will have to create, not wait, for those moments.

Thrilling opener kick-starts tournament

Nothing sets a tournament up better than a tight finish

Andrew McGlashan in Guyana30-Apr-2010Nothing sets a tournament up better than a tight finish. Last year in England the World Twenty20 was sparked into life by Netherlands’ shock last-ball victory against the hosts and while New Zealand’s success over Sri Lanka at Providence can’t even be ranked as an upset it launched this latest event in suitably thrilling style. The match itself was a slow-burner on another sluggish pitch, but it always had the makings of a tight contest. It involved many changes of momentum, as the best Twenty20 matches always do, and nothing better encapsulated the shifts than the closing stages of New Zealand’s run chase. When Jacob Oram walked to the crease it was Sri Lanka’s game. Then Oram hit consecutive sixes off Ajantha Mendis, but to the first ball of the penultimate over he missed a wild heave at Chanaka Welegedara to leave the stumps splattered. At the non-striker’s end Daniel Vettori thumped his bat in frustration, but New Zealand had more left to give as Vettori found a crucial boundary and it came down to 10 off the last over.If any bowler in the world could defend that it would be Lasith Malinga – this, remember, was the ground where he took four wickets in four balls against South Africa during the 2007 World Cup – but this wasn’t a game for the two fastest operators on show. Shane Bond had been New Zealand’s most expensive bowler and Malinga lost the accuracy off his normally pinpoint yorkers as Nathan McCullum flicked a boundary to deep square-leg then launched him over long off to seal the victory.”We made it a bit harder than we should have,” Vettori admitted. “Jesse Ryder and Martin Guptil were fantastic but we probably lost our way in the middle stages by not being aggressive enough and trying to take some risks.”You always think you can chase that down, but then Malinga is on there and he’s very good at the death. He normally never misses and it was always going to be tough. Fortunately those two sixes by Jacob Oram and Nathan’s little cameo really got us through.”As Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, said there is no way Malinga should be blamed for the defeat but when a bowler of his speed is slightly off target it gives the batsmen vital extra pace to work with on a slow surface such as this. Still, you wouldn’t have put it past him to still secure the game for Sri Lanka when it came down to three from two balls following Vettori’s sacrificial run out. However McCullum – and not the one who normally launches sixes for New Zealand – knew the ball would be full and when it was a touch short of yorker length he freed his arms, clearing the boundary and let out something close to a primeval roar.I’ve been there a couple of times and a couple of times I’ve been on the other end of it,” McCullum said. “It’s good to finally get one to go the other way.”A fired-up Nathan McCullum took New Zealand home with a ball to spare•AFPAnd although he knew what to expect from Malinga, playing it was another matter entirely. “He’s very good at that and doesn’t often miss but luckily he missed one today and we were able to get it away, but he’s pretty good at what he does,” McCullum added. The match supported the predictions that this won’t be a ground for huge scores; both because of the surface and the large boundaries, but that doesn’t have to preclude compelling contests. What it does require is a slight adjustment in expectations, both from the players and supporters who have become attuned to Twenty20 being a boundary blitz. Sixes will be at a premium here, which is never a bad thing especially after six weeks of “DLF maximums.””I think we can cope with all conditions but the important thing is this is a really good sized ground which brings the bowlers a lot more into play,” Vettori said. “It allows myself and Nathan to be a bit more attacking. I really enjoy playing here, the nature of the wicket suits us but I hope we can adapt to anything.”The result leaves Sri Lanka, one of the pre-tournament favourites, facing a must-win match against Zimbabwe. The second game in this group is no longer a freebie after Zimbabwe’s impressive warm-up form with victories against Australia and Pakistan, but New Zealand are in a much more comfortable position.”It’s pretty big [this win] because otherwise the last game becomes do or die,” Vettori said. “Zimbabwe have shown their hand by beating Australia in the first warm-up game so are obviously competitive in this format and we can now go in knowing what we have to do. It’s a good feeling in the camp, although we know it’s still an important game.”

Irfan Pathan picks India's T20 World Cup squad

Irfan Pathan picks India’s T20 World Cup squad

The T20 World Cup begins just days after the IPL ends and presents another opportunity for India to end their ICC trophy drought. ESPNcricinfo’s Raunak Kapoor sat down with a man who played a key role in winning that title in 2007 to figure out who has a strong enough case to be on the flight to the West Indies and the USA and who still has work to do.India’s batting still revoles around Rohit Sharma, who will be captain, and Virat Kohli, who in this IPL, has shown that he has expanded his game and is willing to hit boundaries from the get-go. Pathan insists that Kohli is absolutely vital in a big tournament and debunks a few myths about his strike rate.0:55

Irfan on Kohli’s selection: There shouldn’t even be a question

The biggest bone of contention in the squad is who will be the wicketkeeper. Rishabh Pant is only just coming back from a life-threatening accident and multiple surgeries. Jitesh Sharma has shown lots of potential but doesn’t have the body of work yet in international cricket. Then there’s also KL Rahul who has the versatility to bat wherever he needs to.2:58

Irfan: Jitesh, Pant frontrunners for the wicketkeeper spot

Irfan also believes that any team with aspirations of winning a World Cup must have “a gun left-arm fast bowler” and throws his weight behind Uttar Pradesh and Lucknow Super Giants’ Mohsin Khan, even though he is yet to be capped at international level. Here are his reasons why.1:49

Shabnim Ismail, lauded as the quickest in the women’s game, has retired from international cricket. Ismail, whose 16-year career concluded with the home T20 World Cup in February, will continue to play in T20 competitions around the world.Despite being offered a national contract for the 2023/24 season and being announced by Cricket South Africa (CSA), Ismail did not accept and has chosen to end her South Africa career with immediate effect in order to prioritise her family. In a statement, issued by CSA, Ismail said she finds herself “wanting to spend more time with my family, particularly my siblings and parents as they get older. I really believe that reducing the amount of cricket I play will enable me to do this, and playing in global leagues is the only way I see to be able to fit in both family and cricket.”Ismail played for the UP Warriorz in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, has a deal with the Sapphires in the Fairbreak tournament, with the Welsh Fire for the Hundred (and has previously been part of the Oval Invincibles squad) and Melbourne Renegade in the WBBL.Related

Fast times with Shabnim Ismail

Her retirement comes at a time when the women’s game is seeing an increase in T20 franchise leagues and more opportunities for players to earn money as freelancers, rather than rely on a national contract. That is completely different to when she debuted in 2007 and played purely as an amateur while working as a speed-point technician to pay the bills. Seven years later, in 2014, Cricket South Africa were able to contract seven women’s players and Ismail was among them. She would go on to play for another nine years, finishing with one Test cap, 127 ODI appearances and 113 T20Is. Ismail’s 191 ODI wickets are the second-most in the women’s game, behind Jhulan Goswami while her 123 T20I wickets is the fourth-biggest career-haul for any bowler. She holds the women’s record for the most ODI wickets in a calendar year – 37 in 2022 – the most wickets at a single ground – 24 in Potchefstroom – and the most T20I wickets where the batter was bowled: 42.Ismail played in four fifty-over World Cups and all eight T20 World Cups, dating back to 2009, and reached three semi-finals and memorably, the home T20 World Cup final earlier this year. Her fiery spell in the semi-final against England saw South Africa reach their first senior World Cup final, and included some of the fastest deliveries in the women’s game as Ismail sent the speed gun upwards of 128kph. She was known for her efforts to continually set the bar higher in terms of speed and her uncompromising on-field persona.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“As I look back on my international career, I am so grateful for all the opportunities and experiences I have had,” Ismail’s statement read. “I have loved being able to compete at the highest level and I am so proud of being able to be part of a wonderful group of players who have led the way for women in cricket. The memories I have will stay with me forever.”Ismail’s retirement comes at a time of transition for South Africa’s women’s team.Since December 2022, South Africa have lost five players who were part of their first wave of professionalisation: Mignon du Preez, Lizelle Lee, Dane van Niekerk, Trisha Chetty and now Ismail. CSA are working to further professionalise the women’s game with a women’s director of cricket and a fully professional domestic league in the works for the 2023/23 season. They are also expected to announce equal match fees for women’s and men’s teams imminently. While the administration strategises around the future of the women’s game, they also congratulated Ismail on a stellar career.”This is a poignant but celebratory moment for South African cricket and the global game as a whole, as we celebrate and honour an incredible cricketer in Shabnim Ismail,” Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s Director of Cricket said. “Shabnim has transcended women’s cricket as a fierce competitor with the ability of making any batter uncomfortable at the crease with her rapid pace that regularly surpassed 120kph throughout her career. She will be sorely missed by the team and all South African cricket fans as she continues to inspire the next generation of cricketers during her remaining domestic career in all parts of the globe.”

Real Madrid the last club standing in European Super League as Barcelona back out of campaign to challenge UEFA and the Champions League

Barcelona have abandoned the European Super League project, leaving Real Madrid isolated in their push to challenge UEFA. The Catalan giants believe UEFA’s Champions League reforms now meet their demands, ending their pursuit of a breakaway competition. The move marks a dramatic shift in stance that leaves Florentino Perez as the last pillar keeping the project alive.

Barcelona drop Super League stance after UEFA reforms

According to , Barcelona have decided to distance themselves from the European Super League, believing that the Champions League’s new format addresses many of the concerns that originally pushed them towards the breakaway idea. The Blaugrana are said to be satisfied with increased revenues and structural changes promised by UEFA, and no longer see the need for a rival competition.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportReal Madrid left alone in battle against UEFA

The Super League, first unveiled in 2021 by clubs including Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, collapsed under intense fan backlash and regulatory threats. While English sides swiftly pulled out, Madrid and Barca were among the last to cling to the concept. With Joan Laporta’s club now publicly satisfied with UEFA, Florentino Perez is left as the lone figure still pushing for the controversial tournament.

Improved relations with UEFA boost Barcelona’s confidence

Relations between UEFA and Barcelona have warmed in recent months, with Laporta’s administration believing they are being listened to more seriously. Aleksander Ceferin’s appearance in the Montjuic stadium during Barca’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain symbolised that improved relationship. Even though a legal ruling could favour the Super League’s promoters soon, Barcelona are set to let the project fade quietly, using the decision only as leverage to keep UEFA on their toes.

With Barca stepping away, the Super League looks increasingly like a fading dream but Perez’s persistence means the debate over UEFA’s dominance may not disappear anytime soon.

Saharan, Dhas lead India into ninth final with epic partnership

India’s title defence at the Under-19 World Cup met its sternest challenge from hosts South Africa in a pulsating semifinal clash in Benoni. Then Uday Saharan, the captain, and Sachin Dhas put on a game-changing 171-run stand that set the tone for a come-from-behind victory. India are now into their fifth straight final, where they await the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between Pakistan and Australia.Related

  • Kwena Maphaka is making things happen, and things are happening for him

For the first time in the tournament, India decided to chase. And at 32 for 4 in their chase of 245, they were on the rack. South Africa’s pace attack brought fire, hostility and plenty of thrills to an engaging opening burst where every ball was an event of its own. It needed Dhas’s ice-cool temperament and Saharan’s steel to bail India out with a record fifth-wicket stand at men’s Under-19 World Cups.Yet, despite the record partnership, India had late jitters when Dhas, Aravelly Avanish and Murugan Abhishek fell in quick succession. India needed 18 off 16 with three wickets in hand. Raj Limbani, the swing bowler who had landed the early punches with three massive strikes, then flicked his first ball for six over deep midwicket to take India within touching distance.Saharan nearly saw India home but was run out with India needing one run. It took him an eternity to walk off, distraught at not being able to finish the job, but he wasn’t to be denied as Limbani belted a boundary off Nquobani Mokoena to trigger joyous scenes in the Indian camp. South Africa were crestfallen, wondering how they let India escape after Kwena Maphaka and Tristan Luus had cut through their top order in near-unplayable opening spells.Maphaka removed Adarsh Singh off the first ball of India’s chase with a lifter that he gloved to the wicketkeeper. At the other end, Luus peppered Musheer Khan with a series of inswingers before having him fend a short ball into the slips. Musheer’s wicket was massive considering he had been the glue holding India’s batting together all tournament.Tristan Luus followed up a late cameo with three wickets in his opening spell•ICC/Getty Images

Arshin Kulkarni, known for his big hitting and pulsating starts, shelved all that aggression in an effort to dig in, until he threw his hands at an away-going delivery to be caught in the slips, while Priyanshu Moliya’s loose drive was pouched by keeper Lhuan-dre Pretorius. By now, the bands were playing and the home fans roared.Dhas and Saharan ducked and weaved their way away from the short balls to begin with, seemingly unperturbed by being made to look ugly by South Africa’s pace attack. And then as they slowly ate into the daunting target, they found their feet and timing. Saharan was industrious and Dhas a little more enterprising as he kept picking boundaries off every loose offering.Dhas had cut his teeth as a finisher during the run-up to the World Cup. Until Tuesday, he’d only once faced over 20 deliveries in an innings in the tournament. But this was his opportunity to deliver, and he embraced the challenge. Last week against Nepal, Dhas and Saharan had bailed India out of a similar position after they’d lost three early wickets. Here the stakes were higher, and the quality of bowling several notches higher, perhaps even the tournament’s best, which is why their fightback was all the more commendable. Before India’s batters led the way, their plethora of spin options strangled South Africa after Limbani had made the ball talk with his big inswing. From 46 for 2, Pretorius and Richard Seletswane went about repairing the innings with a 72-run third-wicket stand, but consumed 22.1 overs in the process to put immense pressure on the lower middle order for momentum.Pretorius fell searching for big runs in an effort to make up for Seletswane’s slowdown – he was on 25 not out off 75 balls at one point. This pressure slowly crept up on South Africa’s lower order, helping the spin duo of Musheer and Saumy Pandey dictate terms. In all, spin accounted for figures of 31-2-120-3.Juan James, the captain, and Luus struck some big blows towards the end to help South Africa nudge towards 250, the last five overs producing 49 runs. This gave South Africa more than a fighting chance, which their fast bowlers built on significantly, before they ran into Saharan and Dhas.

Mitchell Starc will put himself up for a return to the IPL next year, viewing it as ideal preparation for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA in June.If picked up by a franchise, it would be Starc’s first appearance in the tournament since 2015 – overall he has made 27 appearances in two seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 2018, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders before withdrawing through injury and on other occasions has considered a return before opting to prioritise time at home amid a hectic multi-format schedule for Australia.Related

However, next year is comparatively light for Australia with only the T20 World Cup scheduled between a tour of New Zealand in March and white-ball series against Afghanistan, Ireland and England from late August.”Look it’s been eight years. I’m definitely going back in [next] year,” Starc told the about his IPL ambitions. “Amongst other things, it’s a great lead-up to the T20 World Cup.”So a good opportunity to see if anyone’s interested in the IPL, then lead into the T20 World Cup. And it’s somewhat of a quiet winter next year…in comparison to this winter, so I think a perfect opportunity to put my name in.”One of the major reasons Starc has previously sidelined the IPL is his desire to ensure he is fully available for Test cricket. While not putting a timeline on how long his career will go, he would like to reach a century of appearances in the format. Glenn McGrath is the only fast bowler to achieve that milestone for Australia.Starc currently sits on 82 Tests and if he features in all of Australia’s upcoming fixtures on the Future Tours Programme, his 100th game would come up during the 2025-26 Ashes.”Not just get to 100, I’d like to be good enough to be picked for 100 Tests,” he said. “And then the big one obviously in a couple of weeks is the World Cup, which in India just goes to another level.”And then you look at the one-day format, it’s sort of four years in between World Cups, so where do I see myself in that mix? But I’ve got to get to the end of this World Cup first.”But we’ve got some superstars coming through. You’ve got your Jhye Richardsons, your Sean Abbotts, your Spencer Johnsons. You’ve got plenty of young guys coming through. [Lance] Morris is going to be a gun.”I try not to look too far ahead with anything. Obviously, we want to do well in the World Cup. Then we’ve got five Test matches here in Australia and then I haven’t actually played a Test in New Zealand, so hopefully I’m on that tour and look forward to that challenge as well.”

£300,000-a-week Man City star on chopping block in horde of summer exits

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola could sanction the departure of an “incredible” £300,000-a-week player this summer, as the club plan an overhaul of the squad, according to a Sky Sports journalist.

Man City reach seven FA Cup semi-finals in a row

The Blues secured their place in the last four of England’s oldest competition on Sunday afternoon, as they came from a goal down to beat AFC Bournemouth 2-1. The FA Cup represents City’s only chance of winning silverware this season, and Guardiola believes his side were “outstanding” in their win over the Cherries.

He was saved by O'Reilly: Pep must drop 4/10 Man City dud after Bournemouth

Man City won their FA Cup semi-final 2-1 on Sunday

ByJoe Nuttall Mar 31, 2025

“It was harder for them [Bournemouth]. We played an outstanding game and had incredible chances but missed a penalty. We conceded with one chance we gave away. Our approach was magnificent. Seven times in a row in the semi-final in the FA Cup, no team has done it, and it will be difficult for any other to do what these legendary players, the new ones and the old ones, will have done,” Guardiola told the BBC.

Pep was then asked about City reaching the FA Cup semi-finals for a seventh consecutive season, and he labelled it an “unbelievable” achievement.

It is unbelievable. The way we competed today compared to the way we played in the first game here [in the Premier League]. I was not good enough to overcome that situation then. We were sloppy for many games, and I was not able to let them realise is what they have done today. For example, Brighton was a difficult game; we didn’t play our best, but we fought. This is what had to happen.”

Man City could sanction Grealish exit as Pep plans busy summer

Despite possible success in the FA Cup, it has been a poor campaign for the Blues, and therefore, there is expected to be plenty of incomings and outgoings come the summer.

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man City could look to sell Jack Grealish this summer as the Blues plan a busy summer of change.

Plettenberg states that City are planning a squad overhaul in the summer, and with them holding an interest in players such as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Larsson, the likes of İlkay Gündoğan and Kevin De Bruyne are likely departures when their contracts expire, while Grealish could also be moved on despite his not ending until 2026.

Grealish, who earns £300,000 a week at the Etihad Stadium, has struggled for regular game time this season, playing just 16 times in the Premier League, six of which have been starts, and the last one came in the defeat to Aston Villa back in December.

Despite the lack of game time, Guardiola has continued to heap praise on the Englishman, labelling him “incredible”.

“I want him to make goals and assists, and he does too, but it’s not about that. It’s about his contribution without the ball and what he can produce for the other ones. He never complains about that.”

Chelsea now battling Barcelona for "warrior" £25m defender who pocketed Leao

Chelsea have now joined the race for a £25m right-back, but they are set to face competition for his signature from Barcelona and Liverpool, according to a report.

Reece James back to his best

There is arguably little reason for the Blues to make a move for a new right-back this summer, given that they are well-stocked in that area of the pitch, with Reece James now showing signs he could be back to his best after several injury setbacks.

James returned to the England team for the first time in two-and-a-half years against Latvia, and the 25-year-old put in a top-quality performance, opening the scoring in the Three Lions’ comprehensive 3-0 victory.

That said, Enzo Maresca may want to err on the side of caution, given that his captain is very susceptible to injuries, and there has also been speculation about Malo Gusto’s future, with Liverpool shortlisting the right-back as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As such, a new right-back may be required in the summer transfer window, and Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, according to a report from Caught Offside.

Liverpool and Barcelona are said to be in fierce competition for Read’s signature, with the Merseyside club looking set to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold amid interest from Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Atlético Madrid are also named as potential suitors for the defender, but Feyenoord should be in a strong negotiating position, given that he remains contracted until 2028, meaning they could hold out for €25m – €30m (£21m – £25m)

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the 18-year-old for his performances in both legs of Feyenoord’s Champions League tie against AC Milan earlier this season, while also branding the teenager a “warrior” of a defender.

The youngster was faced with the difficult task of dealing with left-winger Rafael Leao, but he managed to keep the Portugal international quiet across the two legs, helping his side to a clean sheet with a solid performance in the first encounter.
