The ever evolving genius of Kieron Pollard

He announced himself as a T20 phenom years ago, but now he has become better than ever, as Super Kings found out

Manjrekar on Pollard’s knock: ‘One of greatest IPL innings we’ve seen’

T20 is as much a game of finer calculations as it is of sheer power. And on Saturday, Kieron Pollard showed what can be achieved if one mixes both in the right amount.Chasing 219, Pollard smashed an unbeaten 87 off just 34 balls, studded with eight sixes and six fours, to take the Mumbai Indians to an improbable win against the Chennai Super Kings. But when Pollard came out to bat, the task was even more daunting. Mumbai had lost three quick wickets and needed 132 runs from 62 balls. The Super Kings had four seamers in their attack and Pollard knew each of them would bowl their quota of four overs. That would leave two spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali, to carry out the fifth bowler’s job.Given the smaller boundaries at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, spinners were the easy targets. However, by the time Pollard marked his guard, 1.4 overs of spin had already been bowled. Krunal Pandya then managed just two runs in five balls of the third over spin. When Jadeja started the final over of spin, the 13th of the innings, Pollard was on strike. He knew it was his last chance to take advantage.”They had four overs of spin to bowl on a small ground,” Pollard told host broadcaster at the post-match presentation. “So I wanted to see if I can hit a couple of sixes off spinners firstly and then try to take it from there. I only got two overs against spin and had to maximise that over against Jadeja. When you see the conditions, the pitch and the bowlers, you know if you stay in for a period of time… the ground is small, and a couple of sixes were always going to keep us in the game.”2:43

Kieron Pollard: It was about picking the bowler and executing

Pollard is not a 360-degree player. His main scoring areas are down the ground and the leg side. To deny him big hits, bowlers generally bowl wide outside off.Jadeja also tried the same. After being hit for a six earlier in the over, he went wider in order to stay away from Pollard’s hitting arc.The ball was so far away from Pollard that if he had left it, it would have been called a wide. Despite taking a little step towards the leg side, Pollard reached out for it and not only did he connect, he hit it so well that the ball sailed over the sweeper cover. After the match, Pollard said he had been working on his off-side game.”As an individual, you have to evolve,” he said. “Guys bowl wide and you are missing out on some balls. You have to try and maximise that part [off side] of the field as well. A lot of practice goes into it. That has helped me tremendously. Now I can’t say I’m 360. I’m not getting close to there, but I’m maximising more angles in the field.”Pollard muscled the last ball of Jadeja’s over for yet another six, taking the over tally to 20 runs.He continued in the same vein against the pacers as well and took Mumbai to the brink of victory. With 16 needed from the final over, and Dhawal Kulkarni for company, he knew he needed to face all six balls from Lungi Ngidi. He refused two singles but ensured he saw his side home.”Dhawal is decent with the bat but in order for us to win, I needed to bat six balls,” he said. “That’s the pressure you have to take as an individual when you see the magnitude of the game and what’s needed. We have done this time and time again in practice, in scenarios. So it’s just a matter of keeping calm and try to execute.”Kieron Pollard hammered a 17-ball half-century•BCCI/IPLDuring the Super Kings’ innings, Pollard was also the most successful bowler for Mumbai, registering figures of 2-0-12-2. After the match, Hardik Pandya revealed on that Pollard loves his bowling more than his batting. Hardik said: “He hits sixes for breakfast but if he takes a wicket or he bowls well, for him, you know when you give candy to a baby, it’s like that.”He is livid with himself when he gives [away] runs because, I don’t know, he takes his bowling to the heart. I think batting he does from here , bowling happens from here I feel.”If so, Pollard must have felt like a child in a candy store during the Super Kings’ innings. Once Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ali to end his 108-run stand with Faf du Plessis, Mumbai grabbed the opportunity to sneak in a couple of overs from Pollard.Pollard conceded a single on each of his first four deliveries. On the fifth ball, a slower one, du Plessis miscued a scoop. Bumrah took the catch. Pollard took a bow.The next delivery was again a slower one and Suresh Raina holed out to deep square leg. This time Pollard broke into an Imran Tahir-esque celebratory run.Still, at the end of the day, it was his batting that left Hardik “speechless”. It prompted Krunal to declare “he is the G.O.A.T”. It made Rohit Sharma say he had “never seen a chase like that before”.

Bavuma, Harmer and Jansen script sensational South Africa win at treacherous Eden Gardens

South Africa started the day staring at defeat, only 63 ahead with three wickets in hand, but registered a stunning win, their first in India in 15 years and the second-smallest successful defence in Asia. The whooping and cheering among the South Africa players echoed amid a shocked Sunday crowd at Eden Gardens as the visitors bowled India out for 93 in the absence of their injured captain Shubman Gill.Temba Bavuma was ever present, scoring the only half-century of the match and taking South Africa to a lead of 123 on a pitch with extravagant sideways movement and variance in bounce. He was helped a little by some ordinary spin bowling on the third morning, but he had earned the errors after defending resolutely on the second evening.Related

The target of 124 was always going to be tricky with Simon Harmer outbowling India’s spinners in the country where he had a forgettable tour in 2015-16. The uneven bounce made Marco Jansen a handful, causing the double jeopardy you need to defend small totals.India began the day in the ascendance but not with bowlers likeliest to take a wicket. Axar Patel opening the day was a surprise, and as the singles flowed with ease you could sense panic. Rishabh Pant, who had been excellent with his rotation of bowlers and field placements on the second evening, began to change bowlers too quickly and also took a desperate review against Bavuma when Ravindra Jadeja had clearly pitched outside leg from over the wicket. That Jadeja was bowling over the wicket in itself was a sign of desperation when all you really needed to do on this surface was bowl a good length and shut the scoring. Jadeja, who until day two was the best player of the match, just struggled to maintain that length and bowled seven overs for 21 runs. Washington Sundar, one of the three spinners in the last four home Tests, was not used at all.Temba Bavuma and Corbin Bosch added crucial runs in the morning•Getty Images

Bavuma’s defence found an ally in Corbin Bosch’s big hits, which he deployed mainly against Kuldeep Yadav. The two added an invaluable 44 for the eighth wicket, 25 of which came off Bosch’s bat. Eventually it was the fast bowlers that kept India alive. Jasprit Bumrah hit the top of Bosch’s off, and Mohammed Siraj, in only his second over of the innings, got the better of Harmer and Keshav Maharaj with reverse swing. It was always going to be a tough target on this pitch, but India had hope in South Africa’s selection of only two spinners, one of whom, Maharaj, had gone for 16-1-66-1 in the first innings. Jansen, though, stunned them at the start in his first two overs to send back the openers. Both these balls jumped off a length, got big on the batters, and took the outside edge.Simon Harmer was unplayable at times•BCCI

Washington, India’s newest No. 3, played resolutely again, mirroring the first half of Bavuma’s innings and facing the most balls in the match, but as it tends to happen on these pitches, Dhruv Jurel put a long hop into the hands of deep midwicket. The ball did stop on him as it tends to happen on these pitches.Harmer might have got on the board with this fortunate wicket, but he bowled beautifully to earn that stroke of luck. Ten years after a crushing tour of India, he is back a much-improved bowler. He could change his trajectory subtly, most of the times able to bowl a good length at different paces. It showed in how he completely tied up the most dangerous batter in the India line-up, Pant, and eventually earned a return catch with dip and turn.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

At 38 for 4, Washington and Jadeja added 26 runs, looked comfortable, but this is when Jadeja’s old-school method of defending with the bat behind the pad came back to haunt him. Just like in the first innings. Once again out lbw pad-first to Harmer, Jadeja ended forgettably a Test he had been largely good in, one during which he became only the fourth man to take 300 wickets and score 4000 runs.Aiden Markram reminded India of the nightmare Glenn Phillips had been on lottery pitches last year when he came on and finally got the edge of a distraught Washington, who scored 31 off 92 to go with his 29 in the first innings. Harmer then spun one past Kuldeep when he slowed it down tantalisingly. At 77 for 7, India were left needing a miracle from Axar, who threatened one when Bavuma gave him a sighter against Maharaj. He hit two sixes and a four, but when he happened to mishit he found a calm Bavuma making a difficult over-the-shoulder catch look ridiculously easy.Siraj lasted only one ball, triggering wild celebrations, the loudest from Kagiso Rabada, who has tasted only defeat on two previous tours of India and was missing this Test with a rib injury.

Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani Had One-Word Response to Question About Playoff Jitters

Shohei Ohtani is one day away from beginning his postseason career.

Ohtani never cracked the playoff bracket once over his six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. But he led the crosstown Dodgers to the postseason in 2024 by becoming the first player in MLB history to mash 50 homers and steal 50 bases in a single season.

Is Ohtani nervous for the playoffs to begin?

"No," he said in English on Friday.

“It’s always been my childhood dream to be in important situations and play in important games," Ohtani said through a translator. "So I think the excitement of that is greater than anything else I could possibly feel.”

In his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani batted .310/.390/.646 with a league-leading 54 home runs and 130 RBIs in 159 games. He became just the 19th player in MLB history (and the first in the last 23 years) to notch over 400 total bases, registering 411.

Ohtani and the Dodgers will square off against right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease and the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday. Ohtani has batted 4-for-15 (.267) over his career against Cease with two homers, two walks and four RBIs.

England six wickets away from series win after Archer gets Gill before lunch

India lost both their overnight batters, Rahul and Gill, and still trail by 88

Shubman Gill celebrates his fourth century of the series•AFP/Getty Images

Lunch England took a huge step towards a series-clinching win just before lunch on the fifth day in Manchester when Jofra Archer finally dislodged Shubman Gill after 87 overs of resistance. When Gill walked out to face a hat-trick ball in the first over of India’s second innings, his team trailed by 311 runs and looked certain to lose within four days. But a doughty, defiant century – the fourth in his first series as India captain – kept the match and the series alive, trimming the deficit to under 100 and slowly wearing England’s bowlers down.Gill was given a life early on the fifth day when Ollie Pope failed to hold onto a stinging chance at short cover, and was hit on the glove and helmet as Ben Stokes broke through the pain barrier to bowl an eight-over spell from the James Anderson End. Stokes did not bowl on the fourth day due to cramp and grimaced after every ball due to a shoulder niggle. But he was the man that gave England their first breakthrough, pinning KL Rahul on the back pad to trap him lbw and break a partnership worth 188 with Gill. Stokes exploited the variable bounce on offer throughout his spell, with some balls shooting through low and others – like the brute that struck Gill – leaping unexpectedly.Chris Woakes took the new ball alongside Archer and occasionally beat the bat, with Gill surviving an incredibly tight leave soon after a celebratory yelp on reaching three figures. But he played away from his body to a back-of-a-length ball from Archer shortly before lunch, and edged through to Jamie Smith to make England clear favourites.

Boult expected to return for remainder of IPL 2025

Boult has been Mumbai Indians’ leading wicket-taker so far

Nagraj Gollapudi14-May-2025

Trent Boult has 18 wickets in IPL 2025•Associated Press

Trent Boult is likely to return for the remainder of IPL 2025. It is a shot in the arm for Mumbai Indians (MI), considering Boult has been a key part of their success in a season where they have bounced back from a weak start to emerge as a strong contender for the playoffs.Boult, 36, was MI’s most expensive signing at the last mega auction at INR 12.5 crore (USD 1.49 million approx.). The left-arm quick has shown why he ranks among the best: currently he is MI’s leading wicket-taker this season and joint-fourth-highest overall with 18 wickets at an economy rate of 8.49. He also won the Player-of-the-Match award for his 4 for 26 in the away match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).MI are one of the franchises that could be severely impacted by the rescheduling of the IPL after it was suspended for a week on May 10. The five-time champions are still waiting on the availability of three of their first-choice overseas players: the South African pair of Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch and England batting allrounder Will Jacks. On Tuesday, Cricket South Africa said that the NOCs given to South African players participating in IPL would only run until May 25, the original end date of the tournament, and discussions were on with the BCCI to figure out the way forward. Both Rickelton and Bosch are part of South Africa’s squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and CSA has said the selected players would need to assemble by the end of May to prepare for the marquee Test event. As for Jacks, ESPNcricinfo has learned that the ECB has told England players bound for the IPL to return in time for the home ODI series against West Indies starting on May 29.

Hussey: CSK 'want to improve at talent identification'

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have helped rejuvenate the careers of India internationals like Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube in the recent past, but with their IPL 2025 playoffs hopes all but gone, they are hoping to ease the transition into next season by bringing in youngsters like 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis, who turned 22 on the eve of CSK’s game against Punjab Kings (PBKS), and see how they go at the highest level.Batting coach Michael Hussey spoke about the young talents they have at their disposal on Tuesday adding that CSK really need to get better at scouting them and nurturing them. “I think it’s one area that we’ve really identified that we want to improve on is that talent identification side of things,” he said at the press conference.”So, we have had different players come in and train with us at various stages, almost on trial a little bit, but also when their names come up for an auction, then at least we’ve seen them, we’ve had eyes on them. I mean, we get sent all the videos, packages and stuff. But to be able to actually watch them in the flesh, it does give you a bit more to go on.”Wednesday’s IPL game will feature four uncapped Indian batters opening for the first time in the league’s history. Having used Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway and Rahul Tripathi as openers without much success, CSK have turned to Mhatre, who had impressed their team management during a mid-season trial at Chepauk, and Andhra’s Shaik Rasheed, who had not played in the IPL before this season.CSK have blooded the pair and Brevis into their team after putting them in match-simulation training at their high-performance academy on the outskirts of Chennai. Some overseas players, including those from New Zealand and West Indies, have also recently trained at the academy to prepare for subcontinent tours.Michael Hussey: We’ve had [Shaik Rasheed] with us now for, well, at least a couple of seasons and he’s a beautiful player•BCCI

“If we can play some practice games, see them [youngsters] under pressure, we can make more informed decisions about the talent that we’re looking at moving forward,” Hussey said. “So, it’s certainly one area that I think they’re putting a lot of time and effort into to make sure that we get the right talent moving forward.”They’re very important decisions. There’s so much talent in this country and [it’s about] picking the right ones. We’re still going to make mistakes, no question. But if we can make more informed decisions, then I think that will help the franchise moving forward.”Hussey believed that the work put in by the players and the staff at the academy could benefit CSK, if not right now, then at least in the future.”Yeah, even in situations like this [playoff hopes fading], as a coaching group, we’re looking for ways that we can do things better as well,” he said. “And it’s a magnificent facility, that high-performance centre. It’s a fantastic resource for us, so we should use it. And to be able to put players into situations in practice games that is closer to the match. I mean, we can bat in the nets, and that’s fine but to expose them in a match situation at practice is closer to what they’re going to experience in a match.”Hussey also said that the CSK team management will remain in close contact with the rookie players and will monitor their progress in their country’s leagues and domestic games so that they level up by IPL 2026. Mhatre has made starts in both of his innings so far but couldn’t press on. Rasheed did well on debut (27 off 19) but his most recent knock was a first-ball duck. Brevis was 17 off 17 against Sunrisers Hyderabad before he opened up and made 42 off 25.”Shaik Rasheed’s a good example [of a young player coming through the ranks],” Hussey said. “We’ve had him with us now for, well, at least a couple of seasons and he’s a beautiful player. But you’re right, we need to find out how he can go under pressure. So, yes, he’s got his opportunity now, and, you know, he’s handling it well at the moment. Like, obviously, he’ll want to get some more runs towards the back end of the season. But he’s certainly got the skill and the talent to be able to do it.”We’ll keep a close eye on them when they’re playing their domestic stuff as well and keep working with them. It’s not just working with them for this two-and-a-half months, it’s still communicating and working with them throughout the rest of the year as well, and seeing how they’re going, particularly in those pressure situations, seeing what their mentality is like.”
