Zohaib Khan's heroics help HBL beat WAPDA in final

Umar Akmal plays a cut•Getty Images

An all-round batting effort by Habib Bank Limited (HBL) was enough to overpower Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in the Quaid-e-Azam One-Day Cup final, with Umar Gul’s men clinching the trophy with a 62-run win. Put in to bat by WAPDA after losing the toss, all of HBL’s top order contributed, with seven of the top eight reaching double figures. Zohaib Khan at No. 7 was the top scorer, as well as the fastest one, his unbeaten 68 coming off just 57 balls to help HBL surge close to 300. He was adjudged the Player of the Match. Aside from him, Rameez Aziz (55), Umar Akmal (49) and Imran Farhat (40) all kept the scores ticking over, without allowing the bowlers to stem the tide with regular wickets. It was WAPDA’s internationally capped fast bowlers who were most expensive, with Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan conceding 71 and 59 runs in their allotted quota respectively. In response, WAPDA overcame the early loss of Kamran Akmal to amass a 98-run stand for the second wicket, Rafatullah Mohmand and captain Salman Butt both scoring half-centuries. But after Agha Salman removed both batsmen within four overs of each other, the wheels came off the chase, and HBL took full control. No other batsman crossed 30 as HBL landed regular blows to WAPDA’s hopes with intermittent wickets. As was the case with the runs, the wickets were shared around too, among five different bowlers, including Zohaib. By the end, WAPDA were running out of players, and found themselves bowled out with over five overs still to go.HBL and WAPDA had each finished third in their respective groups en route to the quarter-finals, but beat higher-ranked KRL and PTV to advance to the final.

Chelsea’s talented academy youngster could be their next Raheem Sterling

Chelsea opted to hire Mauricio Pochettino as manager in the summer and Todd Boehly armed him with the necessary funds to bolster his squad.

While a ludicrous amount of money was spent on the likes of Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, a key theme was present throughout the majority of their business and that was a strategy of recruiting players under the age of 23.

Since Boehly took over, the Blues recruitment model has shifted towards acquiring youngsters, who they can develop into superstars, as opposed to players in their prime.

Pochettino boasts a strong track record of developing young players, so he felt like the perfect man to lead Chelsea into a new era.

And he's already demonstrated those powers by getting the best out of Palmer, who has posted eight goal contributions since arriving from Manchester City in the summer.

Competition for places in the first-team is overflowing, but the Argentine also has an impressive roster of players to handpick from his academy, including 17-year-old winger Ato Ampah, who could become the club's next Raheem Sterling.

Ato Ampah's season in numbers

The explosive winger, who signed as an under-11 from grassroots football, has been in terrific goalscoring form in the under-18 Premier League this term and has demonstrated his ability as a regular source of goals from wide.

Described by Chelsea's official website as a 'very quick and dynamic attacking player', Ampah has racked up an impressive four goals and supplied two assists in four matches, including a hand in all five goals in their 5-1 rout of Aston Villa.

Much like Sterling, who can operate on either flank, the talented teenager can play in a number of forward positions and this show of versatility will only increase his first-team chances in the future.

Ampah has always had the desire to beat his opponent with pace and skill to fashion opportunities for his team, with the video above depicting the youngster terrorising defences in the under-16s, and this season he's producing the end product to match his sensational approach play.

Likewise, Sterling has become renowned for those attributes throughout his career, rising to prominence as one of the league's most coveted wingers.

It is therefore impressive that Ampah – who has already trained with the first team – is currently on par with such a quality player in terms of scoring and that is a testament to the teenager's talents.

Raheem Sterling's season by numbers

During his first 38 games in a Chelsea shirt, Sterling struggled to replicate the form he showed at Man City, having only scored nine goals.

However, since the arrival of Pochettino, the 28-year-old has shown signs of returning to his scintillating best.

In 14 matches this season, the Englishman has produced five goals and supplied two assists in all competitions and although that form didn't warrant him a place in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad, the second half of the season will prove pivotal to his chances.

With a shot at EURO 2024 glory on the cards next summer, the fleet-footed winger will want to play a starring role in his nation's chances having featured at every major tournament since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

While his clear aim is to get back into England reckoning, Ampah will be continuing his development in Chelsea's youth setup with the hope of one day fulfilling his dream of pulling on the famous Blue shirt.

Klopp has spoken to "beast" Liverpool think they may sign in surprise deal

Liverpool already look back on their way to their seat at the table among Europe's elite after just one season away. Anyone hoping for their permanent exit from that very table looks set to be bitterly disappointed by the end of the current campaign following the Reds' blistering start, which has seen them lose just one game in all competitions.

That one loss came against Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur in the most controversial game of the season so far. Since then, Jurgen Klopp's side have continued their impressive run and sit fourth, three points adrift of Spurs. Those at Anfield will still be hoping to make their return to the title race, however, and one particular summer transfer could ensure Liverpool's place among silverware for years to come.

Liverpool transfer news

Liverpool enjoyed one of the busiest summers in the Premier League to rebuild Klopp's side into the pending force that we have so far seen this season. The German made some ruthless decisions, showing the exit door to club captain Jordan Henderson, as well as Naby Keita, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho. Arriving in their absence were Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo, who have all endured solid starts to their Liverpool careers.

Proving their transfer prowess, the Reds may yet hit the jackpot too. According to L'Equipe, Liverpool still believe they can sign Kylian Mbappe upon the expiry of his Paris Saint-Germain contract next summer in what would be one of the biggest transfer shocks in football history. It's no secret, of course, that Real Madrid are the frontrunners for the Frenchman's signature as they look to bring an end to the ongoing saga by finally securing Mbappe's arrival next year.

Liverpool are seemingly still lurking, however, and the fact that Klopp met with Mbappe in the summer will only have placed them in a better position to convince the PSG star to choose Anfield over the Bernabeu.

Liverpool should pull out all the stops for Mbappe

If Liverpool managed to land Mbappe it could change the landscape of English football. This is a player who very nearly single-handedly stole the crown from Lionel Messi's head in the World Cup final, a player who has already performed on every big stage imaginable, whether that be in Qatar, in France or in the Champions League.

Compared to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Mbappe's stats this season make him one of just a few that can survive a comparison with the Egyptian, as per FBref.

The former Monaco talent has been at the centre of praise from the very best that football has to offer, including Messi himself, who told TUDN Mexico: "Kylian is a different player, a beast who is very strong in one-on-one, who goes into space, who is very fast, who scores a lot of goals. He is a complete player and he has proved it for years, and in the years to come, he will certainly be among the best."

“Real blow for Southampton” – Journalist reacts to Saints injury news

Southampton could be set to lose one of their summer signings to injury for the forseeable future, and one journalist has reacted to the disappointing news he’s hearing from St. Mary’s.

Hull vs Southampton team news

In the Championship, Russell Martin already has Jack Stephens on the sidelines having been missing since August, but there has recently been some more encouraging news regarding the fitness of a fresh face who is yet to make his first appearance for the club.

According to Saints reporter Mark Wyatt, Ross Stewart could be set to make the bench for this weekend’s second-tier game vs Hull City at the MKM Stadium, but with one player likely to return to domestic action, another is unfortunately expected to take his place in the treatment room on the south coast.

Since putting pen to paper on a season-long loan over the summer, Manchester City centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis has started all six of the games he’s featured in, and he’s formed a solid defensive partnership with Jan Bednarek (WhoScored – Harwood-Bellis statistics), but there is a chance that he might be ruled out for an unknown period of time.

England’s youth international returned from representing his nation early last week after sustaining an injury, but with further assessment and any kind of comment yet to be released regarding the extent of the 21-year-old’s problem, it isn’t looking good.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis injury update

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones offered his verdict following the injury update on Taylor Harwood-Bellis and admitted that it will be a concern should he get sidelined at Southampton.

He said: "Yeah it would be [a blow]. He's played a significant role this season and obviously, of all of the things that have gone wrong for Southampton, at least they had the makings of a partnership that was showing real promise.

"You've got both ends of the equation there in terms of youth, experience, and hope, and then you've also got someone of such experience in Bednarek, so it's a real blow for Southampton if he's going to be out for a while.

"Obviously, they are getting back in and need to check him out thoroughly, and they won't take any risks on him. But from a Southampton perspective, they really will hope they can get him back in that team as soon as possible."

Burnley's former loan defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

How tall is Taylor Harwood-Bellis?

Standing at 6 foot 2, Harwood-Bellis has been a rock at the heart of Southampton’s backline since joining, where he’s been averaging 4.2 clearances and 2.8 aerial wins per game in the Championship, highlighting the real physical presence he provides.

The Stockport-born talent is also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having posted 15 contributions, ten goals and five assists, since the start of his career, showing the threat he can pose when it comes to set pieces (Transfermarkt – Harwood-Bellis statistics).

Additionally, Harwood-Bellis knows what it takes to get out of the division having achieved promotion with Burnley last term, where his fighting spirit saw him hailed a “warrior” by journalist Josh Bunting, but this is another attribute that Martin could have to cope without.

Agreement in principle: New Liverpool contract for “world-class” star close

Liverpool have a number of influential players whose contracts are up soon, but one hero could be set to sign a new deal, according to a new update.

Which Liverpool players are out of contract soon?

The Reds were cruelly beaten 2-1 away to Tottenham on Saturday evening, having battled with nine men for so long at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Joel Matip's last-gasp own goal inflicted a first Premier League defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp's side, on a night when everything seemed to go against them.

Liverpool showed that they are title challengers, however, matching their highly-rated opponents on their own turf for large periods, despite having fewer players on the pitch.

Klopp has assembled a fantastic squad in recent months, bringing in several new faces and getting rid of ageing individuals, and they look a far more formidable team than they did last season.

There are some key players whose contracts are gradually running out, however, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago and Mohamed Salah all seeing their deals expiring by the time the summer of 2025 arrives, among others.

Liverpool manager JuergenKloppcelebrates after the match

Which Liverpool player may have agreed new deal?

According to an update from Football Insider, Alexander-Arnold has agreed a new deal in principle – one that will keep him at Liverpool for the foreseeable future:

"Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle over a new contract with Trent Alexander-Arnold worth more than £55million, sources have told Football Insider. The new package will see Alexander-Arnold earning more than £200,000 per-week plus bonuses and is expected to be signed off soon.

"On 29 September, Football Insider revealed that the Reds have been putting the finishing touches on a new deal for the 24-year-old after securing an “agreement in principle” a week previous. Liverpool have made significant progress on a new long-term deal for the defender, whose current agreement expires in 2025.

"Clubs chiefs have been working alongside the player’s camp and are now completing the final elements of the deal, which is expected to be signed and announced soon."

This is fantastic news for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, especially Klopp, with the report saying that a new deal for Alexander-Arnold was a priority for the manager, and the full-back is someone who will hopefully still be producing brilliance in the Reds shirt in 10 years' time.

The 24-year-old has had a magnificent career already, becoming one of the world's most talented and influential full-backs, leading to former Barcelona and Brazil icon Dani Alves to describe him as "world-class". His tally of 73 assists from right-back speaks volumes about his creativity.

Alexander-Arnold is now Liverpool's vice-captain, and will surely take over the armband from skipper Van Dijk when he eventually moves on – the former is eight years younger than the latter – so that could be a clear reason for him wanting to stay put for as long as possible.

A boyhood Reds supporter, it wouldn't make sense for the Englishman to go anywhere else, especially at this point in his career, and it looks as if it is a matter of time until a deal is announced.

Liverpool: Reds in "very advanced" talks with highly-rated target

Liverpool could look for new signings in the January transfer window, and they are reportedly in "very advanced" talks with one player, according to a fresh claim.

Do Liverpool need to sign a centre-back?

The Reds had a busy time of things during the summer, completely revamping their midfield after many issues in that area of the pitch last season, playing a big part in them finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Ageing individuals such as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson departed for Saudi Arabia, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have already replaced them impressively since arriving. Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch have also come in, as Jurgen Klopp looks to build his next great team at Anfield.

It was only the midfield that was focused on during the summer window in the end, however, which was a decision that ultimately left some fans feeling a little perplexed. Many felt that a new centre-back was also needed, in order to bring a freshness there, not to mention more depth.

Virgil van Dijk is now 32 years of age and has shown signs of creaking in recent times, while Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez find themselves sidelined through injury too often.

While no central defender was added in the summer, a new update suggests that one could be on his way to Merseyside in the near future.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

Will Liverpool sign Piero Hincapie?

According to Ecuadorian outlet Marca 90 [via LFC Transfer Room on X], Liverpool's talks with Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie are at a "very advanced" stage, suggesting a move could come to fruition. The deal could be worth £48m, although it isn't specified if a January or summer switch is the more likely option.

This could be an absolutely wonderful piece of business by Liverpool is they manage to get a transfer over the line, with Hincapie arguable one of Europe's most highly-rated young centre-backs at the moment.

The 21-year-old has already made 77 appearances for his current club side and won 27 caps for Ecuador, while former Leverkusen manager Gerardo Seoane has described him as "really impressive".

Liverpool are crying out for a left-sided central defender who can also do a job at left-back if required, and Hincapie ticks all the boxes, in that respect. He could come in as both as a strong option to compete with Van Dijk and Andy Robertson for minutes, and at just 21, he could be a mainstay of the defence for many years to come.

To already be such a key player for club and country at his age, in a position where experience can often be vital, says so much about the Ecuadorian's potential as a footballer, and the Reds could be acquiring a special talent if this strong interest turns into an eventual move.

Hincapie has averaged three clearances and 2.3 tackles per game in the Bundesliga so far this season, outlining his defensive qualities, but he has also completed 85.1% of his passes, showing that he can be impressive in and out of possession, which is something that Klopp demands in all of his defenders.
