New Zealand and England to compete for Crowe-Thorpe Trophy

New Zealand and England will compete for The Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, honoring the legacies of the late Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. The trophy, made from wood sourced from a bat from each player, in collaboration with NZC, ECB and the families of each player, will be unveiled on Thursday morning in Christchurch ahead of the start of the three-match series. The trophy was designed by David Ngawati of Mahu Creative, who also designed the Tangiwai Shield for New Zealand’s Test series with South Africa. Both Crowe and Thorpe enjoyed hugely successful Test careers. Crowe, regarded as New Zealand’s finest batter, averaged 45.36 with 17 centuries. Thorpe, who tragically passed in August, averaged 44.66 with 16 hundreds. The bats gifted by the two families to create the trophy carry special meaning for these two sides. Crowe’s was the Gunn and Moore with which he scored his century at Lord’s 1994. Thorpe’s Kookaburra was the one used for back-to-back hundreds against New Zealand in 1997.Crowe and Thorpe went on to become mentors for latter generations, including members of both squad who will compete for this three-match series.”It is absolutely an honour,” said Joe Root, who worked closely with Thorpe during his time as a batting coach with the ECB. “What a great man. For me personally, to have someone who you watched growing up and took a lot from, then to get the opportunity to work with him as a coach. The amount he put into to my game, to have the opportunity to play for something with his name on it is really quite special and a nice way to remember his legacy and a player.”It’s a side that he had a lot of success against, a brilliant double hundred. He told us many times about that innings here in Christchurch [an unbeaten 200 in 2002], normally over a glass of sauvignon blanc.”It’s a really fitting way to remember two of England and New Zealand’s great players. How both sides play represents how they played the game pretty well. I expect a really exciting series, like the previous one was. It will be a really fitting way to remember two brilliant players.”In a statement released on Tuesday, NZC CEO Scott Weenink added: “Today’s generation of players are standing on the shoulders of those who went before them, players like Graham and Martin. It’s good that we recognise this and respect their legacy. Both those players were seriously good batsmen who understood the game intimately – they commanded respect wherever they went.”ECB chief executive Richard Gould said: “Martin and Graham are two legends of the game, and it is fitting that Test series between our two men’s sides will now be contested in their name.”It’s heart-breaking to have lost both men so early, but by honouring them in this way I hope we can help ensure the memories and legacies of two of our nations’ finest cricketers live on long into the future.”The Crowe-Thorpe Trophy will be unveiled by Deb Crowe (Martin’s sister) and former England Test captain Michael Atherton at the Hagley Oval ahead on the national anthems on Thursday.

Ward leads NSW talent in piling on runs against Blues

The hosts struck with the first ball of the day at the SCG but it was harder going after that

Adopted Tasmanian Tim Ward has his side into a promising position on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales, as three Blues juniors impressed against their old state. In his second game back in Tasmania’s team after being dropped last summer, Ward hit 91 at the SCG on Sunday, before falling late in the day when caught down the leg side. His runs came as Nivethan Radhakrishnan and Jordan Silk also hit half-centuries, giving Tasmania a chance to finally lay the foundation for their first Shield victory of the summer.Ward, Radhakrishnan and Silk never played a senior match for NSW in their career, but all were raised in Sydney and came through the Blues’ system before moving south. On Sunday, each had success on their return home, with Ward’s runs particularly timely. The 26-year-old was the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year in 2022, and part of the Australia A team in 2023 after a strong start to domestic cricket. But he fell out of form last summer, and found himself dropped late in the season after three consecutive ducks.Ward again began this season on the outer, before hitting 51 on return for Tasmania against Queensland in the last round. The No. 3 continued that form into Sunday, after Jackson Bird had Jake Weatherald edging to gully from a poor shot on the first ball of the match.Ward drove Sean Abbott for four early in the day, and later jumped down the deck to hit Adam Zampa for six over midwicket. But for the most part it was an innings of steady accumulation, before his 246-ball vigil was ended when he was caught behind off Abbott.Radhakrishnan’s runs also came after being recalled to the struggling Tasmania side. Playing in just his second first-class match, the 21-year-old who rose to prominence as an ambidextrous spinner, impressed with the bat for Tasmania in his 55.He cover-drove Jack Edwards for one four and hit him behind point for another in the same over, before using his feet to hit Green to the long-on rope. But he was out to the spinner four balls later, when trapped on the pads to one that went straight on.Silk then walked to the wicket and hit 74, before he too was caught behind off Abbott inside the last 20 overs of the day.Abbott finished the day with 2 for 55, after earlier having Radhakrishnan dropped twice in the slips and once by wicketkeeper Josh Philippe in the first session.

Everton's own Declan Rice: Friedkin make approach for once-£60m Brazil star

Everton are now believed to have made an approach to complete the signing of a “world class” player who knows the Premier League well but has fallen out of favour at his current club.

A host of players continue to be mentioned as options for the Blues in the summer transfer window, including Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper. The 25-year-old Englishman started all 46 of the Blades’ Championship matches last season, helping them reach the playoff final, but defeat to Sunderland at Wembley ruined their chances of promotion, and he may like the idea of heading to the top flight.

Michael Cooper in action for Sheffield United.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is another player who could want to remain in the Premier League, following his side’s relegation to the second tier, and Everton have been backed to snap him up, amid their search for more quality in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, Millwall forward Mihailo Ivanovic is another reported target for the Merseysiders, with the Serb potentially seen as a strong replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Just 20 years of age, he scored an impressive 12 goals in 23 Championship starts last term and could serve as the old fashioned number nine alongside the more elusive Thierno Barry.

Everton make approach for "world class" midfielder

According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport [via Goodison News], Everton have made an approach for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, seeing him as an excellent choice to bring in this summer. The Blues are said to have asked for information regarding the 27-year-old, but it is added that no offer has been tabled for him yet.

He joined Juventus for around £42m last summer but was once worth a much higher figure, with Neil Moxley even claiming “somebody’s just having a bit of a laugh” when he was quoted at £60m while thriving at Aston Villa, pointing to Declan Rice’s £105m move to Arsenal as a benchmark.

Douglas Luiz in action for Juventus.

Indeed, albeit out of form and out of favour in Turin last season, Luiz is a player who has proven his worth at the highest level for many years now, having been such an influential performer for Villa, so he could be a brilliant signing for Everton.

The Brazilian has 175 appearances to his name in the Premier League, as well as 20 goals and 18 assists, with John McGinn heaping praise on his ability, describing him as “world class”, and Jermaine Pennant calling him better than Rice in the past.

“Any team would dream to have Rice, but there are better sixes in the Premier League at the moment. I would say Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa, I think he can do everything that Rice can do and better. I think he assists more, he chips in with goals more than Rice. Creativity-wise he’s better, flair is better, he can put in a tackle just like Rice, break up play just like Rice. So I think if someone said to me you can have Douglas Luiz for £60m or Declan Rice for £100m, easy every day of the week, Douglas Luiz.”

Luiz is still in his prime, so this wouldn’t be a case of Everton splashing out on a player who has peaked, and his box-to-box style could be a great asset for David Moyes.

Celtic set sights on Italy international who has been compared to Jorginho

Glasgow Celtic are starting to make meaningful strides in the transfer market and could now be set to compete for the signature of a talented midfielder, according to a report.

Brendan Rodgers addresses Celtic's next steps in the window

Five signings have made their way to Celtic since the window opened, and plenty more will be expected from the Hoops support as the countdown to their curtain-raiser against St Mirren draws closer.

Speaking after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Estrela de Amadora in pre-season, Brendan Rodgers confirmed his side are working on securing new faces in midfield and attack, admitting his side are a little short amid the departure of Nicolas Kuhn.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

He stated: “I think there’s work going on behind the scenes. It’s clear we need to improve the squad. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, there are loads of names floating about.”

“I think the positions you’ve mentioned, we’re clear that we need to improve our frontline. We lost Kyogo in January and another player with Nicolas gone. That’s a lot of goals that’s gone out of the team. So for us, we need to strengthen that area of the field. But the guys back home are working hard on that.”

Kawasaki Frontale striker Shin Yamada is set to join Celtic next week. However, their search for attacking reinforcements is unlikely to end there due to their pursuit of Napoli forward Giuseppe Ambrosino.

The next Jota: Celtic are now attempting to sign "very exciting" £3.2m star

As Celtic continue their busy summer transfer window activity, could the Hoops win the race to sign a “very exciting” £3.2m-rated Portugues youngster?

ByBen Gray Jul 13, 2025

Admittedly, there is a growing feeling among some supporters that Celtic are yet to really kick off the summer window in earnest, but that could all be about to change if recent developments are anything to go by.

Celtic fighting rival suitors for Salvatore Esposito

According to The Boot Room, Celtic are one of several clubs in the race to sign Spezia midfielder Salvatore Esposito, who could be allowed to leave his homeland on loan with an option to make any move permanent.

The scenario of an outright sale hasn’t been ruled out. Nevertheless, Brighton & Hove Albion, Burnley, Brentford, Fulham, Everton, Sunderland, and Rangers are also reportedly pursuing the one-cap Italy international.

Despite predominantly operating in a deep-lying midfield role, Esposito chipped in with seven goals and ten assists in 37 appearances across all competitions for Spezia, even if his sizeable contribution wasn’t enough to win his side promotion.

Previously, the 24-year-old has been likened to former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho by Jacek Kulig, so it will come as no surprise to see a lengthy list of clubs in the mix for his services.

Celtic have long sought another body in the six position to dictate play, albeit it would be intriguing to see whether Esposito and Callum McGregor could fit in the same side.

Martin picks out "very interesting" 13-goal striker as key target for Rangers

Rangers are believed to be interested in completing the signing of a “very interesting” attacking player in the summer transfer window.

Martin desperate to keep key players

Russell Martin is looking to nail his summer transfer business at Ibrox, having been confirmed as the Gers’ new manager last week, following a lengthy search for the right choice.

The Englishman will no doubt be eyeing new signings, but for now, he is equally focused on retaining the services of key current players.

“We have to try and keep our best players. I think we’re all really aligned with that. So unless things come in that really help the club to build and move forward, I don’t think it’s a necessity to do that [sell] at all. That’s my understanding of it. And we’ve all been really clear on it. So we’ll just have to wait and see. But I’m looking forward to working with those guys. There are a few positions where we’ll need to strengthen fairly quickly and fairly early on.”

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

In terms of players who have been mentioned as potential signings, Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes could be Martin’s first addition as Rangers manager, having worked with him at St Mary’s already, but it appears first up on the agenda is a new number nine.

Rangers want to sign "very interesting" attacker

According to a new report from 24 Sata, Rangers are interested in signing Westerlo forward Matija Frigan this summer, as Martin looks to bolster his attacking options. The 22-year-old is seen as an exciting option for the Scottish Premiership giants, with his performances for his current club being noticed on the “big stage” by clubs around Europe.

Frigan could be a great young signing for Rangers, having been described as a “very interesting” attacking player by scout Jacek Kulig in the past.

The Croatian has outlined his goalscoring prowess throughout his career, not least when he netted 15 times in just 32 appearances for HNK Rijeka, and he has made a total of 25 appearances across various youth levels for his country.

At 22, Frigan’s best years are still likely to be ahead of him, too, so Rangers would be acquiring the services of a player who could be a star at Ibrox for a long time to come.

Dream Guehi alternative: Newcastle make £40m "monster" a key target

Newcastle United will be aiming to bolster their defence this summer, and Marc Geuhi is still earmarked as a target.

The Crystal Palace defender has been on the club’s radar for a while now, and, with his contract set to expire next year, Eddie Howe may look to strike a deal to bring him to the club.

CrystalPalace's Joel Ward and Marc Guehi hold the trophy with teammates during the Victory celebrations

A recent report states that the Toon might be able to strike a deal worth £40m to sign Guehi this summer, given his contract status.

With other interest in him from elsewhere, however, might Howe target an alternative?

Newcastle could target a move for Liverpool defender

While Guehi has been a target for the Magpies for quite some time now, it looks as though he could perhaps miss the boat.

According to The Chronicle, Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah is a player who remains on the club’s radar this summer, as they look to bolster their defensive options.

Although the Anfield side won the Premier League title last term, the Englishman played a bit-part role in the success and could move on to pastures new.

He is also attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen, with Erik ten Hag looking to launch a bid worth around £40m for the Liverpool starlet this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

While Guehi remains one of the players that Howe is desperate to bring to Newcastle, the window is getting shorter for this move to happen.

Could he perhaps strike a deal to bring Quansah north instead? Only time will tell.

Why Newcastle must sign Jarell Quansah

There is no doubt that Guehi is heading into the peak years of his career. He will turn 25 next month and helped Palace win the FA Cup just last month.

Quansah, on the other hand, just turned 22 earlier this year and still has plenty of years left before he hits his peak, which is why he could be a dream alternative to the Eagles star.

As you can see in the table above, the England U21 international has the potential to offer more than Guehi from a defensive perspective, as he won a higher percentage of his duels and averaged more tackles and interceptions per 90 in the Premier League.

Under Jürgen Klopp, the defender made 17 league appearances throughout the 2023/24 campaign. He suitably impressed, finishing the season with an 89% pass success rate while winning 64% of his total duels contested and losing possession just 8.4 times per game.

When compared to his peers in the top flight that season, Quansah also ranked in the top 11% for aerial duels won per 90 (3.4) and in the top 3% for non-penalty goals (0.15) per 90.

It was perhaps no wonder that he was dubbed an “absolute monster” by talent scout Jacek Kulig that season for his performances. He hasn’t quite settled into Arne Slot’s side during the Dutchman’s maiden season at Anfield, however.

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah

The defender was restricted to just 25 appearances during 2024/25, with only 13 of those coming in the starting XI.

Does he need a fresh start to fulfil his potential? Newcastle would be the perfect place for him to gain regular gametime.

With Champions League football on the horizon, Quansah could become a regular under Howe at the Magpies as a dream alternative to Guehi this summer.

West Brom now considering "unbelievable" 3-4-1-2 manager to replace Mowbray

West Bromwich Albion are now considering a move for an “unbelievable” manager as a replacement for Tony Mowbray, according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey.

West Brom searching for Mowbray replacement

West Brom were in a strong position to reach the Championship play-offs for much of the season, but they endured a torrid run of form during the business end of the season, with the Mowbray era coming to an end after a 3-1 home defeat against Derby County.

Ultimately, the Baggies ended up finishing in ninth place, four points below the top six, which indicates a play-off finish could be possible next season if they appoint the correct successor to Mowbray, and they have a number of potential options in mind.

Tottenham Hotspur coach Ryan Mason has been reported to be the top target, while the Albion board could also look at bringing in Steve Cooper or Russell Martin, who are both out of work after being sacked by relegated Leicester City and Southampton this season.

Their own Parker: West Brom looking at "outstanding" Cifuentes alternative

West Bromwich Albion look to have a new top candidate to replace Tony Mowbray.

1 ByKelan Sarson May 5, 2025

It could make sense to bring in a manager with Premier League experience, but with West Brom looking to secure a top-six finish next season, there may be nobody better suited to the task than Stockport County boss Dave Challinor.

According to EFL Analysis correspondent Graeme Bailey, West Brom are now considering a move for Challinor, who may be capable of leading The Hawthorns outfit to the top six, considering he has never finished outside the play-offs in his career.

Stockport County manager DaveChallinorapplauds fans after the match

The Stockport manager has been shortlisted by the Baggies, having caught the eye by leading his side to a third-placed finish in League One this season, while also leading the Hatters to promotion from the National League and League 2.

"Unbelievable" Challinor could be exciting appointment

The 49-year-old is yet to manage a club the size of West Brom, but he has managed to impress everywhere he’s been in the lower leagues, achieving a total of seven promotions and most recently leading Stockport to League 1.

Wrexham may dominate the headlines, but what the former Tranmere Rovers man has achieved at Stockport is just as impressive, with his side finishing third in their first season in League 1, just five points below the Welsh side.

The Chester-born manager, who often deploys a 3-4-1-2 system, also received high praise for his achievements during his time with Hartlepool United, leading them to promotion from the National League in 2021.

It would be a gamble to appoint Challinor, given that he has no experience as a manager at Championship level, but his stellar record of leading teams to the play-offs indicates he could be an exciting appointment for West Brom, who will have aspirations of returning to the Premier League next season.

Liverpool now preparing offer to sign forward who Man Utd have bid £70m for

Liverpool are now preparing to make an offer to sign a “superb” attacking player who Manchester United have already offered £70 million for, according to a new report.

Liverpool chasing new attacking talent for summer additions

Agreeing a new contract with talisman Mohamed Salah is excellent news for the Reds, but it doesn’t appear to be stopping the soon-to-be Premier League champions from looking at players who they believe will improve their attack for next season.

Liverpool player has now joined Van Dijk and Salah by signing new contract

The Reds are putting their contract mess behind them.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 17, 2025

Given how Diogo Jota, Darwin Núñez, and at times Luis Diaz have struggled for consistency this season, Arne Slot looks to be in the market for new arrivals that can take the pressure off Salah.

It’s been reported that Liverpool are ready to make a £130 million offer to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The Sweden international is considered to be a priority for the Reds, and they hope this mouth-watering offer is enough to persuade Newcastle to agree a transfer.

It’s not just Isak that the Reds are looking at, as according to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are also lining up a move to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The forward is now expected to leave the Bees this summer, and a bid of around £50 million would be enough to secure a transfer.

Liverpool preparing offer to sign Aston Villa star Rogers

The list of attacking options doesn’t stop there, as according to Empire of the Kop, Liverpool have placed Morgan Rogers at the top of their transfer list and are preparing an offer to sign him from Aston Villa.

The report states that his performances for Villa throughout this season have placed him on Liverpool’s radar, and the Reds are now planning a ‘serious’ move to bring him to Anfield. But they are not alone in this race, as the report does add that Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and both Manchester clubs are also interested in the attacking midfielder.

In fact, Man United have already made a bid for Rogers worth £70 million, but it isn’t clear if he would be interested in a move to Old Trafford. Liverpool club chiefs have been left impressed by Rogers’ pace, dribbling and his ability to create clear-cut chances.

Rogers, who has been dubbed “superb” by scout/writer Jacek Kulig, has scored eight goals and recorded eight assists in 31 league games this season, making him one of Villa’s key attacking players.

A factor that Liverpool fans will hope works to their advantage is that Rogers is sponsored by Adidas, and the Reds have recently secured a £60 million deal per season with Adidas to be their new kit sponsor, perhaps increasing the motivation for FSG to complete a deal for a player who will see them thrive both on the pitch and off it.
