Craig Overton leaves Durham overwhelmed on 22-wicket day

Drissell takes career-best five-for but Lammonby 89 gives Somerset the clear edge

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay22-Jul-2025Durham 145 (Raine 42, Overton 6-23) and 5 for 2 trail Somerset 250 (Lammonby 89, Drissell 5-59) by 100 runsSomerset’s Craig Overton claimed six for 23 as 22 wickets fell on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division One game against Durham at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.Invited to bat first on a green pitch, the visitors subsided to 145 all out, with Overton twice on a hat-trick during ten probing overs from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End. Ben Raine top-scored with 42.In reply, Somerset posted 250 all out, Tom Lammonby putting the pitch in perspective with an impressive 89 off 109 balls, including 8 fours. Off-spinner George Drissell returned career-best figures of five for 59.Durham then lost skipper Alex Lees and nightwatchman Callum Parkinson in the three remaining overs to close on five for two and trailed by 100 runs. There was little sign of the carnage to come when Lees and Emilio Gay launched Durham’s day with a stand of 26 in 5.5 overs before Gay edged a low catch to second slip to become Overton’s first victim. The next ball saw Colin Ackerman taken at first slip by Tom Kohler-Cadmore and before they knew it the visitors were 33 for three, David Bedingham nicking a delivery from Gregory to wicketkeeper James Rew.Overton dropped Ollie Robinson at second slip in the same Gregory over and Durham were relieved when rain arrived at 12.10pm forcing an early lunch half an hour later. The restart saw Overton strike with his fourth and fifth balls, Robinson caught behind off a defensive push and Graham Clark taken at third slip by Tom Abell, both without scoring.Lees had struck five fours in moving to 27 when miscuing a big hit off Overton and providing the bowler with a steepling catch to make it 43 for six. Drissell drove in the air to mid-off to give Overton his sixth wicket with the total on 71, while Raine hit a defiant straight six off Josh Davey before edging a defensive shot off the same bowler through to Rew.Neil Wagner struck 4 fours in a Davey over before a cross-batted shot saw him caught at mid-on off Jake Ball and Matthew Potts had cleared the mid-wicket boundary off Leach when reverse-sweeping the left-arm spinner straight to Abell at short third-man to end a Durham innings spanning just 30.1 overs.Somerset openers Davey and Kohler-Cadmore quickly went on the attack, Davey striking three successive fours off Potts and his partner lofting two sixes over the short boundary on the town side of the ground in the same Raine over.Kohler-Cadmore dispatched three consecutive Wagner deliveries for four as the pair brought up a half-century stand in just 7.1 overs. But the experienced South African took revenge with the total on 62, accepting a skyed return catch as Kohler-Cadmore top-edged a pull shot.Tea was taken with Davey unbeaten on 22. He had added 15 in the final session when edging a back-foot defensive shot off Potts to Bedingham at first slip. The same over saw Rew depart for a duck, cutting a catch to gully, and when Abell also fell without scoring, caught at short-leg in Drissell’s first over, Somerset had slumped to 103 for four.Tom Banton could make only ten before Drissell induced another short-leg catch with a ball that turned. But Lammonby and Archie Vaughan steadied the ship and a swept boundary by Vaughan off Parkinson put his side in front.Lammonby moved to a fluent 52-ball half-century with a reverse sweep for four off Drissell. But Vaughan fell lbw to Parkinson for 15, the first wicket of the day not to fall to a catch, with Somerset just 11 runs ahead.Lewis Gregory hit 17 before fending a catch to short-leg off Wagner and Lammonby’s excellent contribution ended when he edged to second slip off Drissell, who quickly followed up by bowling Overton for 19.A Ball six off Drissell took Somerset to a batting bonus point, but the former Gloucestershire spinner immediately responded by bowling him to complete a maiden five-for.Having seen the ball turn, the hosts gave the new ball to off-spinner Vaughan, who struck with the second delivery, Lees edging to second slip. Leach then pinned Parkinson lbw to cap an extraordinary day.

McSweeney anchors Australia A as he bids for second chance

Nathan McSweeney gave the national selectors a reminder of his worth with a determined 94 not out to lead Australia A to a strong position in their four-day game against Sri Lanka A in Darwin.McSweeney and Liam Scott took Australia A to 241 for 4 at stumps on day two after the visitors made 272 when asked to bat first at Marrara Oval. The pair had added 114 for the fifth wicket, putting their side in a prime position to push for victory in the first of two four-day games between the two sides in Darwin.McSweeney was called up to the Test side for last summer’s home series against India, but was dropped after averaging 14.4 through the first three matches. He then went on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka but wasn’t used, and was not chosen in the country’s squads for last month’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s and the current tour of the West Indies. But after making 85 not out, 5 and 9 in Australia A’s 2-1 victory over Sri Lanka A in the Darwin one-day series that finished last week, McSweeney was back in strong form on Monday in drawing within six runs of a century by stumps. The South Australia captain had turned in a composed knock against the Sri Lanka A attack, with six fours coming in his 219-ball stay at the crease. His SA team-mate Scott was in fine touch as well, the pace-bowling allrounder reaching 52 off 117 balls with four boundaries. The pair steadied the ship after Australia A lost their third and fourth wickets with the score on 127, with Kurtis Patterson lbw and captain Jason Sangha caught out for a three-ball duck. Both wickets were taken by 24-year-old left-arm spinner Sonal Dinusha, who followed his strong work with the bat in making an unbeaten 105 on Sunday.Earlier, Tasmania’s Jake Weatherald struck a fine 98-ball 54 with six fours and a six, while fellow opener Campbell Kellaway of Victoria made 13.

Aaron Boone Claps Back During Press Conference Over Question He Took Exception To

The New York Yankees felt like they were on top of the world. They (Aaron Judge, then Giancarlo Stanton) hit back-to-back home runs off elite closer Emmanuel Clase to tie and then go ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the ALCS. But then Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel hit a home run in the ninth inning to tie it and send it to extra innings. Then David Fry hit a walk-off home run to end it.

For a moment, it felt like the Yankees going up 3-0 was a sure thing. Now, it's 2-1, and the Guardians are very much in this series.

After the game, Boone was asked if he ever felt like the Yankees had the game, "in the bag." He was clearly ticked at the question, responding and almost mocking the reporter's ask, saying, "That's, come on, no. Stop it with that."

The reporter clarified that the celebration from the Yankees dugout gave the impression that the team felt like they had won it. "It's the playoffs, man, you hit [game-]tying home runs and go-ahead homers… That's what it looks like."

"You never have anything in the bag in the playoffs, no. It's, you never take anything for granted. So no, I mean, but you're gonna celebrate big moments all the time like that."

After going ahead late and seeing his closing pitchers succumb to the Guardians offense, that feeling of never having it in the bag was all too real for Boone to even entertain the idea after Game 3.

Game 4 is Friday night.

Everton readying January move for "brilliant" forward with 45 G/A last year

Already shifting their focus towards the January transfer window, Everton are reportedly ready to offer one want-away forward a fresh exit route.

Duncan Ferguson takes aim at "poor" Beto

It should come as no surprise that Everton are already eyeing additional support in attack. That’s where their biggest weakness lies. Despite adding the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Thierno Barry and Jack Grealish to David Moyes’ side in the summer, the Toffees are still struggling to find goals – scoring just twice in their recent four-game winless run.

A large part of that problem has been Beto and his underwhelming performances. With Barry still not ready to step into the side as a starter every week, the responsibility has fallen the way of Beto to lead the lines for Moyes, who has even been critical of the forward himself in the early stages of the campaign.

In Monday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham, the 27-year-old failed to impress once more and quickly became the subject of Duncan Ferguson’s frustration in his post-match analysis.

If Everton are looking to push beyond the bottom half and back to where many feel they belong, then signing a replacement for Beto in January should be top of their priority list.

There’s also no guarantee that Barry will prove his worth as of yet. The summer arrival has started just once in the Premier League and made five other appearances from the bench, but is yet to find the back of the net.

The Toffees must welcome a player at the peak of their powers and may well have the perfect player in mind to do exactly that when the winter window swings open.

Everton readying Maeda move

As reported by Sports Boom, Everton are now ready to offer Daizen Maeda an exit route from Celtic amid his desire to leave the Scottish giants in 2026.

The Japan international revealed earlier this season that he had an agreement with another club before the Bhoys blocked his move late on in the summer window. Now, Everton could take full advantage to swoop in this winter.

Maeda revealed: “There were some things that I had agreed to personally, so I wanted to take on the challenge. I had received an offer, and I had been telling the club that I wanted to take the next step, but Celtic hadn’t been able to make any good reinforcements, so in the end they told me they couldn’t let me leave.”

Not just O'Brien: Moyes is wasting Everton star in his current position

David Moyes’ Everton side still need to go up a few gears over the coming weeks.

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 1, 2025

Whilst the forward, who can also play as a winger, is yet to replicate last season’s incredible form which ended in 33 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, he is more than capable of reaching that level again.

Dubbed “brilliant” by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, Everton should do everything to sign Maeda when the January transfer window arrives.

Whimsical Artifact From Mets' Incredible 2024 Season Headed to Baseball Hall of Fame

The New York Mets' history is littered with teams that accomplished the impossible, but none of them seemed to have as much fun doing it as the 2024 edition of the team.

Shaking off an ugly 24-35 start, the Mets dispatched the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs to come within two games of the National League pennant. Though they ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, their legacy of success and silliness is secure.

On Tuesday, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced it had added a token of New York's magical run to its collection: the team's trademark "OMG" sign.

The sign—held aloft after every Mets home run—was inaugurated as a tribute to infielder Jose Iglesias, who released a Latin pop single titled "OMG" on June 28. Iglesias, who had not played in MLB since 2022 before this season, hit .337 in '24.

Whether Grimace will join the sign in Cooperstown, N.Y. is unknown at press time.

Arsenal player ratings vs Slavia Prague: Who needs Viktor Gyokeres? Stand-in striker Mikel Merino provides finishing masterclass as Gunners stay perfect in Champions League

Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague on Tuesday made it four wins from four in the Champions League for the high-flying Gunners so far in 2025-26. Bukayo Saka, captain for the night, got the ball rolling from the penalty spot, before Mikel Merino took over as the Spain international, playing in place of Viktor Gyokeres, scored twice in a clinical performance in the Czech capital.

Gabriel Magalhaes has made his name in recent seasons as a force with his head at attacking set-pieces, but the centre-back almost gave Arsenal a very early lead in spectacular fashion – his left-footed drive after the ball was only partially cleared by Slavia just narrowly missed the target.

Slavia pressure in response didn't test David Raya as shots were either blocked or flew off target, before the Gunners regained a creative foothold and Saka had a pair of efforts saved by goalkeeper Jakub Markovic midway through the first half. Leandro Trossard was also denied in a spell of pressure that would have pleased Arteta on the touchline.

Arsenal were also peppering the Slavia box with corners, which directly led to making the breakthrough. A delivery from Saka was met at the near post by Gabriel and deflected behind, which prompted a VAR intervention after striking Lukas Provod’s arm before it went out of play. The referee pointed to the spot after consulting the pitchside monitor and Saka showed no mercy as he smashed the subsequent spot-kick into the net.

Slavia, disappointing since the very early stages, unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty of their own a couple of times, but Arsenal were firmly in control by the time the half-time whistle came. The second goal came, meanwhile, straight after the restart and was as simple as you like as Trossard supplied the cross from the left and Merino, somehow completely unmarked in the middle, turned the ball in six yards out.

Merino's second of the night, and Arsenal's third, was another simple one. Declan Rice's floated ball into the box looked like it should have been Markovic's to claim, only for the goalkeeper not to make it before Merino got his head there instead, flicking into the empty net.

The Gunners survived a late penalty decision when substitute Ben White seemed to upend Provod, but appeared harsh on second look and VAR intervened to determine it was not a foul.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the Fortuna Arena…

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

David Raya (6/10):

Slavia didn't manage a shot on target until deep into stoppage time, so his goal was pretty much unchallenged. Commanded his area well.

Jurrien Timber (6/10):

Saw surprisingly little of the ball in possession, with only 35 touches until being withdrawn after 73 minutes.

William Saliba (6/10):

One his easier nights after Slavia's early impetus seemed to fade after the opening 15 minutes.

Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Typically made himself an attacking threat as much as he was a defensive force and was directly involved in winning the penalty that broke the deadlock.

Piero Hincapie (6/10):

Made his full Champions League debut for the Gunners. Departed the pitch shortly after being left in a heap, but it appeared to be a planned substitution anyway.

AdvertisementAFPMidfield

Ethan Nwaneri (6/10):

Made tidy use of the ball in midfield but struggled to impose himself physically.

Christian Norgaard (5/10):

Gave the ball away more easily than Arteta would have liked. Only won three of nine duels on the ground and in the air.

Declan Rice (8/10):

Completed more passes than anyone else and the pitch, and by extension created the most chances. Comes away with an assist for the ball into the box that gave Merino the second of his brace.

Getty Images SportAttack

Bukayo Saka (8/10):

Continues rising to the occasion and is now the first-ever Arsenal player to score in four successive Champions League away games.

Mikel Merino (9/10):

Back in the No.9 role after Gyokeres was ruled out due to the injury and repaid that faith from his manager. Probably couldn't believe how much space he was given when doubling Arsenal's lead, but crucially made sure to make the opportunity count. His second showed just as much striker's instinct. The ball didn't really stick when it was fired into him, but with two goals what does it matter?

Leandro Trossard (7/10):

Assist for Merino's goal aside, the Belgian was consistently involved in promising Arsenal attacks, including a previous attempted cross towards the stand-in striker that was only just cut out before it reached its mark.

Eberechi Eze (5/10):

Hardly involved off the bench.

Max Dowman (6/10):

This monumental season keeps getting better for the 15-year-old, who is now the youngest player in Champions League history.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10):

On at left-back as Arteta looked to freshen things up for the final stages.

Ben White (5/10):

Both full-backs were replaced simultaneously, with White going to the right. VAR saved him from conceding a penalty.

Andre Harriman-Annous (6/10):

Another Champions League debut, but at 17 a relative veteran compared to Dowman.

Mikel Arteta (9/10):

Gyokeres made it seven injured players, plus Zubimendi's suspension, so the boss really had to rely on his squad's depth for this one. Made other changes too, opting to rest Calafiori and Eze from the start. Everything worked as hoped and he could then rotate again at 3-0 up.

Ex-West Ham chief shares "clear" boardroom issues he saw from his time at the club

A former West Ham employee has shared some “clear” boardroom issues he saw during his time at the club, amid the ongoing protests surrounding Karren Brady and David Sullivan’s leadership.

West Ham fans have been increasingly vocal in their opposition to the club’s ownership under Brady and Sullivan, with discontent reaching new heights.

Supporter groups are so frustrated that they’re planning protests at every Saturday home game this season, aiming to make their voices heard loud and clear.

The root of the protest lies in fans’ growing frustration over what they see as mismanagement and broken promises by Brady and Sullivan. Many supporters feel the duo have prioritised profit over the club’s long-term success, failing to reinvest adequately in the squad and infrastructure.

Despite some initial optimism when they took over, the lack of consistent on-field progress, underwhelming recruitment strategy and no clear plan moving forward has undoubtedly escalated tensions to boiling point.

Just two years after West Ham won their first major trophy in decades, with David Moyes’ Hammers lifting the Conference League in 2023, the east Londoners find themselves battling relegation after conceding more goals than any other Premier League side.

Since Moyes’ departure, a host of managers in Julen Lopetegui, Graham Potter and now Nuno Espirito Santo have failed to transform their fortunes, with things looking very bleak at the London Stadium.

While reports suggest that West Ham are ready to spend in January as they look to save their season, the club’s precarious position can be majorly put down to some questionable decisions by Sullivan, Brady and co.

Former West Ham scout reveals "clear" boardroom issues he saw during his time at the club

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-West Ham senior scout Mick Brown, didn’t hold back in his criticism of the boardroom — saying their problems go all the way back to when he was employed by the Irons.

Given this is coming from someone who once worked for West Ham, it is evident that fans’ frustrations are entirely justified.

Now, Nuno is the latest under-fire boss to be tasked with getting the best out of this uninspired West Ham side, who’ve looked as poor of an outfit as we’ve seen this season.

January represents a major lifeline for the club as they reportedly target a new defender, midfielder and forward, but questions will be asked as to why they didn’t address these three positions properly in the summer.

Come the winter, it could even be a case of too little, too late.

Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani Had One-Word Response to Question About Playoff Jitters

Shohei Ohtani is one day away from beginning his postseason career.

Ohtani never cracked the playoff bracket once over his six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. But he led the crosstown Dodgers to the postseason in 2024 by becoming the first player in MLB history to mash 50 homers and steal 50 bases in a single season.

Is Ohtani nervous for the playoffs to begin?

"No," he said in English on Friday.

“It’s always been my childhood dream to be in important situations and play in important games," Ohtani said through a translator. "So I think the excitement of that is greater than anything else I could possibly feel.”

In his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani batted .310/.390/.646 with a league-leading 54 home runs and 130 RBIs in 159 games. He became just the 19th player in MLB history (and the first in the last 23 years) to notch over 400 total bases, registering 411.

Ohtani and the Dodgers will square off against right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease and the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday. Ohtani has batted 4-for-15 (.267) over his career against Cease with two homers, two walks and four RBIs.
